EA VP: 'Small team' working on more Mirror's Edge
Joy be thine, as EA has confirmed Joystiq GOTY Mirror's Edge won't be the last we see of Faith. In speaking with Videogamer back at E3, EA's senior VP of EA Games Europe, Patrick Soderlund, stated, "You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure. It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I'm excited about what we do."
Of course, one mustn't jump to conclusions and automatically label this as a sequel. Soderlund could've meant anything based on that comment. EA could be working on a full-fledged sequel (something we desperately need), sure, or could be adapting a port for some other system. Or, the company could be making a spiffy new Flash game for all we know. Only time will tell, but the important thing is that no matter what this project turns out to be, we all have more parkour-based gameplay to look forward to down the line. And that's a very good thing.

Oh how I loved Mirror's Edge... I hope it's a full sequel! And maybe a little longer
AsherR @ Jun 12th 2009 3:27PM
Agreed. I think that a lot of the problems with Mirror's Edge are totally fixable.
I loved the game, but I wish they spent more time on the narrative, both in the game and in development.
macserv @ Jun 14th 2009 6:24PM
I agree, the problems are easily fixable. I think Mirror's Edge truly represents the next generation of platform games, but EA needs to respect the rules of the genre, specifically: "If the game involves jumping, the feet must be visible at all times." Give me a third-person version, and I'll play the crap out of whatever M.E. game they throw out there.
Linkb8s @ Jun 12th 2009 3:21PM
More Mirror's Edge content (whatever kind of content it might be) is always welcome.
BlackDove @ Jun 12th 2009 3:25PM
All Mirror's Edge 2 needs are level designers. A better writer is wishful, not not really necessary.
Roto13 @ Jun 12th 2009 4:12PM
I think the combat needs to be fixed or removed. I don't think it really added anything positive to the experience. :P
Kdiggy @ Jun 12th 2009 3:28PM
I beat the first one... I will not be buying the sequel. It's like they took an awesome idea and strangled all of the fun out of it. ME was THE worst game I have played in a long time.
motorer @ Jun 12th 2009 4:55PM
funny, i thought it was one of the better games of 2008. i loved it. i've played through it many times and i can't wait for the sequel.
Muhammad-Oli @ Jun 12th 2009 8:50PM
Why would you play through it and 'beat' it if you thought it was the worst game you've played in a long time. Exaggerate much?
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Jun 12th 2009 3:29PM
Watching replays would be a good addition methinks.
Douche Bigalow @ Jun 12th 2009 3:31PM
Well thank goodness. It's not as if using the same 4 acrobatic maneuvers and crappy combat got monontonous - this game NEEDS a sequel!
Alzheimers @ Jun 12th 2009 3:33PM
They could both save a bundle AND improve the game experience by ditching the anime cinematics in favor of in-game cutscenes.
Hey, it worked for Half Life.
cuteSAVAGE @ Jun 12th 2009 3:42PM
100% agreed. Mirror's Edge was my favorite game last year (I'm easy to please I guess), but the one thing I absolutely hated were the cutscenes. The art style and animation of the cinematics clashed with the actual game. I actually thought the character models in the game were fantastic, though I know a lot of reviewers thought differently.
Would love to see ME2 achieve the same cinematic and interactive balance of the Half-Life series.
DWells55 @ Jun 12th 2009 4:38PM
Conflicting styles can work though. For example, InFamous's comic-styled cutscenes didn't match up to the in-game graphics very much, but I think that was probably some of the coolest and best-presented storytelling I've seen in any game recently. And I'm not much of a comic book fan either.
LameDuck @ Jun 12th 2009 5:40PM
The cut-scenes reminded me of Out of this World and Flashback. lol
I loved this game too and I really, REALLY hope it's a true Mirror's Edge 2 and INCLUDE ONLINE PLAY! How freaking awesome would it be to have co-op and races?! Heck, you could even do things like landing on a platform at the same time to keep it from toppling or tag-team style attacks.
ballistic3188 @ Jun 12th 2009 3:33PM
more platforming less forced fights and a better story and i am in for any sequel.
