Big Surf Island will wash $12.99 out of your wallet

.It's certainly not as costly as some on the Joystiq team feared, but it's also far from an immediate impulse buy. While we understand Criterion wants to "make money" and "feed the family," we lament the long-gone days of free Burnout DLC.

Already got money set aside for this.
ToTheMoon @ Jun 8th 2009 7:31PM
I would be interested to see what sells more units.. This DLC or Forza 3. Too bad we won't find out but after the dickish way that Dan Greenwalt was acting the other day (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/turn-10-on-forza-3-no-game-competes-with-us/) , I would interested to know how well Forza 3 does against Burnout Paradise: Big Surf City. I'm buying this not just out of spite but because it's one heck of a fun game.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 8th 2009 5:24PM
Definitely getting it on ps3 as it's a lot cheaper than I thought it would be. Burnout's one of the few arcade racers (hell, arcade anything) that I like.
Freak Mojo @ Jun 8th 2009 5:25PM
Pass.... that's $13 I can put towards Tiger Woods or the Sims 3 :P
Spiraea @ Jun 8th 2009 5:31PM
Obviously free is better but it's a good price IMO
Misframed @ Jun 8th 2009 5:32PM
Too high... my cheap/crappy iPhone games has made me a miser when comes to DLC... I still want to get Fable 2 DLC but can justify the price to myself...
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 8th 2009 5:35PM
Why? This dlc alone is better value and has a higher quality than every iphone game ever made combined.
Kattleox @ Jun 8th 2009 5:36PM
Criterion can have my money. This island is supposed to be everything good about burnout concentrated, and I'm thinking I'll like it quite a bit.
Magresda @ Jun 8th 2009 5:36PM
First burnout DLC I'll be getting, would buy this even if it was $20.
joeybeast @ Jun 8th 2009 5:36PM
Well, 1039.2 MS Magic Money just sounded strange.
SidearmS @ Jun 8th 2009 5:39PM
I won a "greatest hits" copy of this game from EA last year (doing the online fantasy league football), and it still sits on my shelf because every time I think I want to play it, I remember that this game is LIGHT YEARS now from what came on the disc in the first place.
Normally, this is not a bad thing, but with Burnout Paradise, I keep thinking that this game has jumped the shark, and that by the time I got done adding whatever I would have to add (via Live) to get caught up, it would kill whatever motivation I had to play the game in first place.
After seeing this article and hearing about this announcement, that train of thought is still there. This is not a troll post, this is just a statement as to why some folks out there have just simply given up keeping up with this game. The game on the disc is no longer to game the DLC has turned it into.
A friend told me I could get 70 GS in about five minutes playing this, and not really even trying, and that is still not enough for me to crack the plastic on the case. I will just stick with Burnout Revenge because it does not feel like a "Lego Piecemeal" racing game like this one does now. I know that "turning your game into a platform" is all the rage right now, but I think I have enough "platforms" now to build a thousand treehouses.
GFWL - It was a sad day when I realized that I have lost my zeal for playing this series. Changing the gameplay/gametype with each new paid for DLC might be causing that.
.jpg @ Jun 8th 2009 5:45PM
you realize this is like the first actual thing (a whole new island, not new shit in the same setting) you had to pay for that wasn't just some novelty cars or a party/mp mode right? all the other additions have been free, and will be added when you stick the disc in and update.
Slaziman @ Jun 8th 2009 5:56PM
GFWL?
Master Bruce @ Jun 8th 2009 6:14PM
I hope there are sharks to jump over in Big Surf Island...that would make it even sweeter.
Mike @ Jun 8th 2009 6:15PM
Where is this world coming to where a guy doesn't even want to play a game he got for free... I haven't played this game cause I rarely buy games and pick ones I know I want, but Jesus if it was free I would def be playing this game, go donate your copy to some games 4 kids organization or something.
Why should I have all the fun? @ Jun 8th 2009 6:15PM
I disagree... I think it is a troll post.
Jonathon @ Jun 8th 2009 6:30PM
Burnout Revenge is shit and anyone that actually likes it or nay, puts their enjoyment of it above Burnout: Paradise is a delusional retard.
There. I said it.
This coming from someone who has completed both games beyond 100%.
Fader @ Jun 8th 2009 6:39PM
You only have to download one free update and your copy of the game would be the same as everyone elses. The only thing that the free patch doesn't give you is Cops and Robbers and you can't drive the cars that you can optionally buy. You can still see all of the cars and play with other people who are using those cars.
Basically you refuse to try the game because you don't want to download one single patch...
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 8th 2009 6:40PM
I know a troll post when I see one.
Einhanderkiller @ Jun 8th 2009 6:51PM
PC version of Burnout Paradise doesn't use GFWL.
Roto13 @ Jun 8th 2009 6:58PM
"Basically you refuse to try the game because you don't want to download one single patch..."
Six. :P I started playing this game the other day and there were an absurd number of updates and it took FOREVER to download them all.
But it's an awesome game and I don't see how free updates that actually add content (instead of patching stuff that shouldn't have been broken in the first place like a lot of other developers do) can be a bad thing overall.
Fader @ Jun 8th 2009 7:08PM
"Six. :P I started playing this game the other day and there were an absurd number of updates and it took FOREVER to download them all."
That is weird. I started playing when patch 1.7 was already out and I don't remember ever having to download anything other than the most current patch. Like you said though, it is an awesome game and worth patching to play it.
il_duce620 @ Jun 8th 2009 5:44PM
Still getting it. $13 well-spent.
CommieCOZY @ Jun 8th 2009 5:54PM
$12.99 for the ps3 release? Why do I have to pay 49¢ more?
Damian @ Jun 8th 2009 5:58PM
Its 40 cents, thats nothing, dont be a prick.
Why should I have all the fun? @ Jun 8th 2009 6:16PM
cuz yer ugly and your mother dresses you funny.
Jonathon @ Jun 8th 2009 6:44PM
You're getting more Trophies than the XBox people are getting to Achievements.
VaultICEE @ Jun 8th 2009 7:54PM
You're getting sharper graphics, more trophies, and a sub sandwich
Rhamsey @ Jun 8th 2009 6:03PM
im still hoping for a discount (even a dollar off) for those of us who bought party mode.
AndyS @ Jun 8th 2009 6:05PM
This is the first DLC that I think they've been reasonable on their pricing with. They've got my MS points on this one.
Yingerman @ Jun 8th 2009 6:10PM
I dont get it, it adds 1/3 of the game on and costs 65% of the full game. I say at least lower the party and C&R packs and make this $10
Roto13 @ Jun 8th 2009 6:59PM
Psst. This content is new and not like two years old like the rest of the game. It's like saying Burnout Paradise 2 should be $20.
Nadril @ Jun 8th 2009 6:48PM
Will they be putting this out to PC as well?
Cosmo @ Jun 8th 2009 8:04PM
Hope so, I believe there is also some DLC for Burnout Paradise which is on the 360/PS3 but still not PC yet. : (
Fader @ Jun 8th 2009 6:49PM
The price isn't bad but I wonder how much there is to accomplish other than driving around for fun? The smashes and billboards will probably take a few hours to collect but according to the achievements there are only 10 new freeburn challenges. 100 challenges would be ok but 10 challenges probably won't take more than an hour to finish.
Levi @ Jun 8th 2009 6:49PM
Confirmed already on the disc. Unlock code. Fail, etc, etc.
Ezio Auditore (Now equipped with double blades!) [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 8th 2009 6:59PM
what? no one in their right mind would say that about this. we've seen how long it's been in development.
VaultICEE @ Jun 8th 2009 7:55PM
If you're not trolling, link plz
pjak @ Jun 11th 2009 5:33AM
No, already in-patch you mean. Patch 1.90 (413mb) on PS3 - all in-game graphics are changed again with Burnout Paradise Big Surf Island logos/colors - lol
nightjohn6 @ Jun 8th 2009 7:09PM
13 bucks for nine new cars, 45 new billboards, new burning routes, new showtimes, 12 new bike night/day road rules, and a new event type! Please Criterion take my money so I can play this already.

