Xbox Live down for server maintenance June 16
Start stocking up on canned foods and survival gear, folks. One week from today, the Xbox Live service will be going down for server maintenance. According to Major Nelson's most recent blog post, Microsoft is flipping the "off" switch at 12:01 a.m. on June 16, and is expected to keep things offline for "up to 24 hours." Yes, for an entire day, the vile hatred and foul-mouthedness that consumes the online gaming universe will be freed from its fiberglass prison and released into the physical world. We humbly suggest staying indoors.

Will this be the fourth or fifth maintenance that will make it so they won't have to shut live down to do maintenance?
Cody @ Jun 9th 2009 7:49PM
"Start stocking up on canned foods and survival gear, folks"
Xbox Live users probably would too.
MRLN @ Jun 9th 2009 7:50PM
I can just imagine the streets filled with so many F-bombs, people will think it's World War III.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jun 9th 2009 8:09PM
War has changed...
;p
F1: Basu Gasu Bakuhatsu @ Jun 9th 2009 8:25PM
No war, war never changes.
TravisO @ Jun 10th 2009 10:42AM
I just started playing Fallout 3 a couple days ago, after putting down Left 4 Dead which I've been playing almost nonstop since it came out.
So this maintenance won't affect me at all since I only play offline lately.
Alex @ Jun 10th 2009 3:20PM
War changes.
Weapons change.
Soldiers don't.
Where is that from? I can't remember... I'm assuming it's from CoD or MGS...
Rhamsey @ Jun 9th 2009 7:51PM
I personally will be serving in jury duty, then heading to see walking with dinosaurs at night with my little brother and his friends (6-7 year olds). If xbox live is not on when I get home, I will cry.
HSOL @ Jun 9th 2009 7:55PM
MS should reimburse all gold member 14 cents. (yes i used a calculator)
Xvnine @ Jun 9th 2009 7:57PM
Flip it and multiply it by the amount of gold members, tell me!
kftgr @ Jun 9th 2009 9:07PM
Easier to extend Gold status by 3 days than re-pay 14 cents.
Processing fees for such a miniscule amount would be ridiculous, plus, a reparation of 3 days for 1 day downtime makes for good will, yet shouldn't cost Microsoft 14 cents. That's a win-win for everyone.

Ordeith @ Jun 10th 2009 1:23AM

Spartan @ Jun 10th 2009 7:18AM

Water @ Jun 10th 2009 8:39AM

Xvnine @ Jun 9th 2009 7:57PM
So what's getting updated?
Nebenator @ Jun 9th 2009 8:00PM
Maintenance is a form of updating
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 9th 2009 8:01PM
Maybe preparing the system for the full game download option, but that's not until August so....I have no idea.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 9th 2009 7:58PM
You mean people will be forced to play single player games....for an entire day? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS MICROSOFT???
BigFat @ Jun 9th 2009 8:03PM
now that i think about it, that be a good time to beat Prince of persia, games got some good writing.
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 9th 2009 8:06PM
Could just be "we arent adding anything" maintaince, or it could be prep.
Servers need "cleaning" so to speak, replacing, repairing, etc, etc. Doesnt have to be something new.
Mazrael @ Jun 9th 2009 8:33PM
I play single player games anyway.. no loss to me.. I just like being connected to Live.. I very occassionly play online
JXCgunrunna @ Jun 9th 2009 10:17PM
I know this is another crazy idea but maybe local Multiplayer? like with friends and family like we all did back in the good old days(for us wii owners we call that now-a-days)
megapenguinx @ Jun 10th 2009 12:07AM

