Green Day coming to Rock Band in some capacity

"Yeah, we're doing a whole Green Day Rock Band, uh ..." Armstrong responded, unable to finish his sentence due to a swell of applause. Green Day Rock Band what? Game? Downloadable track pack? Expansion disc? Guitar decal line? Instructional video? Whatever it is, we'll find out about it soon, because it's supposed to be out by the end of the year.
The band, having just previously made fun of social networking, went on to discuss how they were too old to play Rock Band well. That's how you connect with your young audience!

Would have been cool.....about 4 or 5 years ago.
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Jun 9th 2009 9:35AM
No it was never cool.
gib @ Jun 9th 2009 10:32AM
When did it become cool to hate Green Day? That is all I ever hear anymore, and it is getting annoying. I understand if you have moved on to other bands or other musical tastes, but this is getting out of control. Green Day bashing is just a poor attempt to prove you aren't trying to be mainstream, but everyone is doing it... which means it is mainstream.
Maxwell Ash @ Jun 9th 2009 11:07AM
I'm not trying to be cool or anything. I just don't like Green Day. I liked them 5 years ago. I have better taste now.
drumwiz86 @ Jun 9th 2009 11:42AM
yeah anything after nimrod is garbage
Sisyphus @ Jun 9th 2009 11:43AM
I've always hated them. Their crappy music gives punk a bad name.
Sam @ Jun 9th 2009 11:55AM
I remember back when Green Day was my favorite band about 3 or 4 years ago. Now whenever I hear about them, I'm just like "eh". It's probably because they went for about 4 years without any new stuff, and the album that just came out didn't have anything good on it.
shannon @ Jun 9th 2009 12:22PM
when was green day ever punk? and, yes, they suck. unless you like whiny music. then they're probably awesome.
Jay Voorhees @ Jun 9th 2009 12:25PM
4 or 5 years ago? Damn, I feel so old around here sometimes. Do some early Green Day, Thow in a bunch of Weezer, some early Incubus, some sublime, Beastie Boys, and maybe a little dispatch to round it out. Now there's a rockband that i'd go to Gamestop at midnight for.
Dragod @ Jun 9th 2009 2:09PM
@Shannon: Ever heard of Dookie? If not there's no way you've heard of Kerplunk! or 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.
Damn. Looks like I'm going to be buying Rock Band. :(
Green Day is a great band and there's a reason people call them sellouts; They made good music, they got popular, and their old fans called them sellouts. If you claimed to like Green Day, but then abandoned them when they became "too mainstream", well, then you're not much of a fan. What kind of fan says "I really hope they never get very popular so that I can be one of the only ones who likes them"?
Shadow El @ Jun 9th 2009 3:19PM
"It's probably because they went for about 4 years without any new stuff, and the album that just came out didn't have anything good on it."
Fantasic classic rock-influenced album that's strong in music, lyrics, and production isn't good? Compared to what?
stevan @ Jun 9th 2009 3:57PM
@ Shannon:
Green Day never has been and never will be Punk, but they revel in identifying themselves as such.
@ gib:
It got cool to hate on Green Day the minute they started believing that people gave a shit about what they think. All of their songs now have some shitty political undertone and it's pathetic. Not to mention that for a trio of guys who seemingly don't care what anyone thinks about them, they've sure changed their image quite drastically. I mean, guyliner and skinny jeans? Really? If they're not trying to appeal to today's youth, I don't know what they're doing.
Shmil @ Jun 9th 2009 3:58PM
I stopped liking green day when they released an oasis album with their name on it
gib @ Jun 9th 2009 4:41PM
@stevan
"It got cool to hate on Green Day the minute they started believing that people gave a shit about what they think. All of their songs now have some shitty political undertone and it's pathetic."
Really? That's your case??? The same thing could have been argued about the Beatles after Revolver, or Bob Dylan after Highway 61 Revisited, or a dozen other music artists... That is arguable that is when The Beatles, or Bob Dylan, or even Green Day started making their best music; when there was something to be said.
stevan @ Jun 9th 2009 6:01PM
@ gib:
I love that you left out the rest of my comment. If they actually believe in the crap they're spewing and calling music, that's their thing. There's no croime against voicing your "opinion". However, my main issue is their sudden change in image. There was absolutely no need for them to start wear tight pants and make-up. And I challenge anyone to give me a justifiable reason as to why 3 grown men who are now creeping up on 40 should be dressing like they're in high school.
