Yeah, but here in the EU - sony send a currior to pick up the console itself and put it in their own box on the doorstep so i didn't need to use the box :p

When I got the RROD a few months ago, I packed my 360 myself, rather than wait for a coffin. But you can bet I kept the coffin my refurb 360 arrived in. I'm pretty resigned to sending this replacement unit back at some point, and I've got the perfect box just waiting. Now I'm extra glad of the foresight.

I knew someone that used an Amazon.com book box, and it barely fit. They did fix the 360.

I paid for a box the last time I sent my 360 in... It cost me over $15 for a box, packing materials, etc at the UPS Store... and that was with the shipping already paid... As many times as I have had to send my console in, if I had to pay that much each time, I could have bought a new arcade unit...

If you go to just about any retailer, they will give you boxes free.
I know target does(i work there), and im sure walmart will too. Liquor stores are great for boxes, because liquor always comes in reinforced boxes. They all just get thrown in the baler anyways. All you have to do is ask.
Packing foam is about $4 a brick, and tape is less than $2.

Next time, instead of paying someone $9 to pack your xbox for you, try being more resourceful.

Theres a mail place in walking distance of my condo. They package the xbox for you, in a nice box, with packaging, for a whopping $3. Even I can afford this.

Of course you can. You live in a fucking condo. You could have used the word "home", but no, you had to show everyone you have money by saying condo.

Ignore me.

If it makes you guys feel any better, the only reason I live in a condo is because Im a live at home college student.

Also, I play my games on a 24 inch screen, I have nothing but basic cable, I have a 9 year old hyundai for a car, which is currently appraised at $1800, and my tv, xbox screen, and computer monitor are all the same thing. Im not exactly rich.

And yes, $3 isnt that much money.

"People talk about things at blogs."

Yeah, but comments for a post like this turn into noise pretty quickly; it's the bane of any highly-trafficked game blog. However, Joystiq's commenting community doesn't froth at the mouth nearly as often as Kotaku's when a 360/PS3 post goes up. It's almost like Kotaku kunts wait for it and when it happens you've got 100 bullshit comments in 15-20 minutes.

What a pain in the ass. They're not happy with how much money they're spending making boxes to ship their defective products in? Then fix the fucking product.

Wow, what total bullshit. Not only do they knowingly ship defective units, but they also now refuse to provide the means of getting the consoles to them for repair when they brake (Which they inevitably will).

Fuck Microsoft.

My falcon rrod'ed last week and I definitely wasn't given a box option. The instructions said explicitly to pack it up myself and not use the original box since I wouldn't get back. I'm still surprised about the rrod... I specifically bought a falcon to avoid it.

What about those that paid for an extended warrantee which outlines that a box and shipping would be provided if repairs were needed? I think MS should be handing out some partial refunds if they are going to end the “coffin” program when it comes to them.

Last night I got my first ever RROD in over 2 years. My game froze up and I had to power down. Started up again by loading my game and it froze up. Seems it just overheated. For the past few months though i've been getting disc read errors when the disc is perfectly clean. Shutting down and restarting fixes it. Luckily all these problems are minor compared to some problems people have.

I just bought the new Xbox 360 for a bedroom, so it looks like i'll be swapping them out.

So what is the most common cause of RROD? Overheating? I bought one of those intercoolers. Maybe that will help. Too bad everything has to be so loud to play games..

Thanks for the worthless reply. It's for a media server and I already have a PS3 in the basement.

It was either go with a WD media center for $100-$130 or spend some extra money and just get an Xbox 360 and be able to play games as well.

I'll pretty much buy every system that has games on it I want to play. Unfortunately right now the games I want to play are on the Xbox 360.

Well, I did save the last box from my 5th or 6th repair... I'm losing track. I'll definitely keep that in mind though about finding the largest box I can next time....maybe I'll put some bricks in with it... "Those bricks are in there for padding and protection!". "Plus I wanted my 360 to be with its own kind for the long journey back". Expediting my ass... if they wanted to expedite the repair process they would take your credit card number for ransom and just send you a new console as soon as you report yours broken and follow the troubleshooting steps. You would ship the bad console back and if they receive it and it is indeed broken your credit card number never gets charged. Simple. That would be the expedited option. They could have other options for those without credit cards.

How is something that is happening now with MS relevant to an issue that was resolved in 2005?

Huh...Appears as though I just got under the wire too. RROD 2 weeks ago, finally got around to initiating the service request last week. I still had the choice to have them send me a box. Shipped it back Friday night..and they have already "fixed" it and sent it back to me. Should show up tomorrow.

Guess I'll be holding onto the box.

It's relevant because Sony treated their customers the same way, something that people conveniently forget.

I'm not defending MS and the way they handled the 360's quality control and launch because it cannot be defended and their business practices are deplorable; but anyone thinking that Sony is a bastion of quality product and excellent customer care is just fooling themselves.

I've been in specialty retail directly related to gaming for a long time and the original PS2 was a peice of trash quality wise and easily comparable to the peice of trash quality wise that the original 360's were - and in my experience at a comparable rate.

Didn't stop either console from being an excellent gaming experience.

I called on Saturday for my coffin. They told me they would send it and after reading this article I called. They informed that yes the representative should have mentioned it to me that they would only be sending me a pre mailing slip and not the box. Oh well. This is my second...here's hoping for never having a third.

Good going Microsoft.. but yknow there could have been an easier way to do this. First you start by not using inferior chipsets and having a 60% failure rate.

I still have my replacement box from my RRoD issue. I'll keep it. I have little faith in the hardware.

And to anyone saying "Shut up, this doesn't happy near as much anymore!" tell that to the 4 or 5 friends across the continent that have been out of commission because of their box dying.

One person was last month. Another was a few months ago. Just lost contact with a friend for this reason last week.

Purchase dates on system? It ranges. There's not many for the new systems yet because they're not "old enough" yet to have problems.

Give it time. I'm sure the RRoD will find its way back into the loving hearts of our systems. Buying an arcade was like a mini reset button.

My 7th xbox just had a hardware failure. It no longer reads discs. And it just missed the 1 year warranty by a few days so they expect me to pay 99.99 US dollars to fix it and supply my own box and pay for shipping. Pretty gay. Year old 360 Elite and I have to pay 100 bucks to fix it after 6 previous console failures. I'm probably going to go ahead and have it fixed because I still enjoy it better than my PS3 and Wii. Atleast I still have my PC working fine though.

Did a RRoD request last week - no coffin. Not a big deal, but it immediately made me think they could use "packing deficiency" as a reason to refuse.

I wonder how much money MS Games Division would be making were it not for all these defects. It's gone from nobody I know having it happen to EVERYONE I know with an Xbox having it happen multiple times.

If MS designed a car it would have no front grill, no radiator and the exhaust would be designed to "float" off the engine.