Darlaten @ Jun 8th 2009 7:40PM
Anyone who complains about $13.00 isn't the type of person who should be gaming in the first place. The phrase "Cheap Bastards" ala Morgan Webb comes to mind. Sheesh, give you're head a shake.
And if you can't afford it - dont buy one pack of cigarettes; or 7 cans of coke; or two pieces of pizza. Get the hint - it's $13.00 friggn dollars - that's not a lot of money. Hell, walk around your city for a few days and you should be able to scrounge that up fron the streets. :)
God I love people. Seriously, Criterian, here's my wallet and take what you need - this is going to be fun!
KINGSNOOPY26 @ Jun 8th 2009 11:46PM
This is criterion we read your comment and are willing to receive your wallet!
KINGSNOOPY26 @ Jun 8th 2009 11:49PM
This is Criterion we read your comment and we are willing to receive your money........ so hand it over!
Gemini Ace @ Jun 9th 2009 9:09AM
You will never understand the point us "cheap bastards" are trying to make. The rise of DLC pricing is not going to stop until people like you stop buying it. It's only $13? Next time it will be $16 or even $20. Is that ok? I mean, it's only $30.
Stop being part of the problem.
Khaled @ Jun 8th 2009 7:56PM
I was planning to buy this, but not anymore. I'll be getting BF 1943 and Fat Princess.
Khaled @ Jun 8th 2009 8:05PM
I changed my mind. I'll be getting this. I hope it releases this month because many games next month.
Autobot @ Jun 8th 2009 8:13PM
Comes out Thursday.
belovedconsole @ Jun 8th 2009 9:04PM
I see this price as totally acceptable-- and I only want it for a new place to drive around in. I think of all the staff and artists, testers, and programmers they've been paying for months to make this happen, and make it balanced and fun, look and play great. EA were very smart to build a huge fanbase with excellent free download content. With this, they've made something that continues to support the players and the franchise, while offering hours of playtime more justified than the cost of a movie and a soda.
Snappy @ Jun 9th 2009 8:07PM
I will just have to look at my xbox and it will buy this DLC. Can't wait!
David Weddell @ Jun 11th 2009 6:14AM
