- 1UP (B-): "Making Alex [the main character] such a badass also proves to be Prototype's undoing. It becomes a fight to follow and control Alex in the midst of the action. This problem mounts the further you get into the game, leading to more frustration than fun ... Alex can essentially fly around the city. With his jump, air dash, and glide abilities fully powered up, and the basic ability to run on any surface, the buildings become like a giant jungle gym."
- Eurogamer (7/10): "Fans of serious hero fiction will find Prototype a bit of a turn-off. You're infected with some sort of virus ... and the story of why, told through snatches of video obtained by absorbing key characters (basically, weakening and eating them) and in moody cut-scenes, is basic and yet difficult to follow ... Mission design isn't very open-ended, usually boiling down to doing something violently or stealthily, but with such a vast array of attacking options you often have the luxury of trying something different."
- IGN (7.5/10): "How long can you do flying elbow drops onto tanks or throw people off of rooftops before it gets boring? The world itself here is far from the most engaging ... Since repetition is oftentimes the name of the game here, you can be sure you'll be doing uninspired tasks over and over again."
- Giant Bomb (4/5): "Radical almost went too far with its kitchen-sink approach to combat design, but the gameplay here is satisfying and broad enough that you can have plenty of fun with it even without mastering the nuances of every last combo and attack ... Prepare to be frustrated from time to time when the mission difficulty amps up to insane levels and you feel it's you against the entire world all of a sudden."

I haven't played Prototype, but inFAMOUS only had 3 bossfights, all who were relatively simple (played on normal though), so my money would be on Prototype

So, I really don't think InFamous was all that fantastic. The controls felt wonky (jumping to ledges was a horrible experience) and the over the shoulder view didn't work for me. I really didn't enjoy playing it. Prototype on the other hand has shown to be nothing but a great purchase thus far. As far as it getting repetitive, bs. I've been playing the game for a few hours now and I might have finished 3 story missions. It is SOO much fun to just run aroung and destroy things; especially if you got the body surfing code from activision. Honestly though, none of these reviews give it justice just like all of the inFamous reviews think WAY too highly of it. But whatever.

Why is it anytime a games offers some sort of a challenge cry baby game reviewers knock down the score cause they suck and get frustrated to easy. They want everything to be a walk through... I say they need stop playing the Wii in between reviewing PS3 games. This game F'in rocks... fun... violent... nasty... and just all around kick a$$. It's everything GTA wishes it could be...

Seriously, It's fricken hard some times though. Like, the first time you have to fight the hunters in the military base. That almost made me cry but after that HUnters aren't a problem at all.
Whoever said that it's just "keep hitting square", bs there's strategy to it. Just hitting square isn't going to kill the bigger enemies. You have to mix square with triangle for combos + juggle different abilities (which btw effect different enemies in different ways) + keep your health up through consumption which can be interrupted by an enemy attack even though it goes to an animation. When you've got the military and the infected both attacking you from both sides it does get chaotic but that's the point of the game. You're caught in the middle of this huge war.

i only found that hunter thing difficult because of the shitty/dodge/roll ability, you could dodge out of one attack, but youd either just get hit on the return or by another hunter, it was God Damn useless

Aside from the PC version being horribly un optimized, and not working with the steam overlay even though it's sold on steam, it's a pretty fun game. Not ground-breakingly epic, but really fun to romp around in.

Im enjoying it a lot, the locomotion system is actually incredible entertaining to me, but not so much as wrapping a giant claw around a guys head and crushing it. The only other problem I have with it is that in a game where you're trying to be a hero, it's incredibly easy to accidentally cut civilians in half

I knew there was a reason why I didn't want Prototype.
I've been done with inFamous (playing as good) for about a week now, yet I'm still playing it.
Playing a new game as evil, now.

I've never seen such a horns locking debate over two games before in my gaming life! Is the only reason for this debate sort of related to the overall console wars by any chance?
I'm getting Prototype cause I don't have a PS3, btw.