Scott @ Jun 9th 2009 8:09PM
So much for playing Ghostbusters multiplayer co-op modes...
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 9th 2009 8:05PM
I have to go an entire evening without sacred 2 co op goodness?
Hopefully Star Ocean, Dead Space, and another Mass Effect play through will get me through the day.
P.S.
Dear tmacairjordan87,
Buy Mass Effect.
Sincerely,
-R-
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 9th 2009 8:14PM
oh, and Griffin, not to be an asshole, but...
You spelt "online" as "onlin" in the tags.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 9th 2009 8:28PM
Bought Mass Effect day 1 right after my 6th 360 came back just in time from the RRoD repair shop. Beat it a good 5 times or so but I'm going to rebuy it when Microsoft launches that full game thing providing it's not more expensive.
Easily in my top 5 favorite games this gen, and I can't wait for 2.
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 9th 2009 8:30PM
Hm. Then whos the one that always...ah, right, right, its Mr. Esc that wont buy it.
My bad.
BarryBee @ Jun 9th 2009 8:32PM
Not to be an asshole but you spelled 'spelled' "spelt".
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 9th 2009 8:42PM
Main Entry: spelt
Pronunciation:\ˈspelt\
chiefly British past and past participle of spell.
Spelt is a word. Possibly I used it wrong grammatically, but it is SPELT correctly.
And whereas my post will be forgotten in a day, those tags are important in finding past posts using the search engine.
Douchebag defeated! You gain 10 experience points!
ThatPCgameryouhate @ Jun 9th 2009 9:44PM
Oddly enough, there's another story with "onlin" in the tags.
CH3BURASHKA @ Jun 9th 2009 8:13PM
NO!1!!!!1!!!!!!!1111!1!
Vcize @ Jun 9th 2009 8:15PM
Oh thank the lord now maybe I can play through one of these SP games that I have backlogged so I don't feel like it's just money sitting on the shelf.
Or, more than likely I'll just finally get around to starting that 3rd playthrough of Mass Effect. Seeing all this ME2 goodness really makes me want to play it again.
Trippy Haps @ Jun 9th 2009 9:09PM
Damn you guys.
I was able to score a copy of Mass Effect on the cheap during the Circuit City closings, but won't allow myself to even unwrap it from the plastic until I clear out some of the other single-player games I've got going.
But at least once a day I continue to hear how awesome it is, and the temptation goes ever-stronger...
...I hate you all.
F1: Basu Gasu Bakuhatsu @ Jun 9th 2009 9:24PM
Ya Mass Effect is soooo great. Everyone should play it at least once.
Dan @ Jun 10th 2009 1:21PM
I don't care if this gets down-voted, but as an avid RPG fan, and a fan of Bioware, I thought Mass Effect was awful.
The environments were dull, the "exploration" was tedious, the combat was sloppy and repetitive, the menu systems were annoying, and the enemies were more and more of the same.
The dialog was well, fantastic, as was the sound, but otherwise that game was boring.
I had to drag myself through it to finish it.
KOTOR > Mass Effect
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 9th 2009 8:20PM
Well I could finish wolfenstein on dead incarnate or play in my other 2 consoles...Wolfenstein it is.
Austin @ Jun 9th 2009 8:24PM
What a great birthday present! Fuck!
Mazrael @ Jun 9th 2009 8:31PM
That would be a great birthday present...
Oh..!
SpaceFox @ Jun 9th 2009 8:36PM
Well, look at it this way. At least now you'll be forced to go out there and actually do something constructive on your birthday! =D
On the other hand it may be best to stay inside though....hm.....yeah either way you really are screwed.
SpaceFox @ Jun 9th 2009 8:35PM
Lol, well hurray for PSN I guess. =P
Been playing FFX so much lately though that if they shut down the PSN servers for 2 days I probably wouldn't even care, unless they did it the day BF1943 came out....
Misfit Toy @ Jun 9th 2009 9:07PM
Oh noes...I need to go outdoors...
Mouthsmasher @ Jun 9th 2009 9:08PM
In the past, how long have the server maintenances lasted? If this one is longer than usual, does that mean that we can expect something great to immediately come of it?
HSOL @ Jun 9th 2009 9:15PM
I was joking, but yeah, I'd much rather have 3 more days added than 14 cents lol.