Altairio @ Jun 12th 2009 3:34PM
Good. Hope they take out the frustrating combat and make it less linear. This was one of the biggest let downs of 2008 for me.
uncle jesse @ Jun 12th 2009 3:41PM
Mirror's Edge really clicked with me. I know others that played it and gave up on it or just flat out hated it. I really enjoyed it.
A full sequel is definitely the way to go with this. Iron out the little problems, focus more on outdoor/rooftop environments, get rid of even having the option of shooting (I find it much more intense to be chased down, unarmed, and running for your life), and include a multiplayer mode (maybe something like the time trial races, but against 8 others in real time) and this could be amazing. Just some ideas.
cuteSAVAGE @ Jun 12th 2009 3:49PM
I don't know about getting rid of shooting entirely. I personally played through without ever touching a weapon (save for the two required parts) the first couple times, and that is definitely the most fun way to play... The option should still be there though. Maybe if they could work the weapon play into your acrobatics and melee combat. Make the transition between free running and weapon combat fluid, and not make it feel like a stiff port of a formerly PC exclusive shooter. Also, how cool would it be to have a sword :P
I was hoping for some sort of Hide and Seek / Tag like multiplayer in ME, that would be cool. Racing as well.
uncle jesse @ Jun 12th 2009 3:58PM
I'm sure they could make the shooting much better, but I just don't think this game needs it. It was definitely just a tiny part of the game and it rewarded you for not even touching a gun at all. I say take it out completely and focus on the hand-to-hand. I like the disarming moves too. She should disarm them and then have an animation for taking apart their weapons, Bruce Wayne style on the shotgun in Dark Knight!
A sword you say? Haha. It might be a little dangerous to be flipping on rooftops with a sword... just a little.
Oh, forgot to add boob jiggles. If you expect me to be immersed in the character, I want to look down and see some cleavage, dammit! Haha, kidding.
el serpiente @ Jun 12th 2009 5:43PM
They should give faith a sniper rifle with a chainsaw attached. And electric powers.
LameDuck @ Jun 12th 2009 6:14PM
No more snatching guns. Give her more kung-fu action. That would be awesome!
skyzbig @ Jun 12th 2009 3:48PM
Great great news!
I don't understand the ferocity of the hate that M.E got...sure it wasn't perfick, but it was certainly refreshing.
RasenganFury @ Jun 12th 2009 3:52PM
I loved Mirror's Edge. A sequel with a longer story, better done cutscenes, and maybe some form of multiplayer would be awesome.
Crazy-008 @ Jun 12th 2009 3:54PM
Guns don't kill people...Runner with guns kill people...
dennis @ Jun 12th 2009 4:19PM
Motion Control, Here is your cue...Don't screw it up
NitroMikeo @ Jun 12th 2009 4:28PM
That would be awesome!
Levi @ Jun 12th 2009 8:09PM
actually this is one instance where I don't think motion controls would be better. The game doesn't need the aiming precision of an IR pointer, and I think the up/down movement buttons were a genius way of mapping tons of moves to essentially two buttons.
NitroMikeo @ Jun 12th 2009 4:18PM
There was alot wrong with that game. If they get it right, the second could be a game to watch out for.
aristokrat @ Jun 12th 2009 4:18PM
They need to look up Oni, and add that combat system to the freerunning and it'll be an awesome game. Man how I loved Oni...
DJcube @ Jun 12th 2009 4:19PM
The first few levels were awesome, the mid levels were decent and the last few were absolutely terrible.
Make the levels easy (as in easy to see where to go), but with optional tougher-but-quicker routes. The combat needs improving and the cutscenes need replacing with in-game ones.
Draco Basileus @ Jun 12th 2009 4:36PM
Actually just finished ME for the first time today. Once thing that I think would be great for a sequel would be to have an open city environment, rather than linear corridors. Think inFamous' or Crackdown's cityscape, but in first person.
Then you could just receive objectives or destinations on a map and it would be up to the player to figure out the fastest way there.
They also need to refine the hand to hand combat.
E @ Jun 12th 2009 6:43PM
I agree. The hand-to-hand wasn't terrible but...it wasn't anything particularly enticing either. In fact, I usually found running away and escaping was more worthwhile than fighting 'cause the agents would always kill me.
georgeschwartzjr @ Jun 12th 2009 4:40PM
There is a typo in your Mirrors Edge link.
