Impressions: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and old flings
Elena Fisher, shrewdly describing herself as "last year's model," is back in Uncharted 2, breaking with the standard serial adventure ethos that values the one-and-done romantic interest over long-term attachment. It may have taken Marion two decades to make her way back to Indy's side, but Elena has swiftly staked a claim as Nathan Drake's true sidekick. The two reunite in Naughty Dog's sequel with the sassy Chloe spicing up the between-the-sheets melodrama. It's a diversion, at least, from the requisite mass murdering that seems to accompany Drake's carefree treasure hunts.
Naughty Dog most certainly has not scaled back any of the elements that made the first Uncharted a blast to play but, upon reflection, posed some serious questions about Drake's psychological condition. The man single-handedly committed pirate genocide, after all (well, Elena did peg a few, too). Fitting, then, that Uncharted 2's antagonist is a Serbian war criminal, who might share more in common with Drake than the surface story leads us to believe.

Director Bruce Straley talked a lot about storytelling as he guided Drake through several never-before-seen sections of the single-player game. He began on a centralized hotel rooftop in a sprawling Nepalese city, nestled in a valley in the foothills of the Himalayas. Straley pointed out at the distant landscape, dotted with dozens of shimmering shrines. Out there, he explained, was our destination; one of the temples hid the key to the secret entrance to the mythical kingdom of Shambhala.
Straley was highlighting how visual cues will be used to enhance the game's reality -- the existence of an Uncharted universe. There's a sense of a cohesive, visible world that is completely playable. Additionally, the open-world view serves as a storytelling technique. It's foreshadowing. On top of the hotel, Drake looked toward the edges of town, noting the temples, one of which he would eventually visit, and then, beyond those, snow-capped mountains, which (from trailers) we know will be another distant, gameplay destination.
Collecting himself back into the present location, Drake shimmied and tiptoed across rooftops, Chloe tagging long. The easygoing platforming was not to last, though, as a heavily armed helicopter descended upon the adventures, unleashing all manner of firepower on the brittle architecture supporting the duo. The ensuing chase -- and massive environmental destruction -- showed off the game's new, dynamic objects technology. Trees sprouting from a rooftop garden bent and swayed in rhythm with the wind generated by the copter's blades. Later, as a building collapsed, all manner of objects (boxes, desks, chairs, mercenaries, and even Drake and Chloe) slid toward a gaping opening where a wall once shielded the outside -- before the bad guys rocketed it to pieces. With disregard for the in-process catastrophe, the firefight continued between our heroes and their foes, with moving cover, as Drake and his sidekick stumbled closer to the perilous drop. They leapt, at just the right moment, smashing through a window of the next-door building.

The next section we were shown reunited Drake and Elena, albeit in the most unfavorable of circumstances. Drake and Chloe emerged from the temple, back into the streets, where they saw Elena and a colleague pinned down by gunfire. It was raining now, lightening-and-thundering, the color palette had been stripped and desaturated. More visual storytelling. Drama indeed.
Eventually, the allies-by-default, Elena, Chloe, Drake, and an injured cameraman glued to Drake's shoulder, were forced to run (and shuffle) for their lives. Drake is slowed down as Chloe pushes ahead (she's the selfish one), and Elena is trying her best to stave off the oncoming militia. There's more, subtle storytelling in this escape mission; in the back-and-forth bantering; in the canned moments; and in each character's reaction to these events: a life-or-death tussle in an alleyway; a mortar shell just missing into a nearby wall.
Couple the improved physicality of the virtual actors (um, the animations) with the artful environmental effects, and Naughty Dog is building in-game antagonism. Uncharted 2 is peeling away the surface layers applied in the first adventure and actively pushing us to enter into Drake's unstable condition. Just ask the guy we saw him toss from a rooftop. Or the dude who burst into flames when Drake chucked a propane tank at him, igniting the makeshift bomb with a single bullet. There's enhanced gameplay depth for sure, but also a more dramatic, brutal experience. Bring it on!

I want this game more and more with everything I read
Night Elve @ Jun 5th 2009 5:12PM
I'm in the same boat, Uncharted is one of my favorites games of all times and now that I know Elena is back I'm more than happy.

