After being potentially canceled as of a few months ago, Gauntlet DS has re-emerged from purgatory with a new publisher in Majesco. At very least, that's our best guess based on an ESRB rating for the game found by a Gauntlet-lovin' GoNintendo reader.
Once announced as being developed by Backbone Entertainment and published by now Square Enix-owned Eidos, the title was delisted from GameStop's website as well as Amazon back in February. Does this mean we'll finally be able to try our very best not to shoot food on the DS in the near future? One can only dream.

I loved the gauntlet series. I just hope they don't screw this one up. If they made it 2d, flashed up the graphics, added online coop, and some extra gameplay enhancements, this could be an awesome game.

I guess you were totally clueless on the history of this game.
A demo popped up on Nintendo channel a few months ago. Anyway the whole point was to resurrect the franchise on DS and have 2d display over 2 screens with some 3d models. It looked fairly good and ran pretty smooth. It did have online play and it actually has been finished for over a year but nobody wanted to publish it.
So the fact that it has popped up on release list after all this time is a surprise to say the least.

The arcade game is freakin' awesome. Not sure it will make a great port to a handheld.

It's safe to say now that Square Enix is licensing/loaning Gauntlet DS, in a similar manner how Majesco is the US publisher of the Mama franchise.

I think this game looks shite from the videos. It would have been much better to keep it more like the original arcade game. It's a classic multiplayer arcade game. Simple, addicitive & brilliant. Why mess with that formula? It looks like they've tried to hard to make it more modern. Well if your going to do that then why call it Gauntlet?! Why not just make a new game? This is a new game masquerading as a classic. I think it's wrong.

This is a franchise that has since been replaced by Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Champions of Norrath, and soon to be released Borderlands.
Any relevance gauntlet once had is attached solely to nostalgia as the real fans have discovered Gauntlet's gameplay, not so good 10 years later.... It's a gameplay based on limitations that have disappeared long ago.

It's really sad that nostalgia is the only thing keeping this franchise alive. A couple days ago me and a couple of my friends popped in Dark Legacy into my Xbox, and we had a blast. The game wasn't ground breaking or anything, it was just plain FUN.
Also the fact that it was a little silly gave it a little charm. This is how the Gauntlet games should be, made by those nut jobs at Midway who know the formula for silly fun games. It's too bad that the silly factor was dumbed down to zero in Seven Sorrows, and it looks to be completely gone in the DS game.
If they can find the time to add just a little silliness to this game, it would make it that much more fun. Can't wait for the game to come out though, I'm still gonna buy it!
Oh yeah...since Eidos owns Gauntlet, and Square-enix owns Eidos...Final Fantasy Gauntlet, anyone?