Afrocass @ Jun 12th 2009 5:15PM
YES YES YES!!! hallelujah! i was so worried we wouldn't see a sequel.. ME was my favorite New IP from last year.. so glad they haven't dropped the franchise...
Polkster @ Jun 13th 2009 1:10AM
This game sucked and I think it's stupid how people making legitimate disparaging comments about it are being voted down.
Wossname @ Jun 12th 2009 6:43PM
It was definitely not for everyone, but "it sucked!" is not a legitimate disparaging comment.
I personally thought Mirror's Edge was the most fun, interesting and original game of 2008. It had its flaws, sure, but that's what sequels are for
Levi @ Jun 12th 2009 8:10PM
I can see why certain people wouldn't like it, you know, douchebags who require an epic story in every game, etc...
E @ Jun 12th 2009 6:41PM
Never played Mirror's Edge other than the demo and while it was alright (the running sequences were awesome), it could use a few more coats of paint to make it totally knock-out. I'm glad they're going to give it another shot because the title holds a lot of promise!
Damian @ Jun 12th 2009 6:52PM
I never bought mirrors edge because of the combat, but the running was fantastic in the demo, i really hope the sequel just has running/running away from people, and no combat.
If it does have combat, at least give faith more life.
Ryan @ Jun 12th 2009 6:58PM
This was the best game I've played in a long, long time. The main
complaint people have is with combat, but ME is not about combat.
Combatant's are obstacle's, and players attempting to treat them as
FPS combatants quickly became frustrated with the gameplay. People
aren't used to playing a game where they're weaker than their
enemies.
It's not so much that the game was flawed, but that everyone sees the
potential that movement mechanics like this could have in an FPS game,
and they're frustrated that it wasn't this game.
Misfit Toy @ Jun 12th 2009 7:02PM
Most games start out with a small team, so this is no indicator that it won't grow to a full on project. Most of the front end is concept design before they involve a larger team to build out the ideas.
Nice to see that this game will get a sequel. I bought and enjoyed the first.
Levi @ Jun 12th 2009 8:19PM
hold on guys, take out the shooting? No! The game gives you the option of being able to play through it without shooting people, but it would be such a bad idea to take out shooting altogether. How incredibly stupid would it be to get swarmed by a bunch of dudes, there' a few guns on the floor around you from knockin out a few other dudes earlier, and you can't just pick em up and fire away? I say keep it in as an option. Give the player more incentive to fight without em. Change the storyline to make you feel guilty for shooting people! That's way awesomerest!
I personally loved ME, but I can understand why some people don't like it. I do feel that if you don't "get it" (aka you suck at it), then it wouldn't be fun. It could certainly use some more polish, and hopefully the designers and mappers learn from the weaker points. Examples: when you're being chased, don't make the player look all over the place to figure out how to get from point a to point b. When you're NOT being chased, make it more like a puzzle to get to the destination. Also, the game could learn a bit from the awesome Condemned 2 to do the hand to hand combat over. I thought C2 had the BEST hand to hand in first person, Riddick coming in second.
I loved ME because it was a game that could really be enjoyable if you could get past its weak points, and there is no other game that offers what it offers. I have high hopes for the sequel!!
kudos @ Jun 12th 2009 11:39PM
I would totally love to see team-based multiplayer modes like: objective-based runners vs. swat, or runners vs. anti-runners - capture the bag. I think it could be an awesome experience!
I would also love the storyline of ME universe to be expanded upon.
Polkster @ Jun 13th 2009 1:09AM
How about douchebags who require competent gameplay?
senorjohn117 @ Jun 13th 2009 6:22AM
wtf ever happened to the dlc?? does no one remember
those maps that were supposed to come out months ago?
Jasmino924 @ Jun 13th 2009 7:36PM
A while ago I was reading up about a possible ARG for the promotion of Mirror's Edge 2 and it hinted at a November release date.

I'm not surprised that EA hasn't done much with this franchise. It's not Madden. I wish DICE could publish this on their own. The combat was clunky, but it provided an experience I'd never had before in a game of its type. It's worth a sequel, but it shouldn't be shoved out the door. It needs work to be a real hit.
