According to the most recent data, Call of Duty 4 has sold nearly 3 hojillion units since its 2007 release, and Activision says that a fifth of Call of Duty: World at War players were new to the franchise. By its math, that means Modern Warfare 2 is poised to become the biggest-selling Call of Duty game ever.
We don't want to be jerks about this, and we know it's not really the point but at what point does this stop being a Call of Duty game? Like, is the absence of the words "call," "of," and "duty" from the title not enough to separate it from the franchise? At what point to restraining orders need to be involved?

I wonder how many were new to the series with CoD4..? I'm guessing it was larger than the 1/5th they're saying it is for World at War. I borrowed CoD 2 & 3 from a friend and felt neither warranted a buy.
I'm also thinking that as long as that Activision is on a yearly release schedule for the franchise they're going to be dividing their online multiplayer community into segments. There will always be those that completely reject the "new" thing. Calling the new game "lame" because a minor teak to their favorite rifle doesn't allow them to pwn noobs anymore (plus you also have your fanboys; Boo WWII! Yay WWII! Taste Great! Less Filling!).
I'm not really sure what one can do to convince those that think along those lines. I swear I have a friend that spurns Halo multiplayer because he thinks "shooting aliens with lasers is stupid." Even though he's an avid sci-fi movie fan... go figure.

I have a feeling that the title change will have a small effect on sales. I was in my local Gamestop the other day and the clerk was trying to get a guy to pre-order MW2, but the guy refused because it didn't have the "COD" title on it so he was skeptical. I mean think about it, how many people say "I'm playing Modern Warfare". Most people say "I'm playing Call of Duty".

If they make the scene above where you are jumping off a building like that f'in helo jump off the ship in the first Modern Warfare, so help me I'm going to burn something down.
No one makes it on the first try. Or second. Or third...

I will be buying both MAG and MW2. I've already preordered MW2, I'm waiting for a while to preorder MAG. But honestly, these are two different games that will appeal to different types of people. The MAG crowd is going to suck alot of the Warhawk and SOCOM crowd in, while MW2 has a built in audience.
While I don't know about the lag, I don't think E3 can really be a good place to judge it's performance. I've heard there were big problems with the internet connection in the LACC, to the point where the hall that Sony was in lost connection altogether at one point. AT&T probably lost their network too with all those Iphones in one place.

It's clear why Call of Duty 5 (Modern Warfare 2, and no it's NOT 6) is not a Call of Duty game:
After the debacle that was Call of Duty 3 Activision put the next Treyarch Call of Duty Game under a subtitle instead of a true number. Then when Infinity Ward came around to do the real Call of Duty 5, the moderate success that was World at War (quality-wise at least) was going to look like a chump if Infinity Ward flatout disowned them like that, so Activision forced Call of Duty 5 to change its name to Modern Warfare 2 so they could try to act like their plan the whole time was to use the subtitles instead of the numbers. I remember when World at War was coming out Activision was using the excuse of, "Well, we're not calling it Call of Duty 5 because everyone who plays Cod4 calls it Modern Warfare instead of Call of Duty 4 name." Uhhh, I've never heard one person EVER call it 'Modern Warfare'. Ever. It's stupid and the worthless Treyarch should NOT be allowed to compromise the new real Call of Duty game!

Ah, but World at War is clearly not numbered because it wasn't supposed to be a real entry in the series. It's really more of a CoD4 expansion that turned out worse than 4. It's like Call of Duty: United Offensive, which was a CoD1 expansion developed by a non-Infinity Ward dev. People who call WaW Call of Duty 5 are the dumbshits. Infinity Ward IS Call of Duty.

I'm not just happy , I'm bleeping ecstatic that Modern Warfare 2 is coming out! Plus it's nice ot see that Activision are publishing a solidly good sequel, full of quality improvements and updates not just a new list of "songs to choose from"
