that's what i'm saying. i was really impressed with the demo they showed at E3. the physics look great, the graphics are great, the customizaiton is robust, and best of all, it looks really fun to play. i bought LBP but i honestly haven't had a whole lot of fun with it as the platforming doesn't really feel all that great to me compared to old school platformers but i did love the Play, Create, Share aspect of it. seems like they are expanding that idea and bringing it to kart racing so i can't wait. poised to be another great franchise IMO.

AlexIV- Thanks for bringing that up. For all saying that ModNation Racers is an "answer to Mario Kart" it is not. This is Sony's continuing effort to build around the Play, Create, Share slogan by giving players control over level design.

Sony has had some terrific kart games (much better than all the Mario Kart games that came after the Super NES original) since the late 90's including Crash Team Racing ( developed by Naughty Dog) and Speed Punks ( by SCEA) which was terrific as well. The former also continued on the PS2 with Universal Interactive at the helm.

Find a used copy and play those games. You won't be dissapointed.

I'm guessing this is supposed to be sony's answer to Nintendo's Mario Kart?

Doesn't look half bad. The characters (at least the ones in the pics) look retarded but the karts/rides themselves look cool/fun.

I'm hoping MS gets/develops something like this. Burnout/Need for Speed and the like are fun and cool in their own right but sometimes I like the ridiculous crazy fun of games like Mario Kart....I mean you really can't beat projectile shells or lighting....

i was also thinking that this is sony's answer to mario kart. as for the way the characters look, that's something you're going to have to get used to, because that's not just a coincidence- it's the style.

Well, you can make your own custom racers, so hopefully you can make some than the fugly standard ones. Yeah, this is Sony's answer to Mariokart, you even get a boost when you drift.

Has noone played Crash Team Racing for the PS? That was the only clone of Mario Kart that was actually better than Mario Kart. Hopefully with User Generated Content this will be even more fun than CTR was :)

@el serpiente

Joyride says hello.

It doesn't have a track editor (yet) and isn't weapon based, but it apparantly plays really well, and has a large focus on customisation. Can't say I really have much interest in either game though.

"sony's answer to Nintendo's Mario Kart?"

I sure hope not, because just about everyone knows the only special thing about Mario Kart is the first word of that title. Take all the famous Mario characters out and all of a sudden no one would care about it.

Also, weren't you banned on that account? Or did you shift a letter around that I didn't notice?

@tmac

Did it always have two Zs in Azzalle?

Also, I like some of the weapons and tracks in Mario Kart. I think the rainbow and ghost tracks and some of the "classic" tracks stand out. The "slip on a banana peel" weapon is cartoonish and fun, but the bullet that shoots you into the lead is... kinda cheap.

You're right about the characters though, I think they are only truly notable for their other games. It's like the WoW "MTN DEW" Game Fuel stuff. Slap something famous on it and more people will buy it.

I wouldn't say it's their answer to mario kart so much as it's just expanding the genre Little Big Planet created. They are going for a super customizable uber cute racing game in the same vein of LBP. I do think this going to be a huge hit but I don't think they thought of making it a mario kart clone.

This game should just be "LittleBigRacers" and have Sackboy characters racing cars. And then have the ability to import Sackboys into the game

I completely agree. It's the same thing they should have done with the EyePet thing, Sony has one of the most adorable characters around and they need to market the shit out of him. If they make Sackboy DLC for this game I will definitely buy it.

games like this is why i voted for Sony as E3 Best in Show... but i wonder why it has gotten little to no attention. Everyone is bickering about who has the best waggle controls and what sequels will be better then who's.

Sony is at least trying in the Original IP department

All the level editing is pointless if the game isn't fun. The words "very similar to every kart racer you've ever played" in a hands-on is worrisome.

Exactly. Thats what worries me. I'm hoping its not another LBP where the editing is amazing but at the end of the day, the gameplay per say, isn't all that exciting.

Although looking like an exact copy of Zero Gears on PC http://myzerogear.com/ this does look pretty cool. Hopefully it can bring some tense racing situations that haven't been around, at least for me, since Burnout Paradise, Downhill Domination, or Hot Pursuit 2

The tech is undoubtedly impressive, but I'll be honest, I'm sick of kart racers, and this is coming from someone who loved Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing. Half of the appeal of kart racers are the familiar characters, levels and weapons, and this is just, well, generic. Which is fine I guess, though I think a lot more people would automatically be more drawn to it if they used the Sackboy characters in the game, like someone mentioned above.

Exactly. I read the Joystiq announcement for it and thought it seemed alright, but not for me. After seeing the actual footage of it from E3 and how much they could do with it, I was blown away.

Now, are they going to have more stylish weapons than just simple missles? Are they going to allow users to create custom weapons by editing things like range, speed, flying/grounded, damage, etc.? I know this could be unfair for online races, but I'd love to see little machine gun cars, people dropping orange safety cones, rear-deployed oil slick, and even a sheep bomb (as a tribute to Worms).

"Unlike with LittleBigPlanet -- despite them making similar claims -- the level designers for ModNation Racers use the in-game track designer to create all the levels in the game."

Who ever said that the LittleBigPlanet story mode levels were not made in Create Mode? Show me a story mode level that can't be remade in Create Mode and I'll show you a liar.

This is probably more exciting than LBP. Funnily enough this and Rockstar's new game seemed to be totally overlooked even though both seemed like absolutely stellar additions to Sony's lineup and possibly the biggest new games announced this E3 .

It pretty much went like, "Rockstar has a new game in the pipes, it's too early to show anything, and there's always the chance it might get canceled down the line, but it's in the works! Oh, and it's good, just take my word for it!"

Rockstar making an exclusive PS3 game that's to be as big as GTA is definitely news, but I agree with Ashkental, they ruined the reveal by not having anything other than a name to show off.

Point taken, but its still a new IP from one of the best developers in the world. A lot of people were excited about Uncharted 2 or Trico well before the trailers arrived. Arent you looking forward to GTA5 or MGS5, even if you havent seen gameplay? And dont forget there were hardly any new, surprise titles announced - other than these 2, FF14 and maybe 2-3 others.

I've been hoping for a good, fun, Karting game along the lines of Mario Kart for a long time, but everything else just seems to be overkill and trying too hard to be more challenging or something.
When this popped up during the conference it was pretty clear early on it seemed to be on the right tracks, figured it'd be a cool PSN game priced like Wipeout. Then the track editor just blew me away. Im not convinced its worth a full retail price, but at the same time I suspect over time it'll prove itself and be full priced.

Its also really refreshing to give the user such powerful tools which dont take hours of work and dedication to create something that your and many others could get a lot of enjoyment from.

Lastly, wouldnt it be amazing to see the same sort of creation technology used to generate more realistic looking tracks for something like the GT series, rather than a cartoon look. I'd love to see it go down this route, with a respectable series rather than something NFS arcadey.