Phew... I suspected the worst before clicking that link, pete. Like a Goblin, or Rosanne Barr.
lobotomies4free @ Jun 5th 2009 8:34PM
It all looked typical to me. The Last Guardian is more my style though...
ActuallyRobin @ Jun 5th 2009 5:04PM
I have never been this excited about a game. Uncharted 2 cannot come out soon enough.
dabamf @ Jun 5th 2009 6:41PM
Here here! The first game was baller.
butaneko @ Jun 5th 2009 4:56PM
The demo with the helicopter felt a bit too scripted to me. I hope the whole game isn't like that!
glitched @ Jun 5th 2009 5:16PM
lolwut?
It's all scripted. Drake doesn't live in a sandbox world.
tobz1000 @ Jun 7th 2009 1:48PM
This isn't the game for you.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 5th 2009 4:56PM
Based on everything we've seen, read, and heard about the game it's hard for me not to think this is the early frontrunner for goty. We'll see if it can maintain the awesomeness seen in these demo's and trailers for the whole game, but I certainly can't wait to get my hands on the game.
SaMav @ Jun 5th 2009 4:57PM
Is it me, or does the guy talking in the beginning sound like Christopher Walken when he says "fearsome" and "fragment"?
Also I hope there aren't too many multiplayer trophies in this game.
I would love to have a platinum trophy in this one to go with the one i got in the first one.
Wiizer @ Jun 5th 2009 4:57PM
The facial expressions is what amazes me. It's really hard for me to look away at the backgrounds because you can see the emotions so vividly on each characters' face.
arrness @ Jun 5th 2009 4:57PM
games i want this year:
Bioshock 2
Modern Warfare 2
This.
ChuckJ @ Jun 5th 2009 4:58PM
Looks like it would be a "B" movie and that chick in the red has an annoying accent.
Game looks good, but I cant say I am dying for it, like some others have said. Im sure itll be fun but honestly I am more looking forward to Halo 3: ODST. I guess it just depends on what type of games you're into. This just doesnt look so spectacular that I would ever want it as badly as some of you others.
Wiizer @ Jun 5th 2009 5:00PM
Thanks for stoppin' by, Chuck!
Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 5th 2009 5:05PM
"I am more looking forward to Halo 3: ODST"
Ouch, why do that to yourself? Do you enjoy pain the same way David Carradine apparently did? (Too soon?)
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 5th 2009 5:19PM
Halo wa?
ChuckJ @ Jun 5th 2009 5:31PM
Wow, typical fanboys. I didnt even say anything "negative" about the game and I get down voted. It's like "say something great about the game or you suck!!!!". LOL You kids are funny.
And to the guy who made the joke about David C., no I dont enjoy pain. What does liking or looking forward to one game over another have anything to do with pain? David acting like a freak and inturn, causing his own sad death and me saying what I said can not be compared. What is wrong with you?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 5th 2009 5:39PM
You said you're looking forward to a halo game more than this, in which case I asked do you enjoy suffering? Dont' worry, I would ask you the same question if you said you were looking forward to a halo game more than any game, not just this.
Couldn't you have just said Modern Warfare 2 instead? That's at least going to be a good shooter.
ChuckJ @ Jun 5th 2009 5:45PM
tmacair....
I said ODST because its not a typical Halo game. The playing style will be different and it seems darker in a sense. Im just really interested in seeing what Bungie can do if they step away from the usual style of Halo.
I am not knocking this game at all. It looks very good but Im not drooling over it thats all. I like stories in games but I think that's the part that turns me off in a sense on this one. The preview runs like a "b" movie preview. Yes the game looks very good and I will probably play it. I thought the original was good but I didnt get any long term play value out of it. Ill probably rent this and buy it if the multiplayer is worthy of any sustained time.
kentuckyfried @ Jun 5th 2009 5:55PM
You automatically lost all your credibility when you mentioned Halo...lol.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 5th 2009 7:11PM
ODST wont be a FPS!?!?!
Jack Spicer @ Jun 5th 2009 7:54PM
Hey, come on guys. That new Halo ODST looks pretty cool. It really strays away from the whole Master Chief thing. Best part was seeing the "Rookie" trying to bake a cake with Cheap Cheap Chicken, upon completing the level he went to a Grunts B-day party (his name is Phil) and gave him quite the surprise. Cannot wait to see what else is in store fro this new breed of Halo.
