"if it didn't have the name "Trico" attached to it, nobody would have been impressed"

True, the reason for that is exactly what I've been stressing, Team Ico worked on it, its bound to be good, and I hate to prejudge before games release, but I have a tremendous amount of faith in Team Ico as I do Kojima Production, both of which have yet to let me down. So me, like others are bound to get excited just knowing it's related to team ico, and like I said, if it was releasing like the original trailer on PS3, there would be a negative reception, thats not pushing ps3 power, its PS2 level like you said, but it still looks good, had it not been trico, i wouldn't have known whether it would be good or not, unless it was made by another comany I have faith in, otherwise how else could I get excited about it.

This is the creator of SOTC we are talking about, Ico pushed PS2, SOTC pushed PS2, there was no reason why the tech demo had to be the real thing when I know Team Ico is more then capable of pushing PS3 under Sony's wing. But as I said already, its the concept that got people excited, the originality, not the graphics, show me someone who said the graphics were kick ass for a ps3 game and I'll gladly go beat them with a fish.

In fact, if you recall, people were excited before the tech demo was released after simply seeing a picture of chains, so of course they were going to get excited about the tech demo:

1. Weren't sure if it was real or not, if it was, it needed work but the originality was kick as, if it was fake, it was a pretty damn good fake.

2. It featured the chains from the pic

3. A kitty dragon!!

4. It's the bloody creators of SOTC, isn't that enough reason to get excited?

What else do you want?

I do recall that, and I recall finding it just as stupid.

"4. It's the bloody creators of SOTC, isn't that enough reason to get excited?"

It's enough of a reason to get excited about a game, but it's not enough of a reason to get excited about an incredibly shitty trailer.

I'd also like to say that any thread where Ashitaka is getting upvoted is a thread where those taking part need to seriously take a step back and think about what they're doing. It's like upvoting tmac.

But what were you expecting? Crysis like graphics? It's a tech demo. It got people excited because its based on a game they are looking forward to, theres nothing more to it.

You make it sound as if Trico released it officially, it was leaked, it wasn't supposed to be seen by the public, which is what made it all the more exciting. Of course it looks PS2 standard, the tech demo is old compared to the new one, it was probably back from 2006 or 07 for all we know, we don't even know when that tech demo was made, so you can't critisize it graphics wise because it wasn't meant to blast us away with beauty, if it had been shown at e3 this year looking like that, then YES, you and every one of us would have a right to complain about the trailer, but we've seen the real one and it far outdoes the old version.

And so what if you could stick trico on anything and make it sell, that's marketing, if trico can sell a rock or get people excited about it, then they must be doing something right, right? Look at Halo.

I'm not even sure what it is you're complaining about. People get excited for an unfinished peice of work because they expect the final outcome to be better, especially if the unfinished work already looks good. Gameplay and plot come before graphics, so the art is to demonstrate what you have and get the A-ok before adding the final graphical polish, we saw the concept before the polish, the concept looked good, PS2 standard, yes, but good nonetheless and the potential to be a good game is there, which means the real thing will be....?

Upon seeing the tech demo, I was already trying to think of a good story plot to go with what we had seen, JUST IN CASE it was fake, I'm a writer, I get inspiration from everywhere, so if that tech demo had been fake, I was definatly using the idea to make a little novel (tweaking it of course so as to avoid getting into trouble). Thats to tell you the influence the demo had on me, and thats without it looking as good as it does now.

The older footage was much richer in color. Why does Team Ico always mute the color in their games, Ico, and SotC both look sort of blah as far as the palette goes.
Next gen games and HDTVs make color a must. I love their games but its like theres a thick grey fog everywhere taking away from the experience.

