"I'd love to live in a world with fewer leaks and more meat," said SCEA's head of hardware marketing, John Koller, to Ars Technica on the circulating murmurs of a PS3 slim model. Koller admits Sony has had "a certain amount of frustration" with rumors that a slim-lined PS3 will hit retailers in the fall and he thinks it's more important to focus on the certainty of the present than the possibilities of the future.
Koller calls it a matter of what "may or may not happen," which is interesting, since he's not flat out denying it nor is he outright laying down the "does not comment on rumor/speculations" angle. Could it be that the slim model is real, though now with the beans spilled, Sony will postpone its release plans? Surmountable evidence suggests that it is, and even Koller's wording in the interview (read: use of "leak," not "rumor") fuels this thought.

he wants more meat with fewer leaks? That doesn't sound right.

It's not like E3 was the last major game show of the year.
Hint: There's one a few months before Christmas.

That Slim PS3 is like a fat chick that got liposuction.
Sure its slimmer, but it doesn't look all that better.
I hope it can perform better now that its slimmer.

I don't know. While the ps3 is huge, I think its the best looking console out of the 3. Maybe I'm just one of those losers who like shiny things =p

Perhaps they took out the slim announcement for E3 and put in the motion control stuff instead, switching them both around for Tokyo

Smart thinking. The motion controller presentation was absolutely a last minute job - if not the technology itself.

I play my slim PS2 less than my 360, Wii, and DS combined, but I still love the damn thing. Easy to tote around for DVD use among other things. I even brought the thing back to MN for the last xmas holidays since I wanted something to game on. Still has such a money catalog of games. Had they not updated/changed the design I doubt I'd have a PS2 right now. Those big old units were junk :( My old roomie's drive broke, and both my older brothers had units that ruined and scratched games constantly.

I haven't seen anyone point out the major inconsistency between the leaked box and sony marketing. The PS3 brand (at the bottom) is not the same as the new PS3 brand that comes at the end of all the trailers for upcoming exclusive games.

but somehow this got out before the psp go. and some how they have the exact same font. i think its true. the slim is going to be great. it will only give me more reason to buy 2 more and 2 more tv's for some sexy 3 screen real cockpit GT5 when it comes out.

The more frustrating thing is he's bitching about the rumors, but doesn't say whether the Slim is a Chinese rip-off.
Yes, I know that was pretty much the point of the article.

I dont like that so much stuff is being leaked, a lot of it just hurts the industry, take a ps3 price cut, or any price cut for example, pple will simply not buy their product till the price is dropped if it is leaked.. where does that put us? with a product that cant be properly supported by its creator. i mean realy, how much money would you put into a product that just wont sell?

I'd say the bigger problem for Sony could be that if people wait it out because of this rumor (one of the few that might turn out to be true) and it does turn out to be true and they "win" because of waiting, then the next time a false rumor comes around they might wait and wait and wait and Sony will lose out a lot. If the PSlim3 (ha!, not hating, just funny) does come out this fall, Sony doesn't stand to lose much since this isn't a hot buying season anyway, but they could stand to lose a lot more from a differently-timed rumor.

My first thoughts is that that was a mock-up model as its not shiney and doesnt have the proper font.

It's obviously going to happen, the slim PS2 was a huge success. It's just a matter of when. Sony doesn't want these rumors to prevent people from buying a console that does exist waiting for one that may or may not exist in the new future. Frankly, I can't blame them. Though really, if they want to sell more PS3's - all they have to do is drop the price, it will help more than a slim model. Though I expect it could go over well as a home theater piece in a smaller form.

I pulled the same things away from the interview. Dills sounds very much frustrated at the fact that real information was leaked, especially after what happened with the PSP go. Jack Tretton joked about it at the conference, but he was probably upset over it. The fact alone that Dille calls PS3 slim rumors frustrating, and does not call them false at the same time, raises an eyebrow, or a !

If the PS3 slim doesn't exist and people are putting off their PS3 purchases for no reason, that would be pretty frustrating too.
I don't know which would be worse.

Here's the real reason they are doing this. Sony will NOT drop the price point of the Playstation 3 like analysts and wall street has speculated. Instead of dropping the price, they will come out with this new version and charge just as much as they always have.
Now, to clear back inventory, they will discount what is currently out there for maybe 50 bucks, MAYBE 50 bucks. Why do I say this? Does no one remember when they were clearing out stock when the current 80's came out? or when they switched from the 20/60 to the old style 40/80's?
Its so they can claim price drops, but keep the price the same year round.

But this isn't simply removing some USB ports and increasing HDD size, it's a whole new model of the PS3. I'm sure the older models would get a $100 cut if it happens.
