Sony and Microsoft both had something up their sleeves when it came to motion-based controls at this year's E3, revealing a new controller and Project Natal, respectively. Nintendo has been doing it since late 2006, but this year, both Sony and Microsoft have hopped on the waggle bandwagon. Games analyst Michael Pachter told Edge that despite these new product announcements, Nintendo really has nothing to worry about.
"We do not expect either to displace Nintendo's Wii from its leadership position," Pachter said. He went on further to say that Microsoft's Natal is really only aimed toward interface improvement, and that Sony's new controller is simply "Wii-nis envy," justifying his company's opinion that the Wii will still be the top console for a long time. We're inclined to agree, mostly because Sony and Microsoft's new products won't be on store shelves for quite some time.

I don't understand how this will work without buttons. If I want to shoot a gun, I currently make a VERY small movement that can be recognized by the system virtually instantaneously. Why would I want to have to make some gesture that the sustem may or mayu not recognize?
I just don't understand the excitement unless we're talking about some party games and whatnot. Why anyone would want to use this for an FPS or Gears of War is completely beyond me.

Man..... American's are a stingey lot, $50 is about £20 -£25 (Economy Permitting), I would realistically expect this to fetch for about as much as Rock band or an extra hard drive £69.99 and thats a good bit more than your poor assed currencies $100.......

The main difference here is that the Natal and PS motion wands are motion-gaming PERIPHERALS while the Wii is a motion-gaming CONSOLE. Until MS and Sony rebrand their consoles to be completely motion-gaming, I doubt they will affect Wii's sales.

I'm much more interested in putting a Natal-like gesture recognition on my PC than a 360. I crave the day when I can plug the display onto my TV instead of my tiny monitor, sit back on the couch, and browse the net with an air keyboard. (Too bad Linux will probably never get this).
And I hope they will let me strangle that damn paperclip Office helper.

I have to agree...I really dun see MS or Sony will overtake th wii for this gen...esp with both of them JUST coming out....Furthurmore, developers take time to make quality games for this kind of controls.
And a very offtopic comment but if i have to say which company's moiton sensing i find more promising, i would have to say it's Natal. Sony's motion sensing looks quite similar to the wii (it requires a controller)
If natal works well, it would probably change the next gen consoles of the future.

you do relise that sony´s new controllers work with the playstation eye (a perfected version of the eyetoy)which CAN TRACK YOUR WHOLE BODY and those little ball controllers. what you most likely meant was: mocrosofts motion sensing looks quite similar to the eyetoy (it cant use a motion controller)

so why not do it? IMHO i think sony should have perfected the Eye toy rather than make another wii-estque thing. I mean why do u need a controller?
MS vision of using just ur body is more appealing rather than to have to hold a controller.

@ Ex14 : you do relise that sony DID perfect the Eyetoy with its slitly old playstation eye bfor the PS3(its 2 years old) wich is better than natal (it can track YOUR WHOLE BODY and those little ball controllers) while natal can ONLY track your body.

All they need is
A. Good marketing
B. A Killer app
and Nintendo will have every cause to be worried.
Seriously, people will pay for perceived value hence why I left out price

well microsoft practically copied our wii community now they copy the nintendo wii-mote controller. And sony copied the super nintendo controller and added extra shoulder buttons and other things. why cant they be innovators themselves?
