I think if you are going to redo a game of this magnitude, you need to update the graphics and also include the old ones as an option to play with.

Well that's a touchy situation. Personally if they update the graphics and make it all spiffy, all the old-school tards like myself will look away, but if you're new to Perfect Dark or any other remake, it's hard to look at a game with such outdated graphics.

I think as long as you can add in shaders and lighting effects, fix some obvious broken models and have it look good, it's way too much work to update ALL of the models in a game.

Yeah, I can't see myself buying an "updated" Perfect Dark. More to the point, I can't see the devs updating all the graphics in a full-length game that they plan to charge 10 or 15 dollars for.

The FRAMERATE, however, should be helped as much as possible. I think we can all agree on that. Though we tend to remember them through rose-tinted glasses, N64 shooters had a very poor framerate. I'm not even sure old-school retards like myself and Thief would be able to stomach it, much less anyone playing it for the first time.

I don't care as much for the graphics as for the fact they need to cram all the Goldeneye levels in here as possible.

They have already been beaten to it:

In case your wondering, they are doing Goldeneye too:

Both of them free of charge (assuming you own a copy of HL2)

It does look a lot better, even though It hasn't really recieved any upgrades, which I wouldn't have expected anyway. The higher resolution and lack of blurryness helps a lot, and the 60fps should make it less of a pain to play.

With online deathmatches, co-op and counter-op this is easily going to be worth the 1,200 points. They still haven't said anything about the Goldeneye content though, so I think we can assume that's coming as a seperate game, which is a little disappointing.

Still, can't wait to see Nintendo and Activisions faces when they release James "Bean" 64 :)

The textures are clearly improved, in addition to the framerate improvement and 1080p option (both of which are confirmed). On top of this, most comparison shots I've seen are through emulators, which have drastically better anti-aliasing applied. I don't know about anyone else, but on my TVs the N64 was generally a blurry mess.

I mean, we're probably talking like $15 for one of the best console FPS experiences out there (even still) with online play. If it was on Wii I'd be paying $10 for it exactly as it was before with better anti-aliasing.

I don't see the problem.

Eh? Goldeneye is never coming to XBLA. Nintendo prevented it from happening.

Rumours were the content would be integrated into Perfect Dark or released as a seperate game, under the code name of Bean. Like all of Rares other games, Nintendo don't own the code or anything, so they can't stop it from being released (which is why it WAS coming to XBLA) it's only Activision and the Bond liscence stopping it.

But if they remove the Bond characters, change up some of the levels and change the name of the game, then there's nothing anyone can do to stop it being released. We've seen a game named "Bean" on a few of the same screenshots that leaked the Perfect Dark information, and allegedly, that's what it is.

One thing I loved about the multiplayer was that the game kept track of play time, kills, etc. PD was one of the first games (at least that I played) that kept track of that stuff. If all they do was revamp the controls to use dual sticks, I would be happy and buy it. A change in graphics only sweetens the deal for me.

I seem to post this every time a PD thread comes up...

You can use an Xbox 360 controller with an emulated copy of PD in which you map controller 1 to one stick and controller 2 to the other stick (PD let you play with 2 N64 controllers at once to achieve dual analogs).

I tried this out for a while and it works exceptionally well. Although it still had many flaws, I was able to get along much better. If they truly fix the controls; i.e., make them nice and fluid, it will finally be worth finishing this game on the Dark difficulty (IIRC).

Also, I played this a couple weeks ago with 3 friends and it was almost unplayable. The framerate sucked and went straight to hell during any explosion. This update is very welcome.

A shame the single-player didn't match Goldeneye's but the multi-player was great. Laptop guns were my favourite, you could be so sneaky luring people into a crossfire of you and a lappy turret. :)

no your right. it didnt match goldeneyes single-player mode. IT SURPASSED IT! perfect dark is superior to goldeneye in every single way. and the difficulty of perfect dark only makes it that more fun. hopefully 4J is only ADDING to the game in terms of online and higher resolution and they leave everythin alone and not SUBTRACT. simply put: leave everything thing alone cept visuals and add online.

I agree with tunicy. I loved the single player. great misisons, enough challenge. Anybody I talked to and said it was better than goldneye would immediately get defensive, and stay that way until they played. I am not discounting goldeneye, cause it opened the door to modern FPS, but PD is a step further down the path, not a backwards step.

I think this is one of the games where having played it in its glory days is a critical component. For example, I would have an immensely difficult time believing anyone who never played Goldeneye when it came out, yet claimed to love it years later when they finally got around to playing it.

