I thought LittleBigPlanet beat Mario to the punch on that one.

I can't believe someone actually compared the platforming in LBP to the platforming in SMB.

yeah, they're really different. the only real similarity is the 4-player co-op platforming. that's it.

That's got absolutely zilch to do with his point. The controls in both games are distinctly different, yes, but LBP does indeed have 4-player competitive co-op platforming gameplay. I thought his point was rather obvious myself.

Just to expound on that, in LBP the players can work together to pass goals and must co-op to pass some areas. But at the same time you are competing for points and many levels even have racing sections. Then at the end of the race sections and the end of the levels the players are given 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place designations. So when the article above says "but the gameplay is designed to encourage a fluid combination of cooperation and competition."... that is EXACTLY what LBP features.

@DBuck_Eye: Who is comparing the platforming? Neither the article nor BlackDove said anything about the platforming being similar in LBP and Mario. LBP beat Mario to the punch with the idea of a 4-player competitive platformer where you can both help each other and compete for "coins" and points. That much should be obvious to everyone.

It's the same reason people are comparing Natal and Sony's new controller to the Wiimote even though the technologies are radically different.

Wasn't this basically the game play for Maro Bros. (the 1st one?)

My thoughts as well. I suppose they draw a distinction because that was pure competition.

What about Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers? You had the same abilities in that game way back on the NES to either help eachother through the level, or pick eachother up and throw eachother right into enemies path.

I guess that means no one remembers Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. You were cooperating to fight enemies and solve puzzles, but also racing for heart containers and gems. And who could resist occasionally setting his buddy on fire with the fire rod?
