Commanding a World War 2-era tank, we piloted ourselves around a handful of different square maps, where a variety of enemy tanks and power-ups laid in our path. The layout of each level's semi-destructible environments helped to dictate our tactics while we dominated Destructoid's Ben Perlee -- er, rather, while he blew himself up, given that ricocheting bullets (even your own) can mean game over. While we weren't exactly jonesin' for more once the demo had ended, Battle Tanks' detailed environments and combination shooter/puzzle gameplay could very easily help us while away an empty Saturday. Too bad we can't rent it.
Hands-on: Battle Tanks

yeah, and that tank game was the only fun part of Wii Play. I wished there was a retail length game of that tank game. This will certainly do!
Wish Sony's ugly orb motion controller was out, this would be even more awesomer if you could control it like the Wii Play tank game.

Combat had ricocheting bullets, if I remember. The WiiPlay version did, too.
Combat, at the time, was great and I played the crap out of it. Now? It sucks, in part because the tanks control in such an annoying way.
This video makes it look true to the original. Which, to me, is bad.

Yeah, reading the description totally made me think of Combat (1977) on the Atari 2600 but with updated graphics.
Combat had a bunch of different modes, one of which was gameplay that included bullets that ricochet.
I guess this would be a mild diversion, but I can't imagine it holding your interest after several plays. It's basically just another flavor of 'Tank'

I remember Bolo on the Apple II. Was a face paced game that had great explosions and a HUGE map. But I never really associated it with a Tank or Combat-type game, because even though you were a tank, I recall having to seek out enemy bases and destroy them, meanwhile they're cranking out mass quantities of drones that are trying to kill you. Good times. Total classic.

I know why this is familiar! this is a TOTAL rip-off / spin-off of a mini game from a old ps1 or ps2 crash bandicoot! NO JOKE and its exactly like this.. with transforming walls.. and bullets that bounce off of walls!

Looks cool, but... Please stop messing around and get 'Return Fire' from the 3DO/PS1 days happening on PSN/LIVE, or the Genesis 'Jungle Strike/Desert Strike/Urban Strike' games up there. I love me some isometric or 3/4 view miniature battlefield attack games!

i think their was a NES Version too .. on 31n1 not sure if anyone remembers what i am talking about .. you had to kill all the enemy tanks around you and before they get to the middle eagle and it get's shot cause if it get's shot it's game over ... and their was like .... 31 Levels i believe it was a fun game too see how long you can last before dying .. sure this game might be different in way but this game still reminds me of this game.

Depending on the price this could be very good or very bad. I'm not sure I follow the article's complaints about not being able to rent - if the price to buy is low enough renting becomes pointless. And some PSN games sell quite cheap. So until we know the price there's no point complaining. It looks like a fun little game with a healthy dose of nostalgia for those of us that remember Combat. It doesn't have to be a 100 hour entertainment monster if it costs eg. $5.99. If it's fun spending a few hours on every few weeks then at that price it's a good buy.

Yeah I also had Combat on my Atari VCS.. and the way the bullets work in this is a direct rip of that game. It was addictive as hell to me as a... tiny little kid but I will reserve judgement on this 'update' of a 31 year old game...
wow I feel old.

Hmm I wonder how long it will be a dilemma. It can't be too long before they role out a rental service. pay to play. If i had some of my more casual gaming friends I could def see plopping down a buck of 2 to rent this for 12 hours or a day pass. PSN already has arcade cabinets in Home, so they could even implement a micro payment plan and cause the rebirth of the Arcade in america.
