Could be. This does take place like a month or more after the battle of Reach,if I remember correctly.

SPOILERZ AHEAD ABOUT TEH REACH

Reach was basically where the spartans/UNSC got their asses handed to them at their 2nd heaviestly defended planet (with number 1 being Earth) They took out a lot of covenant during the fight because of all the Spartan II's and orbital cannons that they had, but in the end it was nearly a complete loss. Most of the remaining spartans got wiped out. It was a big deal, so "Remember Reach" is like "Remember the Alamo" or "Remember Pearl Harbor."

@R

So...does that mean that the new Halo Reach game will basically be Empire Strikes Back? If so, AWESOME.

Could be. Reach was where the Spartan II's first used their shielded armor if I remember correctly. Master Chief was in space protecting the orbital cannons(possible zero-g combat?), and the other spartans were on the planet protecting power generators. Captain Keyes and the Pilalr of Autumn were there too. (Thats actually where the Pillar of Autumn had just jumped from at the start of halo 1, hence why it was all torn up.)

it could be what you suggested Rohan, but in the Halo fiction, Reach was a big thing. It wasn't some nowhere military base that nobody ever heard of, it was a big thing. It was the heaviest defended colony in UNSC territory, second only to Earth. Not only that but it was the UNSC had headquarters there for FLEETCOM, SATCOM, ONI, not main headquarters mind you, but it was hugely important as it was also one of the largest shipbuilding facilities, and had the highest population of any colony

Its pretty much a handoff of money from me to them on this game. I have to admit I look forward to the books now as much as the games. I love the world they have created for this IP. This game will add to the backstory. Thats a plus in my book.

Your scarb-sized picture is off by a few dozen feet.

But yeah, this is starting to look sweet. Pretty glad that they took out duel wielding as A., it doesnt make sense that marines can duel wield, and B., gives it more of a classic Halo 1 feel.

In before "But Keyes daughter can duel wield."

Yes, she can, and she's dead now. ARE YOU HAPPY?

I thought firefight would be on the first disc and not the second. Seems like a strange choice (since its odst based)

It is. Joystiq got it wrong. It goes like this.

ODST Disc: ODST Campaign, Firefight, Theatre Mode, Extras

Theatre mode is obviously for saved films of campaign / firefight. The extras menu is apparently for the Halo Reach beta (when released) along with downloadable behind the scenes videos and stuff.

Multiplayer Disc: Halo 3 Multiplayer and all it's features + 3 new maps

Oh and also, you CAN install ODST. It's been optimised for HDD install now too. You still can't install the Multiplayer disc however.

I think you still *can* install the multiplayer disc, but Bungie doesn't recommend it and it will make loading times longer for you (and anyone playing with you).

Could you point me to a place that says what exactly is on each disc? The way they explained the discs in the demo gave me the impression I wrote above. Would appreciate it! Sorry if there is, in fact, a mistake.

Here Ben from last Friday's Weekly Update,

Q. What's up with the two discs for Halo 3: ODST? I'm confused. Explain how the two discs work, please.

A. ‘Kay. There are two discs packed in with Halo 3: ODST. Basically, disc one is for cooperative play while disc two is for competitive multiplayer. To make this a touch easier, let's just refer to Halo 3: ODST as ODST in the next section. When we say "Halo 3," we're referring to Halo 3 you have in your Xbox 360 today.

The primary disc contains ODST's Campaign and Firefight modes. If you have friends who also have ODST, you'll be able to play these modes together.

The second disc is Halo 3’s traditional multiplayer. You can use this disc to play the multiplayer that you're experiencing via Halo 3 right now. Plus, we're throwing in three more maps, Heretic, Citadel, and Longshore. Players who have Halo 3 or ODST, can play Halo 3's traditional multiplayer together.

What you can’t do is play ODST’s Campaign and Firefight modes with players who don’t have ODST. Vice versa, ODST players cannot jump into Halo 3's original Campaign modes.

Got it? Good. If not, check out the Halo 3: ODST Project Page linked above for more information.

I really Really want this bad. plus if you pre-order at gamstop (maybe other places im not entirely sure) you unlock sgt. johnson to play as in firefight mode. that would be cool i think to play as him, and et to customize armor and stuff.

Not just Gamestop; it will be at other retailers who offer pre-orders.

On another note, I like that Best Buy preorders often include the green case. It comes in handy for when you break a case or want to package a Limited Edition game disc in one of those double wide cases or big cases (Halo Wars, for example) and it's still in a game brand case. A bit anal, yes, but it keeps the look of my game rack clean.

Wayne, if you go into BB and get a pre-order then you bring a game case to the counter to pay for it and they throw it in the bag. Its a regular green 360 game case for the game you preordered. So, later if you need a case for a game cause one broke or something, you would have a spare case that matches all the other ones as opposed to being black or something.

Anybody know how the multiplayer disc will work? Will we be able to install maps to the hard drive so they can be used with the original Halo 3 disc, or will the ODST multiplayer disc render the multiplayer portions of the original Halo 3 discs obsolete?

I think you'll probably be able to move all the maps from the map packs (and the extra three from the ODST disc) to the hard drive so that you can use Halo 3 as well. Halo 3 does include achievements for the ODST maps, so one can only assume that that's how they will do that.

I'm assuming that the second disc will register as Halo 3 when it comes to the achievements so you don't have to switch around discs to get them.

There will be destructible environments to an extent, but the bridge blowing up looks like it's scripted, not nearly the level of particle effects that would be there if it were dynamic.

Bit early for such hope, isnt it Wayne? I mean we dont even know what type of game it is yet. I can see it now...

Experience the epic feeling as you play Captain Keyes! Pilot the Pillar of Autumn in combat against the Covenant army! Use your special move "the Keyes Loop" to turn their fleet in to scrap!

Not likely, but it could be o.o.

I know I know, itll probably never happen. But after games like RSV2 and Quantum of Solace it just feels unnatural not to be able to take cover, especially considering we're playing as elite supersoldiers who have been trained in war since they were six and have numerable biological and technological enhancements, it just doesnt make sense for them to run in jumping up and down soaking up bullets

Well, yeah, cover based shooters can be fun, and they are more realistic. The problem is cover based games are balanced around you being in cover for most of the fight, which I dont necessarily want to constantly be doing. I WANT to play a game where i can just "run and gun" at times, and in this post-gears of war world where most shooters are balanced around you being in cover for 95% of combat, its getting harder and harder to find.

Halo and Unreal tourny are my last refuges.

Just because you can't stick to cover doesn't mean you can't take cover. I mean, if there's a wall there you can still stand behind it and pop in and out of it and take shots. Same thing with a ledge and crouching. Am I the only one who does that kind of stuff all the time in games that don't officially have "cover systems"?

that makes sense, but I wish they would do both, certainly running and gunning makes sense since they have much higher speed and strength than an average person as well as shields and armor, but then cover makes sense because they aren't invincible

I like run and gun games too, it's just a lot of games without cover systems still make you need cover, like FEAR 2, you could interact with tables and stuff to hide behind, but you just had to crouch, and it was never a real comfortable experience especially with aiming, same thing with CoD, especially on fucking veteran

Honestly I haven't been interested in Halo since the first game brought FPS internet-enabled multiplayer to consoles with force, but this looks very interesting. Halo has had a good universe built around it and its nice to see devs trying to take it in different directions. I'll definitely be watching this one!
