The new Bionic Commando sold a mere 27,000 units during its first month of sale in the US this May, reports Gamasutra. Well, its "first month" might be stretching it (like a grapple arm) a bit. The title went on sale May 19, which means it was at retail for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for a little under two weeks. Although, even with that caveat, those sales figures still aren't good for the modestly reviewed title, which had plenty of promotion.
Terminator Salvation, also developed by (the allegedly downsized) Grin and released around the same time as BC, sold 43,000 units with exceptionally poor reviews. To really put things in perspective, Bionic Commando Rearmed -- the high-def remake of the classic game -- sold 130,000 copies during its first week late last year.

I love this game, and think it's well worth the full $60 I spent on it; however, it seems as if most people are too afraid to try something new (the arm), only listen to reviewers (who claim it to be above average, but not fantastic), or got a bad taste from the game with the demo; where they probably tried one match, died a lot, couldn't swing correctly, and gave up on the game.
It's not a pick-up and play type of game, you're going to have to take quite a bit of time to get used to how the bionic arm works, and it definitely takes quite a bit of time to master. I think that's what the demo did wrong, it just gave multiplayer, and while the multiplayer is pretty good, it just sort of dropped you in there, without any sort of tutorial. You were on your own to figure out how everything worked, and I imagine that most people, unless already B.C. fans, wouldn't stick around to learn how to play properly.
I have also yet to see much advertising for it, besides on the internet. So, as much as I love this game, I can see why it flopped; it's not due to a bad game, it's just a bad demo, combined with bad advertising.
It's a shame, because this game is even better than Rearmed, and Rearmed is quite a fantastic game to begin with. Hopefully, it will still get a sequel, even if it is in the form of another Rearmed type of game (since apparently selling in full 3D doesn't seem to work well).

I am playing the game now , the swing mechanic is pretty hard for me to get right for some reason. Sometimes for no reason at all I release at the proper time and yet I still fall straight down..I definitely SHOULD have had enough momentum to make it to the next ledge but I go straight down to my death. It can be frustrating..but its really a decent game. The scope is a must when shooting as trying to kill the enemy's without it is a foolhardy way to play. The game is probably a 29.99 game , its not worth 60 bucks..I loved BC:R , that was well done.

I was excited for this game until I got my hands on the MP demo. It was horrible to say the least

I downloaded the multiplayer demo, and it was TERRIBLE. Maybe that has something to do with the poor sales...?

well that demo sure didn't help. That thing sucked. I literally saw the movement, grabbed something, sayt back in shock, then erased it. wtf happened to a single player demo that gets you into the game? Whose fucking great idea was it to put out a multi-player demo- and a bad one- for a single-player focused game?
aghghrghrgh fire that guy!

Based on all of the bad reviews, most people picked up Infamous (awesome game) or Prototype (ok game) instead. Bionic Commando might be worth a rent, or buy used at $15.00

I think the problem is that our commando lost his flattop....had it been kept, the game would of been much better

I played the demo on Xbox Live...it was actually pretty fun, but I don't think it was worth a buy.

Having played the game, there are some really poor design choices that hurt the experience. The swing mechanic is fantastic but you are basically kill if you go to high or outside of the given path. The combat is fun but it could have use more work. The MP is ok but not a game seller. Overall is a good rental. It didn't sell because is not that good and their marketing was poor.

I really want to buy it, but I don't have the game playing time I used to, and games in Canada recently went back up to $69.99, which I just can't justify for Bionic Commando. I'm saving that cash for Ghost Busters.

I think the problem with this game is nobody really wanted it in 3-D. Re-armed was awesome...they should have took that idea all out, with tons of new levels, online multiplayer, etc. etc. and put that for $30-$40. I know I would have picked that up, especially if the demo was half as good as Re-armed.

Demo and subsequential "meh" reviews killed it for me. I was actually looking forward to the game until that point...

