Variety is reporting that "sources" reveal Cryptic is working on a Neverwinter Nights MMO for Atari to launch in 2011. Cryptic Studios is currently working on Champions Online and Star Trek Online, expected to launch this September and next March, respectively.
Considering that Neverwinter Nights -- developed by BioWare, with the sequel helmed by Obsidian -- was a mini-MMO to begin with, the idea of the series going totally online isn't a stretch. The only thing that's really a stretch is if Atari will be around to see it all come to pass.

Loved the player created persistant worlds of the first one, hard to see how a true MMO could match that experience seeing as they were player created and administrated, not to mention free.

Got to hand it to Atari for making a real comeback.

Uhm... Is it NWN1 or NWN2 based?
Because the graphics you use is from NWN1 - and that gives me hopes that they drop the NWN2 abomination.

How exactly can Cryptic be working on 3 MMOs at the same time? I understand that they're spaced out with releases over the next 3 years, but good franchise MMOs take an incredible amount of work to maintain and update. You don't see Blizzard launching 3 MMOs over the course of 3 years, they put their development time into improving the current MMO and maybe prepping a secret secondary MMO for sometime later. Cryptic is a far smaller studio than Blizzard or some of the current MMO developers from what I've read. Does that strike anyone else as somewhat odd that they would be spearheading 3 MMOs in 3 years?

Exactly what I was wondering. Three MMo's?? For that to work they'd need an army of developers which as far as I've heard they don't have.
"but good franchise MMOs take an incredible amount of work"
Keyword there is good, which I have my doubts any of these mmo's will be. If any Cryptic devs are reading this I'd love to hear how you plan to prove me wrong.

Well, maybe, just maybe, since one game is launching in Sept. they are almost done with the game and just doing polish. Star trek isn't out until next year (do you know how long they've been working on it, because I do) and if they are working on a new MMO, they will have 90% of the Champions Team available in a couple of months and 90% of the STO team available early next year. Doesn't sound too difficult to me to attain. Also, not all MMOs have to be the same scale as WoW. There can be smaller adventures and the genres for all these games are all different, meaning they can coexist in the same vertical.

Not every game needs to be turned into an MMO.

No. Just no. Enough with all the MMO's already.

Seriously, this MMO-bullshit needs to stop. I can only take so many of my favourite games being turned into online wankfests for 14-year olds to powerlevel and chase "phat l00t" in.

If, and I repeat, IF they do this right it will be more awesome than words can describe. If they keep the unique mission style that was a hallmark of the entire Neverwinter Nights series and build upon it further like every followon from the original has done. If they keep the classes as varied and as balanced as they have managed to so far. But most of all, if they can prevent the sort of insane overpowering that can happen in most MMOs, WOW included. In D&D 3.5, (The ruleset used by NWN) a group of two or three well built, complementary characters are capable of defeating a foe many times their level. Guilds are all well and good, but when it takes most of a large guild to take down a high level boss, you know something's gone wrong. The basis of the D&D and NWN (1 and 2) system was that if you were 1. lucky and 2. knew your stuff, you could take out a powerful dragon with maybe four level 8-10 characters.
If they can capture that ideal in this as well as they have in the series so far then I will accept Atari as the one true god of video gaming. And if not, well, it should still be a blast to play.