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 5th 2009 8:34PM
A darker Halo? Is that possible? Darker as in Gear of war darker or darker as in lighting darker?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 5th 2009 8:53PM
The chick in red is voiced by Claudia Black and she has a great accent in everything else she does. I can't see how this would be different.
Kdiggy @ Jun 6th 2009 1:17PM
"I said ODST because its not a typical Halo game..." What a tool. You're right... it's a 3 hour expansion. Have fun paying $65 for a map pack and a 3 hour game!
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 5th 2009 5:01PM
Damn I cant wait for this....
also I hope Sony makes a GOOD movie off of this....
it would SOOOOOOO Make a Good movie...
glitched @ Jun 5th 2009 5:21PM
Only if they use the actual characters.
I thought the voice actors also do the mocap as well?
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 5th 2009 5:31PM
he doesnt really LOOK like Nathan Drake tho....
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0636046/
kentuckyfried @ Jun 5th 2009 5:56PM
In typical Sony fashion, they'll take the money and do some other retarded movie...
This would be an almost perfect career vehicle for Nathan Fillion...
Robert Maynard @ Jun 5th 2009 7:37PM
I thought the whole point of games this good was that we didn't need movies anymore - Drake's Fortune was like playing a crazy entertaining adventure movie, only hours and hours longer. :P
MuToiD_MaN @ Jun 5th 2009 7:48PM
Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake??? Sign me up!
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 5th 2009 9:00PM
The voice actors in the first one did the mocap too. I doubt this one is different, and frankly given how well Uncharted's mocap worked out, I expect this will become the standard for video game mocap.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEZzV5Wl97c#t=2m00s
I personally think the Nate actor looks like Nate at least in body shape.
KingOfGods @ Jun 5th 2009 5:02PM
The multiplayer could be fun if it wasn't a race to spawn kill
Daniel @ Jun 5th 2009 5:20PM
You must have bad luck. Been playing the beta for a few days and haven't been spawn-killed even once.
Obie @ Jun 5th 2009 5:02PM
Whoa, when I get around to getting a PS3 this game seems like a must-have.
Jack Spicer PSN: watsuke @ Jun 5th 2009 8:14PM
When MS feels they're console is worth more then $200 i might pick one up, but since they feel its cheap im definitely not getting one. Its one thing for me to think its made with cheap hardware, its another for them to agree.
Eric @ Jun 5th 2009 5:02PM
I will HAVE to by a ps3. I must play this game. WOW.
SSJPabs @ Jun 5th 2009 5:08PM
Is Chloe Claudia Black?
Heavytoka @ Jun 5th 2009 5:12PM
Yeah
Robin @ Jun 5th 2009 5:13PM
Yes
SaMav @ Jun 5th 2009 6:20PM
No way is she black.
No RE5 here.
mavbsbll21 @ Jun 5th 2009 6:23PM
Wait, nvm. You were missing a comma. I see now that your not asking if Chloe Claudia is black. But if Chloe, is black. I'll go away now...
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 5th 2009 5:09PM
If Natan “smart” dialogue is no longer cheap sarcasm I'll buy it first day.
I would buy it first day anyway if it was on 60$ but thanks to local and import taxes the price of a regular new release exceeds the $100 price so I have to be extra picky and be sure that whatever I buy is a possible GOTY candidate and judging from all the trailers, game play videos etc perhaps I should pre-order it now.
eNrique @ Jun 5th 2009 5:15PM
If mr esc's “smart” comments are no longer cheap sarcasm I'll upvote thm right away.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 5th 2009 5:21PM
I'm still trying to figure out if I know you,I did something to you or I slept with your mother. What's with the hate lately I can't post anything without some tosser replying crap to me without any good reason.
Did I kill a kitten on my way in here or what?
Hyams @ Jun 5th 2009 5:58PM
You killed a kitten? You monster.
eNrique @ Jun 5th 2009 6:23PM
Well, certainly it isn't because you slept with my mom, let's face it, you haven't slept with anyone.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 5th 2009 9:49PM
Ni I had sex with her but if not me then who is your daddy?
