id Software rep 'saddened' by death of Duke Nukem Forever

"For me it was personally sad," he told Videogamer. "I know a lot of people at the studio were really surprised and saddened for sure." He went on to explain the historical connection between the two companies: "We had originally moved to Dallas because Apogee, who morphed into 3D Realms, was our original publisher. So id might not even be in Dallas and a lot of us wouldn't even be working in the games industry if it wasn't for Apogee and 3D Realms."
Nix said that he "thought (the news of the cancellation) was a joke when I heard the other day." He also noted that id is currently hiring, and that "There are some really talented guys in (3D Realms) so it very well could happen that some of them end up at id." Overall, it's a pretty measured and sensitive response from the company who popularized "gibs."

3d Realms' RotT popularized gibs, not id.

Doom, which came out a couple years before RotT, had plenty of gibs.

I would think experience working on DNF would just kill a resumé.
"So you were part of a team that spent over a decade working on one title that was never released? We'll let you know."

The animation reel that was leaked after 3dr stopped working on the game had some very nice work in it, and that guy shouldn't have any trouble landing a job elsewhere.
I don't know enough about the technical aspects of Duke4 to say what did or didn't look good about the game (especially given their circumstances. As I understand, it was running on a heavily modified Unreal Tournament 99 engine), but I'd think the main people whose professional reputations are damaged by this situation would be 3DR's management, not the guys actually building stuff.

Did anyone seriously think this would come out?
Foetoid @ Jun 15th 2009 9:52PM
Me.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 15th 2009 9:55PM
Nop but I was hoping for a fake demo after the now worthless teaser.
CJLopez @ Jun 15th 2009 9:57PM
I did
CH3BURASHKA @ Jun 15th 2009 9:58PM
Can't it still come out; doesn't 2K own the rights or something? Don't stop holding your breath just yet!
TracerBullet @ Jun 15th 2009 10:00PM
Nope.
But was entertaining to see their justificatives to the press year after year, and DNF winning all those vaporwares.
Plus, it was the only thing everybody could mock without starting a fanboy war. :sigh:, we have to find another comm on ground

I thought there was a real chance it would come out. Don't forget that Team Fortress 2 spent nearly a decade in development before it was finally released. Just because a game is delayed repeatedly doesn't mean it will never be released.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 15th 2009 9:54PM
For me they will always be Apogee.
Godspeed 3d Realms.
MuToiD_MaN @ Jun 15th 2009 10:02PM
So 3DR employees will most likely be parking their bricks within id's walls?
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Jun 15th 2009 10:12PM
Death might be a relief, after 13 years in a coma.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 15th 2009 10:57PM
I think is an anticlimatic ending.
Gamer4Life @ Jun 15th 2009 10:19PM
That is a really mature thing to say in a world where talking smack about competitors is common place.
NintendoJunkie @ Jun 15th 2009 11:17PM
If you guys haven't already read it, I HIGHLY recommend you check out "Masters of Doom". I found it to be an AWESOME book...it really gives you insight into how id got started & their associations w/ other gaming companies in the 80's & throughout.

Sooo, is he saddened about Duke Nukem dieing forever?
Or is he Going to be sad forever, because of Duke Nukem dieing?
Or is he going to be sad that Duke Nukem Forever is dieing?
J.Goodwin @ Jun 16th 2009 7:03AM
But they didn't have a cheat code to increase them five fold.
