Lost Planet 2 could be an Xbox 360 timed exclusive in Japan [update]
Capcom's Japanese site for Lost Planet 2 has been updated with estimated release periods for both the Xbox 360 and newly-announced PlayStation 3 versions. The Xbox 360 version is listed as coming out this winter, but the PlayStation 3 version has an undetermined date. It appears, then, that Lost Planet 2 will be a timed exclusive for the 360, at least in Japan. Unless Capcom's unnanounced PS3 release window turns out the same as the 360 release window.Unofficial sources (by which we mean gamestop.com) show the same North American release date, February 23, for both versions, but that could be a placeholder. We're currently inquiring with both Capcom and Microsoft to determine the timing of the North American releases.
We're more apt to believe, by the way, that the delay in Japan is due to starting the PS3 version later, and not due to any agreements -- because why on earth would Capcom agree to make something Xbox 360 exclusive in Japan for any period of time?
Update: Capcom has confirmed plans for a simultaneous PS3/360 release of Lost Planet 2. Read all about it here.

Timed exclusive...in JAPAN?! Awesome. The 4 people in Japan with a 360 will be ecstatic.
Cosmo @ Jun 12th 2009 1:43PM
I think their also hoping that some will actually purchase a 360 just to play this game early, and then discover the other games the system has to offer as well.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 12th 2009 1:45PM
Actually the million+ that have the system will be ecstatic...

They'd be better off making it a Virtual Boy exclusive.
Cosmo @ Jun 12th 2009 1:23PM
Why is Microsoft taking so much time and effort to secure exclusives (timed and un-timed) but Sony is not? Does Sony not have enough money to do so? Do they just not care? Do they not want to "sink to that level"?
It seems as though most sales in Japan of Lost Planet 2 will be on the PS3, same went for Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter 4, Devil May Cry 4 if I'm not mistaken.
I dunno if having it come out first for the 360 in Japan will help much. Microsoft sure is trying hard, I'll give them an A for effort. If only they loved the PC and Games for Windows LIVE as much. : )
NaeemTHM @ Jun 12th 2009 1:29PM
Timed exclusives do seem to work. If a game comes out a few months earlier on the 360, the sales are always higher than on the PS3. I mean if you had both consoles and a game came out on the PS3 first...why wouldn't you just get it for the PS3? Is there any real reason to wait?
Even when the games are released at a later date with extra stuff on the PS3, it doesn't seem to matter.
Trev @ Jun 12th 2009 1:37PM
Sony tends to make it's own exclusives with first and "second" party games by in-house, owned or close-but-independent (that's the second, like Sucker Punch and Insomniac) studios. Microsoft tries to secure exclusive games instead, but then the game will usually also come out on PC and not really be exclusive to the 360 (thus PC owners won't have to buy a 360), and has a chance to go multi-console later like Bioshock, GRAW2, Lost Planet, Dead Rising 2, Ninja Gaiden and so on. Unless I /need/ a game right away or otherwise get delayed from buying it, they could maybe lose a sale.
Microsoft's method tends to get more press, but MS also likes to drum it up whenever they can. Sony just announces the games so they don't get the extra press from "Third Party X announces new game exclusively for the PS3".
Cosmo @ Jun 12th 2009 1:38PM
If I had both systems, I would probably buy Lost Planet 2 for the 360 if it came out for it first. And then when an enhanced edition with extra content is announced again, I'll buy that version again and kick myself. : )
I hope the release date for the PC version will be around the same time as the console versions or simultaneously, not months later like for Mass Effect, Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter 4, etc.
jason @ Jun 12th 2009 2:28PM
Sony do have money they not stupid and thow it alway like MS is doing .......just think all that money MS has to get exclusive DLC and games all come from the Red Ring of Death probs that people have to pay to get it fix thats really sad ...
thats why i wont spend money on a 360 b/c of the that prob untill MS fix that i wont buy there crap .
DeepFriedSushi @ Jun 12th 2009 4:23PM
it has more to do with development time. capcom can focus on the 360 version and get it finished on time for christmas, or make it multiplatfrom and miss that window.
timed exclusives have more to do with ps3 being difficult to develop for because of poor dev kits/poor architecture.
look at last remnant.
bakerboi @ Jun 12th 2009 4:49PM
@DeepFriedSushi
It DOES NOT have to do with "poor dev kits/poor architecture". And you using Last Remnant as an example proves my point. It wasn't the PS3's fault the engine was preliminary garbage.