Also, in response to your point (and I KNOW I'm going to get voted down for this), the Beatles were always sheep. Yes, they were good at what they did, but they never did anything first. I'm not denouncing their talent, but when you look at it, they never actually did anything...original. They simply copied what was popular at the time and went with it. Anyway, let the flaming commence.
gib @ Jun 9th 2009 6:36PM
@ stevan
I left it out because I didn't think it mattered to anyone but you, but here goes... Green Day has always tried to dress like punks from Berkley. First, it was the bleached hair and ratty jeans. Then, t-shirts and wallet chains. Then thin ties and black hair. Now, skinny jeans and eyeliner... Do I like their current style? No. Do I think they are trying to change their image to fit the times? Sure, but let me ask you this... Are you still wearing the same style you wore in 1990? I hope not.
As far as your ignorance concerning the Beatles, I'll just lower my head and feel sad for you.
Dragod @ Jun 9th 2009 11:19PM
Wow, stevan. You're totally right; there's no reason should ever change their style. EVER. I still dress in red overalls with a blue boat on the front, and I plan to dress that way until the day I die!
MystileArmor @ Jun 9th 2009 9:36AM
"Yeah, we're doing a whole Green Day Rock Band, uh ... shitty something"
I finished the sentence for him.
Muhammad-Oli @ Jun 9th 2009 9:37AM
Hahaha good call. Green Gay more like!
John Datserakis @ Jun 9th 2009 9:50AM
indeed!
Alex @ Jun 9th 2009 10:40AM
Ooohh you went there!
charlie b. @ Jun 9th 2009 11:17AM
@Muhammad-Oli: wow. you're real clever. you must be proud of yourself.
MrSpaceCowboy @ Jun 9th 2009 9:37AM
May I say it's about time.
inb4 someone says Green Day sucks or is over-rated.
MystileArmor @ Jun 9th 2009 9:45AM
I mean, yeah music is a subjective thing. Taste differs and all. But come on, they've been churning out the same garbage for like 10 years now.
I listened to Dookie when it first came out, I liked it. But I was still developing a taste in music, and had relatively little to compare it with.
For me, it didn't stand the test of time. I discovered music that was better, more heart and soul put into it. Music that was more "real", atleast to me.
If you like Green Day, I mean, that's cool and all, but I find it hard to believe these people do this cause they love the music. And the way I look at it, they're just not very good.
Just my 2 cents though.
MrSpaceCowboy @ Jun 9th 2009 9:49AM
Yeah, some of their songs are good, but I'm no die hard fan. If it came down to it, I'd probably pick and choose stuff rather than buy it all.
However, it's always nice to see new content.
Also, I think it's terrible when bands suffer from sounding the same constantly. (See Blink 182)
uncle jesse @ Jun 9th 2009 9:52AM
Agreed, Cowboy.
I could use some Green Day in the mix. Whether people want to bash them or not, they are an extremely popular band. I say, the more content the better. You might not like Green Day, but that doesn't mean everyone else does too. That goes for pretty much every band in RB.
MystileArmor @ Jun 9th 2009 9:54AM
Well, I got more respect for Blink 182 then Green Day. They seemed to do it cause they had love for it, and when they didn't they pulled the plug on it.
Towards the end they started experimenting more (Travis using drumloops, samples and the band getting DJ Shadow to do remixes of singles).
Also, Blink 182 never pretended to be more then they were. They were funny, that was it. They knew they weren't very good musicians, singers or songwriters (musicianship of Travis aside, offcourse).
Alex @ Jun 9th 2009 10:43AM
"Also, I think it's terrible when bands suffer from sounding the same constantly. (See Blink 182"
See also, any wand in the charts now whose name starts with 'The' and has a second word ending in the letter 's', to signify plural.
The Klaxons.
The Zutons.
The Kooks.
The Ramseys.
The Bronx. (Sounds like 's', thick people think it is.)
And so on.
NeoK-182 @ Jun 9th 2009 10:45AM
very true about blink. i'm a huge blink fan and i can say that after dude ranch each album had a different feel to it and different sound. especially the last one that was nothing like anything they had done before. and the new album is said to basically be a combo of the last one and take off your pants and jacket. should be good stuff.
And luckily were getting Whats My Age Again for rock band over the next week or so yayness.
As far as green day goes. theres like 4-5 songs that i would possible want, but no way in hell i'm buying a game. I do enjoy listening to them but everything sounds almost exactly the same so they're not getting more than 5 at the max from me.
