Video: Project Natal invades Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
148
Last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda brought along his baby, Project Natal, and let Jimmy Fallon, John Krasinski, and Stephen Moyer go to town. The footage has made its way onto Hulu and while these are pretty much the same demos for Ricochet and Burnout Paradise that we saw at E3 last week, they're still impressive. If you're wondering about the Harrison Ford garb, apparently it was mentioned that the group didn't wear them for the game's benefit (we couldn't find the clip online explaining it). Is Jimmy trying to start a new fashion trend?

The camera probably would have tracked his massive fro as a seperate appendage and made the avatar go into seizures.

I hope Natal is that giant box sitting next to the 360, and not that sleek looking camera all of the screenshots have been showing.

Yup, I read that is still in a big box device and doesn't look like that "model" camera example yet.

I'm more excited about the interface application of this than anything, but I applaud their willingness to share with the public what's going on. It's not perfect, no, but it's also not done. After seeing the Milo demo, though, I've just been itching for a Seaman remake. I don't think Mr. Nimoy's above being a sentient fish-thing one more time.
....I just realized how far off-topic I managed to get in the course of just five sentences. I'm almost proud of myself.

looks good for casual game play. But it doesn't have enough accuracy for quick and fast game play.

I don't think this was actually made to get the hardcore gamers. I think it was made to get a wider audience of players like the Wii did. This will not replace anything, but will add to it.

I think a lot of people see it... but then a lot of people also see the word "Project..." meaning that it's still under development. So no it's not perfect ... but it's also NOT finished. I think most people are excited about the tech concepts and the "IF they pull it off" possibility. In theory, Natal has a lot of potential... it's got a combination of hardware and software that I personally have never seen put together in a device that's to be sold to the general public for a price that's probably not going to go above $100.

That Burnout Paradise bit showed me why Natal is just a purtied up PS Eye.
Imagine for a moment you are driving a real car with no resistance from the wheel. You would crash within seconds. Without resistance from the wheel, your brain cannot make the small constant adjustments needed to drive the car. That is why you see Kudo and pals bouncing back and forth completely out of control.
Or how about grabbing an imaginary gun? Since it does not have 1to1 control, how will you know when you fired your gun? When you move the gun, it will not move your avatar at the same time so how will you be accurate? If you use a toy gun, sure you can press the trigger but will the game show you pressing the trigger at the same time?
I just don't think many of you are thinking this thru and are to quickly buying into MS's PR bullshit.
That is the problem with holding onto air or holding an object connected to nothing. NO RESISTANCE. Sony figured this out thru years of messing around with motion technology from cameras.
We need feedback, resistance, a tangible object that gives the brain the needed information to properly control something.
Can it be done without any feedback or resistance? Sure, with enough practice it could. But where is the fun in that?

So yesterday you posted something horribly asinine, "Please ladies....keep defending this revolutionary technology"
And it occurred to me you're just like this loser named Kalpesh that lived down the hall from our apartment back in our sophomore year of college. He'd always say stupid things like "Hey pussies, what're you guys doing tonight?", "Whatsup queers? You guys going out?" or "WHAT UP pussies!? How goes it?"
Nobody liked him at all. And he was always an ass.
Was that you? Did you go to college at the University of Minnesota? Did you live down the hall from us? Or are you permanently trapped in a 14 year old's brain?

Personally, I don't think Natal is even being developed to replace the controll mechanism for games such as RPGs or FPSs ... we have the 360 controller for those games.
I think the goal is to bring in totally new experiences/games based around what Natal can do (hence the full body breakout game demo and the Milo demo) and provide an easier way to game to those that wouldn't be considered the tradional gamer (just like the Wii with its motion controls but it a different direction) .
You're not going to see games like Halo or COD being built to use total Natal controls. You might see them throw in some uses... like taking one hand off the controller to make squad guestures (like you would if you held a gun)... or giving out voice commands. In theory, it has a multiarray microphone so it can also be used as a hands free headset while gaming since it can block out background noise.
Also, the big difference between NAtal and PSEyeToy/Eye is that Microsoft has included a custom processor that is running there software directly on the camera and the device has a infrared camera built in that lets it detect 3D movement (tracking up to 48 joint points i believe). So you're getting depth tracking ... somthing is very important and hasn't been done yet with the PS devices without the new wands they're building.