And it was out of SE's hands being able to "fix it" so it could run on the PS3. They stated after Epic got UT3 up and running on the PS3 things went much more smoothly but by then they must have already decided to drop the PS3 version.
It has something to do with development time, but not in the way your trying to spin it. That hurdle was crossed back in '07. The fact of the matter is, and like CAPCOM said, it's easier to port from PC to 360 without as much effort because of their similarities.
But instead of understanding that you want to complain about, how come you can't solve a division problem the same way you solve a multiplication.
Timstew @ Jun 13th 2009 12:59AM
As a PS3 owner, 360 timed exclusives hurt a bit until I realize that the latter release usually comes with more content and less bugs. I thinking of the first Lost Plant, Bioshock, Eternal Sonata, and several PSN games (from what I've read).
Khazid'hea @ Jun 12th 2009 1:30PM
"timed exclusive" just sounds so stupid. who comes up with this shit?
ChristmasBeard @ Jun 12th 2009 1:35PM
*ahem*....woo?
Christ-ian @ Jun 12th 2009 1:43PM
I'm about as excited for this as I was for Alter Bridge's sophomore album.
Cosmo @ Jun 12th 2009 1:36PM
People who want their system to sell more than the competition especially when their sales and install base are low in a certain country.
Cosmo @ Jun 12th 2009 1:39PM
Whoops, meant for Khazid'hea.
TheLionOfAzzalle @ Jun 12th 2009 1:38PM
Good stuff!
Go 360!!!!
Einhanderkiller @ Jun 12th 2009 1:53PM
lol.
Valamphias @ Jun 12th 2009 1:40PM
I've never understood what makes timed exclusives so valuable. It'll be on the PS3 soon anyway, and people with the system will just wait it out or visit a friend and play his 360.
Mr Freeze (Rehabilitation FTW) @ Jun 12th 2009 1:50PM
yeah, I agree. I just hope by the time LP2 gets released for the PS3, that I can get it used for a cheap price for the X360.
Trev @ Jun 12th 2009 1:49PM
Reply to Khazid'hea, because it won't actually show me that it's replying:
I agree; it's kind of silly. Either a game is not-on-anything-else exclusive, or it really isn't exclusive. But "exclusive" has become a buzzword and gets lots of attention. It's like the Fallout 3 DLC was exclusive to 360 /and PC/ and then it's coming to PS3 anyway, making it a "timed-semi-exclusive".
It's really just diluting the meaning of exclusive; pretty soon things will be "exclusive" to everything but the Atari Jaguar and no one will care at all. I mean, there are already fanboys that get puffed up because the XBL store updates a couple days ahead of the PS Store. Woo! Tuesday-exclusive! I think there were even some fanboys on the other side that gloated about the MvC2 demo, which is a /demo/ for a fucking rerelease. Seriously?
Mr Freeze (Rehabilitation FTW) @ Jun 12th 2009 1:52PM
Hey Joystiq, where's the pic of earth lost in a maze? I am waiting for you guys to update the pic for LP2.
golobulus @ Jun 12th 2009 2:20PM
it's called beta testing. so unlike bioshock PS3, the game will actually turn out better than the original.... i know that's putting a lot of faith in a developer... and we all know not to do that this generation.
golobulus @ Jun 12th 2009 2:23PM
and unlike lost planet PS3.
Animus @ Jun 12th 2009 3:00PM
I played a game of Gears of War 2 yesterday and ended up facing a team of Japanese players. We won, but it was still cool to see that there are people in Japan that play the game, let alone on an Xbox360.
Nick @ Jun 12th 2009 3:02PM
Lost Planet 2 is definitely not a system seller.
Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) @ Jun 12th 2009 3:15PM
that's the most retarded thing i have heard all week...
Kdiggy @ Jun 12th 2009 3:32PM
The three Japanese people who actually bought a 360 must be pissed.
ThatPCgameryouhate @ Jun 12th 2009 3:51PM
There pissed because they can get the game early? Or this will completely unaffected their lives otherwise?
Yeah, I'd be pissed too.
Kdiggy @ Jun 12th 2009 4:03PM