MystileArmor @ Jun 9th 2009 10:46AM
I don't know about that dude. The Kooks are fuckin' fun as hell to listen to, and if you give the whole album a listen through, their stuff is fairly diverse.
MystileArmor @ Jun 9th 2009 10:48AM
Oh and also "The" bands have been around since forever...
The Beatles
The Beach Boys
The Zombies
The Kinks
The Rolling Stones
Did they all suck?
Alex @ Jun 9th 2009 10:59AM
MystileArmour, I said in the charts now.
MystileArmor @ Jun 9th 2009 11:17AM
Oh ok.. my bad. It's still early. lol
Oh and downvoted and upvoted in the same thread? That's a first.
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 9th 2009 12:51PM
american idiot (the album, not the song) wasn't bad at all! it was a pretty decent rock opera. if you listen to the entire album at once and pay decent attention to the lyrics, you'll see what i mean. in terms of standalone songs, there are only a few off that album. holiday, jesus of suburbia, and st. jimmy are really the only ones that can stand alone off that album.
james @ Jun 9th 2009 9:43AM
hell yes cant wait for green day i love there songs :)
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jun 9th 2009 9:43AM
As long as old material is included, I'm fine with that. I'm not a huge fan of American Idiot, though, and the newest album really did not strike me as incredible.
Shagittarius @ Jun 9th 2009 11:23AM
Give me 1039 smoothed out, or Kerplunk, and hell i'd even love dookie. Anything beyond that though, I'm sorry to say I'm not interested in. I still have much respect for the band though, I don't know where all these haters get off hatin on em.
Antagonist @ Jun 9th 2009 9:46AM
They don't need to do a whole Green Day Rock Band. If they just release one Green Day song, we can just get that and play it over and over again. That would be the same thing as listening to their entire catalog of music, would it not?
Muhammad-Oli @ Jun 9th 2009 9:59AM
Haha hell yes. I swear they could have released that new single on their previous album and nobody would have noticed. The message even seems to be the same as their previous album. (something about rebelling and war or some load of crap)
gib @ Jun 9th 2009 4:52PM
@Antagonist
Same could be said for any metal band, any scream-o band, etc.
Drew @ Jun 9th 2009 5:03PM
So, is it that they changed their focus, or is it that all the songs sound the same? I'm trying to be cool and hate popular stuff too, but I can't figure which I should be ass-hurt about.
Viridium @ Jun 9th 2009 9:51AM
Hate all you want, I'm buying whatever this is the instant it is possible for me to do so. Respect to MystileArmor for stating that music's subjective - nobody's forcing anyone to buy this. I've been a lifelong fan, although I must admit that I've been disappointed with their latest after the magnum opus that was American Idiot.
jorojoserojas @ Jun 9th 2009 10:02AM
Y'know, I guess I was too - but then, how do you follow up "American Idiot"? I still loved "21st Century Breakdown", if only for the story line.
Jordan @ Jun 9th 2009 9:56AM
Fingers crossed for some Foxboro Hot Tubs stuff...
Plankfan @ Jun 9th 2009 10:10AM
Oh yeah!!
MLS @ Jun 9th 2009 10:16AM
That would be great. I wonder if they'll add any Lookout era stuff (Welcome To Paradise doesn't count).
jorojoserojas @ Jun 9th 2009 10:00AM
I may be in the minority, but I think Green Day is better now than ever. "American Idiot" is straight up my favorite album of all time, and "21st Century Breakdown" is one of the better albums I've heard released in the last two years. The stories in both albums is great, and though much of the "punk" sound (if you'd ever call their sound punk, I mean) is gone, I can't deny how much they've grown as musicians.
But, to each their own. Also, I love when people here talk about music - someone inevitably leads me to listen to something I've never listened to before. ^_^
Jason Statham (Aka Vegeta) @ Jun 9th 2009 10:06AM
Really? American Idiot? Don't get me wrong American Idiot wasn't bad at all, and I really did enjoy the premise of the album. It's just that besides the Rock Operas(which were admittedly awesome) the rest of the album was pretty average.
However I recently listened to 21st Century Breakdown was pretty mediocre.
MystileArmor @ Jun 9th 2009 10:08AM
Well here ya go:
The Verve
Richard Ashcroft
The Arctic Monkeys
The Last Shadow Puppets
The Stone Roses
Ian Brown
That should set you straight for a couple of decades.
baby sea tuna @ Jun 9th 2009 10:21AM
...unless you like American music.
