While perusing through the Joystiq Pile o' E3 Trailers™, we realized we had forgotten to post this gorgeous direct-feed footage of Gran Turismo 5. It flashed by too quickly during the Sony press conference for us to truly understand all the new features hidden in the trailer. Here's what we noticed:
Damage! We captured this still frame from the trailer, showing off what appears to be a new damage model for vehicles. Look at the bent hood, the crack on the car's side. Are those scratches in the car's paint? We think so.
FIA World Rally Championship The off-road challenges in Gran Turismo 5 look absolutely gorgeous, showcasing the engine's impressive ability to render particles.
NASCAR This is a huge license for GT5 to feature as NASCAR fans are as hardcore as they come. With EA Sports slowly pulling away from the franchise, hardcore racing enthusiasts will turn to GT for their fix. The vehicle liveries look accurate -- important for the NASCAR fan.
New cockpit view Finally, we were treated to a second of footage from what appears to be a new cockpit view. The camera seems to be pulled farther back, revealing more of the drivers inside. It doesn't seem practical for races, but it is very dramatic.
What else can you pinpoint in the trailer? Check it out after the break.
Nascar is a bout more than just making left turns. turning vectors and tuning play a huge part of it too. Knowing when to get underneath a car you're trying to pass so that you come into the straight away ahead of him. knowing when your car has the grip that you can stay high and still pass someone because you have a superior tuned engine. Or even desideing when you should pit because you want to be the only car in first place when they leader goes for fuel. It's a very strategic race.
This trailer gives me goosebumps every time I see it. Can't wait but I have to say I wish we could have seen a real time demonstration of the game or at least a concrete release date. With the long development cycle and features packed into the game there is no doubt in my mind when it releases it will be the best racing game ever created with the most varied and unique content.
How did you miss this to begin with??? I was watching E3 just like you guys with not only your constantly refreshed web page but the automatic feed live blog that PSU.com had and the second I saw it was was like: Damage in GT5?! put that down, put that down! WTF PUT IT DOWN. it seriously dissapointed me that your reaction was "did it have damage it went by to fast" Dude it was practically slow damn motion!!
Umm, why in the world did the Indianapolis Motor Speedway give them the track liscense but not try and get them to have the IndyCar Series liscense as well? That doesn't make any sense to me. It makes me want to go up to 16th and Georgetown (about 30 mins or less from me) and have a serious discussion with Tony George. That's an egghead move. You realize how many IndyCar Fans would have been made with GT5??? Oh...well.
As...for the game...it looks really good. I'm refusing to buy GT5 Prologue since I am waiting on this and will only be buying this unless I find a really great deal on Prologue. I'm a huge fan of the GT series, and I'm tired of waiting. Is Forza going to drop 2 full games on the next gen before GT5 drops??? I hope not, but sure am happy to see the competition growing. Both games look equally impressive.
lol i know thats what im saying, this has alll been stuff that was already included with forza. People just love grand turismo for its pretty cars, thats prett much it ando oh and its 3/4 realistic simulation
The damage in Forza 2 is not very realistic or good, so I don't think that's worth bragging about. If damage in GT 5 looks like it does in that trailer, then it looks like the wait will be worth it because like everything that Polyphony does...they get it right.
Yeah, doesnt everyone realise racing simulators are judged by the graphics and their developers rush to just include as many features as possible because that instantly makes it a better game. Look at Danica Patrick, she's only fast because she's hot and has additional 'features' the other drivers dont have!
Shallowness != Greatness
Oh yey for arcade racers like Forza, adding some shiney shiney so all the little nub kiddies go running off to play with it. Racing games have had damage for over a decade, but not have come close to acheiving what GT has, and now they've added visual effects, but its always had what matters. I'll settle for the mediocre GT series which implements the meaningful things first, and adds afterthoughts later on.
I wonder if it's a possibility that the damage is only in rally car mode, or something like that...
Maybe polyphony was able to get the manufacturers go ahead on cars that regularly show damage (rally car), and not on the expensive super cars, luxury cars and exotics.
A long time ago they commented that thered be damage for things like rally cars and racing cars specifically but they had a rough time convincing the regular automakers to agree to it. It's been almost a year since they said that so there's a chance that's changed by now.
Jeez Joystiq how late do you receive news nearly a week old? I find it quite ridiculas how late you guys have left it to document this. It's been on GTPlanet the minute the Trailer went live. Get your act together guys. I can honestly say I could have done a better job myself documenting this.
"While perusing through the Joystiq Pile o' E3 Trailers™, ***we realized we had forgotten to post this*** gorgeous direct-feed footage of Gran Turismo 5."
Bah, they used stroke for the yellow in Gordon's flames and it disappears when you save it as a compressed filetype (.tga or .dds), I could've done better then that! :p
Hate to break it to you guys, but Forza 2 had the dust on the side of the cars. I CANNOT wait for GT5 AND Forza 3 to come out. GT5 will, in fact, be the greatest racing simulation game of this decade, if not ever.
GT5 Prologue looked amazing but was a meh kinda game, mainly because of how it was structured. It FORCED you to buy certain cars to do certain races before you could unlock the next set of challenges. Also, even though you raced against 15 other cars it alays felt kinda fixed, there was no qualifying, so you always had to start at the back and fight your way to the front by way of a nigh on perfect race, which was extremely dull and often frustrating.
The joy of GT has always been building up your garage and tackling the myriad of race events how YOU want to, and that's why despite my apathy at GT5P I am literally wetting myself in anticipation for this new one, especially after that E3 trailer. Car damage (at least in the licensed WRC and NASCAR events) 16 player online racing, X number of cars (at least 800, if GT PSP is anything to go by), tons of new tracks (and old favourites, AND the Top Gear test track!) jaw dropping HD graphics (GT5P was just a showcase, this will be the real deal) and of course a good old fashioned GT career mode. Could this bethe perfect racing game?
Maybe, now just confirm a damn release date already! :)
Im sure that article says showing "more of the drivers insides." that really would be impressive damage. Do we have any ideas when this game is out? or are we still on the rough before april 2010
I'm so excited for this game. I'm going to hold off on Prologue because as much as I love this series, I don't like $30 demos. >____>
One thing I really, REALLY hope GT5 does: create a complete back catalog of tracks from previous games. GT4's selection was great, but there was one track that i really missed from GT3- Special Stage Route 11. While not as good as SSR5, it's still one of my favorite tracks. Overall, though, if they gave me the GT4 back catalog I'd be happy.
From the looks of this trailer:
Ohhhh my. They have outdone themselves.
Someone said it earlier, but I'll echo it- everything that Polyphony Digital does, they get right. So ready for this game.
in an interview about need for speed shift a member working on the title said that they were allowed to incorarate damage eg. stratches and dents on the car but some body parts had to stay on the car eg. bonnet, doors and bumpers
looks like real-time tire deformation as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is fricking awesome. a feature i have up till now only seen in Live for Speed. i have urinated and defecated on myself a few times now....
Looks pretty sweet. Had this come out two years ago I would probably have a PS3 instead of a 360. Actually, I might get even a PS3 when this finally comes out four years from now. In the meantime I'll just was another month for Forza 3.
