Doom Resurrection is an on-rails shooter
If you read the name of John Carmack's latest project yesterday, Doom Resurrection, you likely assumed you'd spend the duration of the upcoming iPhone game shooting evil shit to death. You'd be correct. But today, IGN's reporting that you won't have to worry about what your feet are doing while you're battling demons.
In this on-rails shooter, you'll apparently twist and tilt the phone to aim and tap the screen to fire. We don't know about you, but we're not bothered about the loss of mobility: As House of the Dead: Overkill recently taught us, we can still have a great time riding the rails.

This should be an easy port to the Wii. They won't even have to change the graphics.
(Yes, I'm kidding. But other people won't be and that's the problem ;) )
NaeemTHM @ Jun 12th 2009 5:10AM
Funny you mention that. On one of Carmack's blogs he said that Doom Resurrection is "closely related" to his upcoming Wii project.
All signs point to a half assed port of the iPhone game.
Mr Khan @ Jun 12th 2009 11:35AM
It all comes together, doesn't it?
feh.

Whats an on-rails shooter???
This_Time @ Jun 12th 2009 1:10AM
Think an arcade shooter like time crisis, no free movement, just shootin'.
deslock @ Jun 12th 2009 6:53PM
The Google Android G1 has this game running, full textures, FULL MOVEMENT, and the thing is free. Oh and full soundtrack, all the secrets and extras and you can download all the other expansions for free.
iphone doom SUUUUUUCKS. Why does it have to bite so bad? Crappy controls is that it?
carg0 @ Jun 12th 2009 1:10AM
y'know the term "on-rails shooter" is supposed to be used when describing a genre... not as a f*ing excuse to make shovelware.
CaramelZappa @ Jun 12th 2009 1:13AM
I honestly can't stand the whole "tilt the screen" to aim thing that iphone games tend to use. I don't like the view of the screen constantly shifting. I'm not playing with a labyrinth, I'm playing a shooter. Not fun.
DeepFriedSushi @ Jun 12th 2009 1:25AM
has to be a rail shooter cause controls for ipodtouch/iphone just doesnt work.
the accelerometer is too finicky and touch buttons dont work because you cant feel them.
Icarus @ Jun 12th 2009 1:42AM
the controls work just fine on wolfenstein 3d
ohyeahcola @ Jun 12th 2009 1:35AM
im gettin an ipod touch next month!!! and then this and peggle
Rob @ Jun 12th 2009 7:45AM
buy peggle today for one dollar
John Z @ Jun 12th 2009 8:28AM
Agreed. You can purchase apps via iTunes without having an iPhone yet, so there's little reason to NOT buy it now (while it's a buck).
emmzee @ Jun 12th 2009 1:43AM
I was kinda interested in this, but nah. Why not release a port of the original DOOM, like they did for Wolf3D?
relaxeder @ Jun 12th 2009 3:12AM
That's in the works, too. It's called Doom Classic.
I never liked onrails shooters, so my interest in this pretty much just dipped..
ill trooper @ Jun 12th 2009 3:46AM
I wasn't too interested yesterday, and this news just seals the non-deal, or un-seals the possible deal, or seals the fact that there is no deal, or...
You know what I mean.
NaeemTHM @ Jun 12th 2009 5:17AM
I think I'm still going to check it out. I mean Carmack himself has been working night and day on this game. Since the App store launched last year, he's been trying to create a game that would establish the iPhone as a serious gaming platform.
Now I'm not sure an on-rails shooter is going to turn heads, but they can be fun if done correctly. Like McElroy said, House of the Dead Wii was bloody fantastic.
Nook @ Jun 12th 2009 6:37AM
@Naeem - and nothing says 'serious' game more than one on rails.
Mr Khan @ Jun 12th 2009 11:37AM
So then it all comes together to indicate what the Wii project is: Doom on rails.
Oh dear.
David Black @ Jun 12th 2009 1:00PM
iPhone = Portable Wii?
Hermes @ Jun 12th 2009 5:35PM
This should be fun