Myself, and 3 friends included, used to play the absolute hell out of this game both at release, and literally for more than 5 years after that. The game absolutely shined in multiplayer.

That being said, if someone hasn't played it before and doesn't have their nostalgia glasses at the ready, I'd recommend they don't bother buying Perfect Dark off XBLA at this point.

Personal opinion and all, but someone in another post suggested that the original Wolfenstein still had staying power, which it absolutely doesn't. And imo, neither does this.

These kind of comments are why I fear for the future of games. I beat this game on hard when I was like 13 years old, without any guides or help. Seriously, do you really need the game holding your hand the whole time? This game is about being a secret agent, not a 1 man tank.

Every game is going to turn into a casual, easy waste of time because the big babies dont like losing. Everyone just wants everything handed to them so they can master the game in 5 minutes.

I remember having a great time with this back in the day. My friend and I used to set up a bunch of bots and hold up a room with laptops guns set up to blast them as they came around. And the pacifist bot is hilariously awesome.

I actually plugged my N64 back in recently with fond memories of how fun it was only to be punched in the face by framerates that can only be described as "horrendous".

I'm looking forward to this update to be sure.

The sad thing is that I don't think a single game has topped this as far as single-console multiplayer goes.

For one, Halo sucks at it. I don't know if it's Bungie being lazy or MSFT pushing XBL, but Halo has yet to give you bots. Yeah, being able to take 4 people on one console online is awesome, but for one it's a disadvantage to everyone on that screen, and it's impossible to control your experience. If you have someone that's never played they'll be miserable and probably quit.

Then there's Gears of War 2. They add bots, thankfully, but without individual bot control. You can't make a team of 2 very hard and 2 very easy bots. You can't dumb the bots on your team down yet fight smart ones (I don't think.) So, it's there, which is beautiful, but a bit lacking.

Perfect Dark was just, well, perfect. I played regularly with two friends, one very good and one not as good. We might do the two of us that were good against the one that wasn't on a team with two good bots. Or we might do the three of us against a team of four awful bots and another team with one PerfectBot (or was it DarkBot?) We might do all three of us alone against a team of 4 medium bots. We could keep changing it up, slightly altering the experience but controlling it so that we always had a challenge yet slight advantage.

If people keep losing they probably quit, which I've seen in Halo 3. If people keep winning too easily they stick around but have less fun, which I've seen in GoW2. But if you can balance it so it's always a challenge yet you win most of the time people get addicted.

Wow, I agree 10000%. I had a friend I played this game with all the time and we never needed online. In fact, after I got into online gaming I realized I missed PD64's bot system a lot. Just like you said, we would tailor it to meet how many of us were playing, etc, the bots could be fucking hard to play at times. You miss some of the randomness of human players, but the game was 4-player w/bots so you could have teams mixed with up to 8 bots that had a huge list of "personalities".

We used to have to put an ice-pack on the "memory expansion" so we could play in hi-res, or it would freeze up. :P

4J Studios are a small, Dundee based games developer, they typically handle ports. They also did Banjo Kazooe and Banjo-Tooie for XBLA, both of which are also owned by Microsoft and have zero chance of being released on anything else.

The same is true of Perfect Dark, it's simple been given to 4J Studios to get working on XBLA, but the fact the game, liscence, characters and everything else about it is completely owned by Microsoft means it won't be going anywhere.

You have the same chance of seeing Mario Galaxy 2 ported to the PS3 as you do seeing Perfect Dark coming to it.

This was an unexpected gem of news. Perfect Dark was one of my favorite games for the N64. Recently I broke out the N64 and tried to play the game again however my mind couldn't re-wire itself to get use to the awkward control scheme. The graphics in the game did not age well either. Perfect Dark is a great choice of a game to update and port as the gameplay is still very solid.

There's a difference between hard gameplay and bad gameplay. I don't mind being thrust into a hard puzzle with no clues, but when there's the chance of randomly failing (based on some fail criteria about which there are also no clues) only to be forced to replay the entire level up to that point, I get really pissed. If you can't possibly see the failure coming, it's bad game design. In an attempt at a little thing called immersion, games have evolved beyond the trial-and-error you're-going-to-absolutely-die-here-the-first-time type of gameplay because it's cheap and frustrating. There are better ways to make games hard than unpredictable impossible traps, but they require a little cleverness and not an easy way out.

Having said that, I've never played PD, but I can completely understand Shadow Hog's complaints if they are accurate representations.