Actually Venom had more self control then Alex. It's obvious that Alex is no genius. This my main issue with the game. You wake up with no memory of who you are, and suddenly you decide "Hey you know what would be a good idea? I am going to get my revenge and in the process why don't I tear up the city and kill tons of innocent people". "And the army says "you know what screw the whole city, lets destroy everything and let hundreds of men die in agony while killing all innocent people in the process because killing Alex is that important and he is the only one that matters. I think this self centered approach to the game is idiotic. They try to hard to make Alex seem important but fail miserably. This and all the other glitches and flubs in the game shows that it definitely deserves to be below Infamous on the ladder of well thought out games.

I can only speak to Prototype. It feels very much to me that the people behind it decided they were going to have a fun superhero sandbox game. Matrix like running and jumping ability? Check. Cool ass giant weapons to cut down oceans of mobs? Check. Fast action fighting with plenty of blood and guts? Check.
This to me is a great foundation. Add to it disturbing ability to absorb people, the slow progression of destruction and mayhem while a zombie virus spreads through an urban center. Oh tanks, and attack choppers for the hell of it. We have a very solid title. I also would agree with others that this is hardly a button masher. Run in and try toe to toe with the hunters, or even some of the well armed military, and you will be in trouble fast.
Sure this game is not breaking new ground in mission design, graphics, or overall feel. Some of the missions are little more then a GTA rampage, but that makes them no less fun. Should I use the whip to decapitate that crowd of zombies, black ops, or citizens? Lead in with a elbow freaking drop? Then go bass-o-matic on whats left? All the while hoping when the world is back to normal, there will be a collar based economy...
Over all I think 8-9 rating for this game is very fair. It will be in my line up as the "Just want to play" game for some time.

I am enjoying the game so far. It's a little repetitive in terms of missions, but which sandbox game isn't? The game has a kinetic feel to it, while the control system is relatively easy to master, you genuinely feel like you're influencing some of Alex's more spectacular abilities.
While it may sound like a cop out, any issues it does have can easily be done away with via some DLC... and it has plenty of potential for good, satisfying DLC of the Fallout 3 variety if Activision so desire.
I got it for free, essentially, due to trade ins but it's opportunity cost well spent.

On the topic of new vs. used, I would just like to state that, in my opinion, a true "gamer" doesn't buy used games, at least used games that are still available to be purchased new. I don't make a whole lot, but I don't care. I'd rather support developers over Gamestop or any other used retailer any day. Good day.

A "true" gamer? What the hell does buying games have to do with being a "true" gamer? If buying a new video game makes you feel good about yourself, that's great. For the rest of us who don't want to blow $60 on every game that looks appealing, used games work just fine.

I liked the inFamous demo a lot and prototype does look pretty cool too. The one thing that always bothers me in inFamous, though, is the sound effect when Cole runs. I just think it sounds terrible and it's always there of course so once you notice what a dumb sound it is, it's hard to forget it.

Now we know why the reviews only came out after the game was released - a pretty average set of scores for a game that seemed fairly hyped up.
Think I'll give infamous a go - sounds like it has more substance.
I was holding out to see which was betterer

Yeah, i hate it when people who make media mistake "Protaganist" for "Hero". Anyone who believes Alex Mercer is anything but an amoral, vicious, self-centered evil villain is simply wrong. He also has ill-defined goals.
"Graagh these people turned me into a ridiculously agile super-strong nigh invulnerable shapeshifting GOD! I shall have my revenge! /emo"
I hate the player character. He's an unrepentent douchebag. Reminds me of a spoiled child throwing a hissy fit, most of all. Except that's giving his written personality too much credit. Why does EVERY protaganist in EVERY current-gen game have to be a generic straight white bald gruff guy? Force unleashed, Killzone, resistance, inFamous, red faction guerilla, riddick... Well, that last one might be justified.
Bah, this rant is pointless. The game's pretty awesome. It can be really frustrating when your faced with instantly respawning rocket launcher troops and giant hunters, both of whome can knock you down while your getting up off your ass after you got knocked down, and the game could REALLY use some enemy variety... But you can practically fly across the city with your ridiculous mobility and take out whole armies singlehandedly. I might desperately be trying to save digital civilian lives whether the game expects me to or not, but when i can really let loose on packs of soldiers and infected i can truly revel in the awesome havoc of it all.

and i got voted down because i said something negative about their beloved inFamous. All i own is a PS3; i love sony. But his game didn't work for me