It's kind of funny. Now that we have the technology to make games look better than ever before, many game designers have started making everything completely brown and yellow. :P

Color 'muting' is a way of dealing with tech problems. By reducing the color palette, in short, you can get better frame rates. Why MGS 4 is so much green, but renders at 1080, and Drake's fortune and Resistance 2 are colorful, but at 720p. That said, these are examples of some of the best programmers, who have been around, a while. If you read their tech stuff it's scary what they do to get away with what they do. One thing to remember about the Ico and Collosus stories, they used huge 'lenses' and had astonishing size, and this has to come at some sacrifice. Displaying buildings and monsters this massive takes a toll on hardware and you have to sacrifice somewhere. Programming now is so complex; and it has to answer to the vision of the artists: in ps2's Shadow of the Collosus (I keep spelling it wrong), they had to give up dynamics and color for massiveness-- but that was the most important thing, to convey the story: massive, color, or framerate: on that platform, they made their choice: massive. Here, you get higher resolution, but you still have to make the same choices. And here, moreso than last generation, dynamics are another consideration. This all outlines the weakness in current consoles, as powerful as they are. The ps3 can generate a ton of dynamics, but what cost? So far, I've seen it best done by Naughty Dog, who I think were some of the best programmers of the ps2's life cycle. Not to say that Insomniac and countless others don't have their place-- but everything is giving up something, for some other thing. And in the video above, as per story, Team Ico says, size matters-- we're not going to use some 50mm lens, we're going to use proprietary focusing and perspective technology so that this is shot like a movie; okay; but we have to give up color, to do this; otherwise, we lose framerate, and/or control. The artists have decided, and correctly-- because who among us was not moved by Shadow? Nothing-- no other game I can think of used lenses and perspective in such a film-like way. Yet we had to put up with low dynamics, and low color. But obviously, the story came across, the massiveness was portrayed; despite the lack of color-- put it this way, imagine playing Collosus on the Ratchet and CLank engine? I loves me some R&C, but things deplete in the background, rapidly. Oh sure, you can see them-- which is a "now" generation thing-- persistant backgrounds (actually they did this on ps2)-- but it's using like a 72mm lens, it's fades quickly and gets small quick, so you have less feeling of scale. The feeling of scale is all important and when our consoles will do scale, color, and dynamics, we'll be seeing that on the ps4. Though I suspect from recent developer notes we're going to START seeing it on the ps3, right around 2010/2011, just like the ps2 broke through all these barriers when people learned how to program it. Look at GOW, the developers said, by GOW2, we could make the ps2 SING. They admit they're not making the ps3 sing yet. When they do, we'll be on the cusp of the next generation, which will seem at first more subtle, but will evolve much more rapidly.

yeah, I agree... the kitty dragon definitely looks better, as does the boy to an extent, but his clothes look too bright and oversaturated. I think most of the look of it is better with the older trailer, especially the look of the stones and the stuff at the start; the look of the whole scene when it shows over the kitty dragons head and the ruins and off into the distance just before it comes up with the name of the game look far better in the original IMHO

sorry about our self-righteousness, its just what happens when you actually have a heritage and past to be proud of.

I wish people would stop making silly names for the GRIFFIN like kitty dragon and start calling it what it really is: a Griffin. I mean, it's pretty obvious, it looks almost identical to pretty much every picture of a griffin, see for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin

I agree people should ignore what joystiq stupidly called it "Kitty Dragon" and either call it a "Guardian" in reference to it being "The Last Guardian..or a GRIFFIN in which it is easily based off if anyone cares to do some research.

Actually, it's *not* based off of a griffin. Ueda said in an interview that it's a combination of several different recognisable animals/pets - cats, dogs, birds, etc.

They took this approach because they wanted people to be able to connect to it (like their pet); and because trying to do a realistic dog, or cat, or bird just wouldn't work - there would always be uncanny issues if they tried that.

So 'kitty dragon' is actually a more appropriate name than 'griffin'

It's less accurate because it's more than just a "kitten dragon". saying that just belittles the work they put into designing it. Calling it a Griffin is actually far more accurate because it's using an established name for a mthological fantasy creature that it shares far more in common with.

Just because a person is white doesn't mean they deny the existiance of racism. In fact whites are on the receiving end of racism more often than any one cares to admit

NOW back on topic. 1. It's a GRIFFIN, not a "kitty/doggy dragon". 2. this game looks awesome. 3. i think the kid is of south american heritage. not a dissrespectful comment, just an thought as to his heritage.

Is it just me or does the kid look like he doesn't fit within the rest of the art style? He looks very bright and cartoony where as the kitty-dragon (I think it looks more like a dog) looks more realistic - as realistic as a kitty-dragon can be. The updated footage seems to be a lot blurrier but it looks better, too. The animal looks miles better and so does the little kid.
