Now you can see why our preview of Just Cause 2 was so glowing ... it has 62% more chutes! Yes, it looks this good. Lead game designer Peter Johansson from Avalanche Studios takes us through the game with his sexy accent, and base jumping / parachuting alone looks like a hell of a lot of fun. Seriously, why has no one developed a skydiving game? (Mention Go! Sports Skydiving and we'll hurt you.)
Watch the entire video above (it's long) and you'll see why Spider-Man has nothing on Rico. After all, he didn't carry a gun. The original Just Cause was a slightly buggy mess that was caught up in the changeover from the Xbox to the Xbox 360, although it featured some enjoyable and innovative gameplay. This sequel looks much, much better and we'll be keeping our eyes open for more info before it comes out in 2010.

wow, this isn't even the first time today some idiot has complained about realism. It's not SUPPOSED to be realistic! neither is super mario brothers, or the legend of zelda, or any of the other top rated games of all times.
know why? because people don't play games for reality. they have reality for that.

Since when are you supposed to take games seriously? I always thought we played them for fun.

I can see the potential, but it looks kind of... cheesy.
Its very over the top and doesn't pretend to be grounded in reality, but I don't know how much fun can really be had with this, what with all the trees nearly identical, and not much variety there is, regardless of how good everything looks.
that's my 2 cents

Wait, did you just say the reason you can't have FUN is because the trees look the same?

Forget the tree comment, what isn't there to like about over the top action? If you want grounded in reality, stick with Flight Simulator X or Total War.

I actually agree with ahsayuninew here. The over the top action looks lame. The base jumping is cool, but there seems to be a little too much grappling/parachuting everywhere for me to take this game seriously. Also, to completely change the subject, does anyone else out there think that (in sandbox games) making transportation really quick and easy diminishes the scope of it?

I was actually a fan of the first game, and this one looks much better so I know I'll be getting this one too. You can't beat parachuting out of a car and grappling onto a heli

I don't know why, but there is nothing quite as satisfying as hijacking a helicopter, taking it to the maximum allowed altitude, and just jumping out to free fall all the way down to the earth. Takes at least a minute before you hit ground. I LOVED Just Cause. Over the top action at it's very best.
I really hope this game loses all those nasty bugs and glitches found in the original though.

The only thing they need to improve from the first game past what's in the above video is the vehicle handling. Being able to drive huge amounts of vehicles is great and all, but not if they all suck.
If they do not, I'm simply not interested. Not with the huge amount of driving/flying/riding/boating you have to do in these games.

the first was fun- and I really enjoyed the base jumping sequences... number two is looking to be just as fun as the first, but with some polish that should make it a great game.

My heart stopped for a sec when he jumped off. I vaguely remember playing the demo for the first Just Cause so I'm definetely going to give it a try once more and see if I can find a copy at Gamestop.
In unrelated news, I bought Shadow of the Colossus today. I know i'm late to the party. :D

Holy shit! He juggled the guy in the air with his bullets, attached another poor soul to a tank that dragged him across the ground, and they just invented car surfing. What's next? Jet surfing? ....!

You can ride on top of a car in a ton of other games, whether you're supposed to or not. I think Saint's Row 2 is the only one that actually referred to it as "car surfing."

Didn't see any of it in this video, but I hope they didn't take out the option to target and shoot thrown grenades. That little touch made the repetitive combat scenarios so much more enjoyable.

I cannot believe you just called a game where you can tether a motherfucking car to a motherfucking helicopter while grappling a barrel on the the car you just tether to the helicopter shit.
Exploding Wrecking ball? Check
Rocket launcher shooting WHILE IN PARACHUTE MODE? Check
EPIC ENTRANCES USING THE GRAPPLING HOOK? HELL YEAH THAT'S A CHECK!
EVEN USING A GRAPPLING HOOK IN AN EPIC WAY!? "Mind Asplode"
Imagine the possibillities of using that hook and weapons! Not only that, while he did say double tether, could we possibly tether other objects onto that double tether and create a makeshift katamari to a car or Choppa?
If that is so, my Harpoon gun to the car days are over(Read: Crackdown)
This, next to Brutal Legend, just made my Motherfucking day!

Does look like a cool game, I just hope they can tweak the physics to give more weight to the characters and objects. I don't mind that he can open his parachute at levels too low to be realistic, but the way he lands on the boat... he's going too fast, he should have some mass that at least makes him stumble as he lands or has to take a couple steps to slow down.
Also, the AI at times seemed to be really stupid, but again it's still awhile before this game comes out so that will likely be improved. Definitely a lot of promise, overall.

the AI is one of the areas I don't expect to improve much.. the AI in the first game was a joke. it was more of a sandbox slaughterfest.
however- they had god-mode on for the demo, so the AI didn't really have too much to react to. half the time he was standing out in the open, and an AI's best move is going to be fire from cover. They did flank him when he ran out of sight though, so that was a good sign. To see AI in the best of light you have to be playing it as intended (for survival)

the problem with the first game was not graphics, it looked great too, but it suffered from really really bad gameplay and missions. The missions were mostly BULLSHIT and the gameplay felt like it was only half finished. Too many bugs and shit. I hope this game's got that fixed. If you've actually played the first one for a long time, you'd realize what a pain it was.
The important thing is not graphics, its gameplay. I hope this sequel plays as good as it looks.

I know I'm going to get downvoted for this but..
how is that parachute and grappling hook supposed to feel special when you're using each ever 10 seconds?
It looks like there's some fun to be had, but playing the game in that style looks to me like would settle into, dare I say, repetition.
See a base you need to kill? Grapple, chute, grapple, chute, grapple, chute, done. See a military road block? Grapple, chute, grapple, chute, grapple, done.
That's the impression I get.
But yeah, counting on the seconds till I'm downvoted to crap.

A game mechanic doesn't have to be "special" or something you do rarely for it to be fun. Jumping in Mario is fun, shooting in Call of Duty is fun, drifting in OutRun 2 is fun... If anything I think it's a good sign if the gameplay fundamentals are intrinsically fun. Having said that the game could still end up being repetitive and not so fun in the long run, but if the parachute/stunt/grappling mechanics are as fun as they look, I definitely think it's a plus, and not a strike against the game.