I think the reason they use Hulu would be because the video would be deleted from Youtube super quick, especially if they link to it and it gets a lot of hits. Maintaining the article using Youtube would mean they have to check it every hour or so to make sure the video's still up, and if it isn't, then they would replace it. Hulu is just easier to deal with because you know that it'll be accessed by some people all of the time instead of none of the people none of the time.
Of course, I have no idea if there's a Youtube channel for Jimmy Fallon yet and his stuff would be cleared, but still, there you go.
They really need to work out Hulu for everyone. It's a cool service.

You're all a bunch of morons, for the most part. Cool lookin' tech demo, im still not interested in using motion control for games. Casual games sure, but not the serious ones.
If you put the word "inmate" on those guys backs it would look like they all just broke out of jail. Now all they need is the horribly uncomfartable orange sandles and they got the entire jail house wardrobe.

I see you're back to your immature idiotic ways... a shame you were better for just a few moments.
In any case, you've obviously mistaken what I've stated as I never complimented the surface, I simply said that things like the surface as used by the military and governments for their own reasons, will encourage advancement to things similar to what can be seen in cutscenes of movies and games showing off holographic capabilities for battlefields and tactics.
I did not even mention Halo Wars aside from a few particular cinematics to help you understand...
A shame I type on blind eyes.

FACT: Because it is a ball of light, Sony's solution can ONLY be used in dimly lit rooms. Objects that either emit or reflect light will throw it off.

Other funny thing too. I guess you read your posts, seeing as how you not only noticed your mistake but decided to make another post to correct it. Not only that but you took your douchery a step further and you tossed another insult at that other dope you have been arguing with.

I think the point of Natal is to attract the people who purchased Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii to the Xbox 360. Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii were the two best selling video games last year and Natal could probably run both games better without the need for the additional peripherals. (Natal would probably also be great for Punch Out) Natal is not meant to replace the standard controller for FPS, RPGs, etc. I don't remember Microsoft ever presenting Natal in that fashion and until they do I don't see a reason for anyone to complain.
Posted: Jun 11th 2009 3:53PM Look At This Suit said
To all those complaining about delay, I'm sure at least SOME of that is coming from the huge fucking 108 inch HDTV. The bigger an HDTV is, the more lag it's going to have. My 26" Sharp has a 10ms delay. Also, again, this is a prototype of the Natal. I don't even think this is the version they showed at E3.

This is kind of hitting right up on what my concerns have been.
Notice how everyone is staying to the side? So again what happens when your playing and background movements take place, dog/person walks by, friends/family on the couch behind you, etc.
I think this will work for basics but without actually having hardware to control exact points on you, I'm very skeptical.

The image in the picture above shows Jimmy Fallon and his in-game avatar in totally different positions. I think that proves the lag there is between the movement and the reaction on screen. It could also prove that it is a pretty crappy demo of an unfinished product though.

The reason everyone is standing to the side I believe is due to the jumpsuits. Someone already mentioned that the suits are probably used because they needed to to be able to switch people like they do in the show without Natal having to reconfigure to a new person which would probably be more time consuming then needed for the short demonstration.
There is already video on this technology that shows that it can lock onto on person and ignore everything else within the background.
There is also a interview where 3DV person describe how accurate the device is. Most people forget that you do not have to do the full body but can get as small as a person finger. The smaller the areas the camera has to track the more accurate it is with the controls. In other words, it can be just as accurate as the Sony wands just by narrowing the field the camera track. The main difference is that Natal can track all the fingers while the wand can only track its single point.

Actually I believe the problem is more towards the 48 joint for full body motion then lag. There were things that Jimmy did that did not register with Natal like the picture you see. There wasn't lag in that picture but instead Natal did not do the motion at all, it stopped up to a point.
