Electronic Arts told the LA Times during an interview this week that the Godfather franchise is done at the publisher. EA Games label president Frank Gibeau told the paper, "We're not going to do another one." He then noted that there was no Godfather game in the schedule going out three years.
EA's PR followed up with the Times to say no decision had been made about the fate of the mafia franchise and that "Paramount is a great partner." The speculation is that EA is toning down its focus on licensed properties and working on making a stable of original franchises to exploit.

EA knows good business sense not to dump any more money into this pit called Godfather.
This IP doesn't have the shine it used to, and EA miscalculated the worth of it. They sunk a shit load of money into the license and development, not to mention the marketing. The game didn't sell like gangbusters and they probably lost their shirts on this title. Oh well. Live and learn.
I guess we won't be seeing a Three's Company game anytime soon. ;-P

Actually xcrunk there is massive potential in a Godfather game done right. EA just chose to butccher the franchise and churn out pap - two sub standard GTA clones. If they didn't meet sales expectations (if this is indeed why they're stopping), they can point the finger of blame squarely at themselves.

Any bets on them coming back in 10 years or so for a watered down shell of its former self in Godfather 3?

I've always felt that it's easiest to hate the company on top. Yes, I do feel much more contempt now for Activision than I do for EA(mostly because of what they did to Guitar Hero). But I get the feeling that if EA had the same opportunities as Activision they'd do the same things.
For example, so many people avoid shopping at Wal-Mart or getting gas from Exxon. Is it because they're really more evil than other companies or they're just more successful? Would K-Mart and Sunoco be just as hated if they were on top in their industries?

@Judd
I see you're point, but (and i love saying this) you're wrong.
EA is finally putting out quality titles, Mirror's Edge and Dead
Space to name two. Activision is spewing out Guitar Hero's and casual crap all over the place.
EA games are beginning to have great quality, while Activision games are becoming rushed, redone versions of things that came out only a year ago, or Prototype which is just unfinished (yes, i have it, AI = laughably bad).

While I do like that EA is making up new IP's, I don't believe that they are doing it for the benefit of gamers. They're doing it because they believe they can make more money than if they pay for rights such as (as this article stated) the Godfather games.
If they get the gaming populace to believe that they are being more independent, than they can get the more hardcore gamers on board along with the annual sports fan who will buy every iteration of Madden.
You're falling into their marketing ploy. Now don't get me a wrong, I'd rather a developer entice me by bringing out original products over re-releasing the same thing. But it's all part of their strategy.
By getting the public to think that they care less about the money, they are getting more money.

Electronic Arts has a long way to go before they're in my good graces. You don't wash away a decade plus of bad games, subversive copy protection, the lobotomy of Will Wright, and a corporate ethos of trying to scam every penny out of it's customers with a few mediocre titles and a promise to stop raping my computer with DRM.
Case in point, Spore was a miserable abortion of a game and Will Wright should be ashamed of himself. The Sims 3 is a borderline demo, and I'm not happy that I'm expected to shell out more money for items and features that should've been in the release, so as to at least make it worth my time and money over the prior installment of the series.

Wonderful, now my dreams of running over Sofia Coppola for her performance have been dashed.

I can't say I blame them for wanting to spend development funds on IP's they actually own the rights to forever. Besides, the Godfather games are more trouble than they are worth and don't have enough clout with the young generation of gamers to make much difference.

EDIT: They say "We're not doing another one." Does that mean that they are merely selling the license? Hmmm...

Agreed with the_punisher.
Prototype is meh. Some cool ideas, but the execution wasn't there for me.
Its not a total waste, I just couldn't recommend it to many people for $60. Especially because pretty early on in the Dev cycle they axed co-op. Which could make it very fun.

Glad to see that EA know how to let go of a franchise, I'm so fed up of them churning out game after to, trying to turn a buck on yet another sequel. I really think that they made the right choice here, I've played both Godfather games and frankly, there both a load of rubbish.

Well that sucks I really enjoy the Godfather games. Especially number two. They are great fun, but I suppose there isn't much more that can be done with the series and I'm excited to see what EA can come up with in terms of original IPs, I've always been a fan of EA anyway.