I think the biggest problem was the multiplayer demo that was released. There's no way that jumping into a game with lots of people that already know how to swing is going to be a good way to learn, and they should have known that. Instant turn-off.
I'm not sure if they should have released a single player demo or not. They have a real problem with this game, and that is that the swing mechanics take a couple hours to get the "feel" for. Once you do they are awesome. I'm not sure most people downloading a demo would understand that... they would likly just get frustrated and cross it off the list.
The other issue is that your character is pretty pitiful in power initially. It takes a while to build into the great game that it is. I'm not sure that people today have the patience to stick with it for a few hours until they can control it well and have enough powers that the fun really starts to kick in.
Anyone who didn't buy this game based on a hairstyle is dumb as wood in my opinion. How shallow are you people??? It's cool and moves in the wind, which helps show the inertia of the swing mechanic. Grow up.
I will definitely say the game lacks a certain amount of "polish". The crappy controller screen during every load sequence. The deaths in ankle-deep water. Nearly instant death by radiation (why not just let you get back on the path?). No way to view the cinemas outside the game. Can't build your character up through multiple games. Can't go back and get missed collectibles or challenges,
The last one means that if you want to complete everything you almost NEED to use a strategy guide. And the one that's available isn't very good (I hate Prima).
But overall I would give this game an 8.5. Graphics are great. Gameplay is mostly great. Story is average. Definitely worth playing.

BC was hampered by a number of severe limitations. An invisible nuclear barrier that frequently kills you without warning, having to restart the game from scratch to collect missed items and a very lame swinging mechanic.
The best thing Capcom can do now is to do what they promised and reneged on, namely not patching BC: Rearmed for trophies.
When you flick the bird to a community like that you'll pay the price and 27,000 in sales across both 360 & PS3 is a joke.

Alright first to let you know although there's no easy mode in the game, medium is your easy mode. It's just given a different name which I don't know why but medium is very easy to play. The learning curve of this game won't take you a half an hour. Theres a training mode in it and once you finish that, your ready for the game. Seriously if you didn't get the hang of the game, you wouldn't finish the training mode and thats at the start of the game. The only flaws I noticed about the game was the incredibly long checkpoint's but they only help you improve your game and the rediculous radiation areas. If you liked the remake of 2d game then at least give this one a rent. Don't go knocking it if you havn't tryed it

As I said before...
Make a Monster Hunter for PS3, unlmited contents, weekly addons and good suport for online modes ...
Capcom must stop to release crappy games (aka: flock, age of booty. etc)

Well this is no shocker as this Bionic Commando is tedious at best. The enemy selection was repetatively boring and the lack of different final boss battles didn't make it any better. The only thing I give Grin credit for is making the arm work somewhat in a 3D space, that's it and that's all I can really hype.
Rearmed should be bought up as its the Bee's Knees.
Anything Terminator related would sale if only, and in this HORRIBLE and perfect example, due to the franchise being so beloved, and rightfully so. The game though was disgustingly, but lacking any shock value, bad.

you are right in one thing man, sometimes bad sales = bad timing that´s a fact, just look at what happened with dead space and mirror´s age ( the best games i bought for my p.c. last year) i can´t believe they didn´t sell like hot cakes but the sims 3 sold more than 1.4 millions in one week!!! so that´s true maybe bionic commando has a bad timing too, i can´´t really say a lot about it as i haven´t seen it, so i don´t really know if it´s good or not. But i still think that at the end the selling power of bionic commando is not as strong as dead rising for example. Anyway it´s true that sonic is a big pile of shit but to be honest i think that has to do more with the fact that for some weird reason sonic was never able to leave the 2d world, i don´t know if you agree here but i think that sonic kicked ass when it was 2d but when it changed to 3d the game just sucked, no sonic game in 3d as been able to sell the amount of copies that any of the 3d versions of mario have sold so far. Why? well, i don´t know but it looks like the whole speed concept of sonic that was the biggest selling point when it appeared is not something that you can translate to 3d and it looks like it only worked on 2d, don´t know just my 2 cents :D

The issue was advertising. Games only sell because of it. Advertising builds up hype, and that makes people want to buy the game. Just look at other great games like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. It was an incredible game, but it just wasn't advertised enough to generate exceptional sales figures.
