Seems like it's gonna suck being an Enforcer... hopefully they add a lot more to that side. Just sounds way better to be a Criminal right now.

I think being an enforcer is going to be pretty cool actually. So many people will want to be criminals that you will have plenty of opportunities to do justice. I'd love to create a Shaft or Riggs (from Lethal Weapon) character and just wail on criminals.

Plus, I think it'd be easier to get status as an enforcer. They'll be so many bad guys and so few enforces that if you're a good enough player as an enforcer, you'll quickly stand out.

Plus, I'm a prosecutor in real life. I can't work for the other side now, can I? I've been thinking my death song will be the distinctive chime at the beginning of Law & Order.

But you can't rob banks. Or kill both sides. Being a Criminal sounds so much more interesting. Seriously, hopefully they add some more Enforcer-exclusive stuff, because it sounds like pretty weak just taking out Criminals.

Well, you certainly probably can't rob banks, but I haven't seen anything that says you can't kill whomever you want as an enforcer. You might not get any points for it, or you might lose some prestige or something, but I don't see why your bullets wouldn't kill other cops just like they kill criminals. Also, maybe they'll make something where you can be a dirty cop and play both sides. That would be nice.

@Jomolungma
Better would be if it went both ways: enforcers could be 'dirty cops' and some of the criminals could be undercover enforcers... just think Infernal Affairs/The Departed. Would then in theory turn the total number of available classes from two to four. Thoughts?

Yeah, I was thinking a similar thing, that depending on how you play your character, you could really be "good" or "bad," regardless of what side you choose.

I thought maybe enforcers would have access to better equipment. Helicopters, armored vehicles, etc. etc....

Will there be console ports? Or a Linux or Mac client?

We’re just starting to evaluate opportunities for a console port but do not have anything to announce yet. There will not be a Linux or Mac client.

Is it me, or does this feel kinda like Sony's HOME, in a very strange way? I mean a whole lot better, but it boils down to Avatar dress up, self contained zones (of the city/cities) where you just kinda wander around (or in this case, shoot people)

Dont know, the game looks awesome, and some of the tech they've talked about is exciting (dynamic heat ratings / bounties based on what you are doing) but (like Home) it feels like it's missing something... like a story.

I guess I'd want this less to be a MMO and more to be a single play story/world driven experience, which can dynamically bring in real people when you get a star rating or are on a certain mission type (so you fight real flesh and blood enemies) and allow you to tackle missions with friends.

meh, my .047¢

A story would be nice, but based on what I've read and the interview Joystiq posted a couple of days ago, nothing prevents them from adding story-based objectives later on. There might not be an ultimate story that ties everything together, but you might have instanced stories that play out like episodes of a cop show. Ultimately, with their prestige and bounty system, they might be able to link a couple of stories together by using the same players (assuming they survive the first "episode").

It's a possibility. Not the strongest story-based gameplay, but it would add something. GTA IV multiplayer has no story, and it was fun for a while - you basically created your own stories - but it has died off considerably and I think it's because of the story factor. So hopefully RealTime will learn some lessons from watching that when the release APB.

This looks pretty wicked. Guns, cars, cops, criminals... It's like a giant communal playground. The lack of story and overarching missions is going to really hurt it though. People want their narrative. And if there's no solid reason to team up, it's going to degenerate into a ridiculous free-for-all.

But still. Crazy customization can indeed hold up a game on it's own. Almost reminds me of a more hardcore-friendly spore. I can see tons of memorable moments brewing in the game already, like two groups of criminals robbing the same bank at the same time and ending up in a big three-way firefight, or shooting someone in the middle of a car trick jump with a rocket launcher and the wa-wa-waaaaa "death tune" springing up. Can't wait.

This seems interesting, but, I really have to say...

I'd like it to be a little more MASSIVE and a little less GRAPHICS.

A living MMO city with cops and robbers and store fronts and car chases, etc, is very attractive.

Another FPS wearing the mask of an MMO, notsomuch... I dunno, I'll check it out for sure... like I have every other MMO on the Earth.

"Even if your graphics aren't astounding, like Braid"

Are you implying that all 2D games have graphics that don't astound? I was pretty blown away by that game' graphical style. Perhaps it should have been worded differently. "even if your graphics aren't cutting edge tech"

I know a lot of mainstream GTA fans wouldn't agree with me, but personally my favorite part of GTA is going through the story. I don't think something like APB is for me. Oh well.

No story? How is this appealing? I guess this is shaping up to be a mmo-type game. It should be obvious considering they want a subscription-based game. Are there going to be levels to obtain? Like the more crimes you commit/prevent the more leveling up? It sounds like they don't even know. That should be really concerning b/c the creators don't even know what they want. Red flag! If the developer isnt sure, why are they promoting this?

no thanks. I'll look elsewhere for my gaming.

If you play games for their stories, you must be a sad, bitter man. It's well known fact that 99% of all video game stories suck serious ass.

I think instanced events would go well for this game. They could be unscheduled, but they could say give people an objective for a 48 hour window to focus people's efforts if they so choose. Kind of like WAR's sieges, suddenly everyone could be fighting over one spot of land. Or they could say a certain VIP is in town and all the criminals are trying to kidnap him (which is supposed to happen), and then all the enforcers try to rescue him. That could spice things up.

Or they could let it play out like real life, where there isn't any overarching story save that created by the player's themselves in attempts to win money/power/respect.

I don't care about lack of story. If this game is as good as they say, you'll be making your own stories with your friends that will be more fun and hilarious than almost any video game writer could come up with.

The best thing this game can do is to NOT have an overarching story -- the MMO industry has enough games like that already, and frankly, the proliferation of said games has stagnated a once promising industry.

Personally, as an ex-WOW player, I'm tired of going through sterile, premade environments with nothing unique or organic to do. Preplanned content and stories can only last so long, and sooner or later, they will inevitably lose their luster.

On the other hand, in a game like APB or EVE (which I don't play for a number of reasons but appreciate the idea and execution), the players and what they choose to do are the story.

As history has shown, the human equation is one that can never be fully predicted, and in a game where players and their decisions drive the flow of the game, you can be sure that you won't tire of the game as long as the game itself is solidly designed -- in fact, a vibrant playerbase has been enough to keep many mediocre games alive when they should otherwise be dead -- and APB looks to be anything but mediocre.

If you enjoy an endless achievement treadmill in place of actual meaningful gameplay, WOW's always out there for you. If you prefer a tightly plotted, planned out story made for you to go through, SW:TOR's not too far off on the horizon (and I'm curious about it too).

WOW, WAR, LOTRO, and all the other "safe bet" MMOs aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and are always out there if you want them. Please, don't try and force something new and interesting like APB into the same old mold.
