PopCap's $1 Peggle sale on App Store a hit, specials for other titles 'TBD'

PopCap's Peggle sale on the App Store was clearly another blow to the productivity of thousands (millions?) of lost souls. A representative for the publisher told us, "We sold nearly as many units in the three or four days of the sale as we did in the preceding three weeks." MTV's Multiplayer takes note of the deeper politics of the App Store sale and Peggle's success, which saw the app move on the sales chart from #60 to to #1 during the sale.
PopCap tells us it's still trying to determine what the right price is for games on the iPhone/iPod Touch, expressing that the "App Store is still kind of an experimental arena or environment for anyone who is making products there." When asked if the company plans a similar sale for any of its other highly addictive titles, we were informed that's still "TBD."

I grabbed some crack last night for 99 cents. Man, I'm half tempted to purchase more for 800 Microsoft Points.

This was the only reason I got it... but I can certainly tell you that it is an excellent game. Sadly, my iPhone attention span doesn't last that long, so for me $1 is pretty much a no-brainer price point.
Now put the Sims on sale...

The App Store market place is a strange beast. It's perhaps the only time complaining enough on the internet works. I've seen games drop in price merely because enough people on iTunes deemed the game "not work the price".
Can you imagine if that worked on retail games for the PS3 or 360? We would see games like Wolverine Uncaged go for budget price in weeks! I'm sure Raven's sales would benefit greatly as well. I know I'd buy it for 30 bucks.

You can't argue with $1 price point. Even at $5, I probably wouldn't play it enough, or my iphone in general, to justify it.
At 1$, if I play it one, it's worth while.

I don't see why other companies don't realise that if you sell your games cheap then a lot more people buy them.
The Baron @ Jun 15th 2009 7:46PM
Exactly. The Steam sales are proof of that - game sales can increase 3600% when they are dropped to half price. But you're still making 1800% more money!
On a slightly related note, who decided that Prototype on PC should cost £35 in the UK? Is it because Prototype is £10 better than every other game? I think not.
Nomi @ Jun 15th 2009 5:50PM
I was the one of the people that bought it...played it continuously till I finished the Adventure mode.
Kael @ Jun 15th 2009 6:02PM
They got my $1.
Bearxor @ Jun 15th 2009 6:03PM
I bought it for 5, simply because i hadn't owned a copy and the one i had on my computer was a "trial".
I think $2.99 would be the sweet spot for games like this on the app store. At $3, I would buy the two other Popcap games, Bejeweled and Bookworm.
In fact, I just noticed Bejewled is already 2.99. App store here i come!
sorensilk @ Jun 15th 2009 6:19PM
I know I bought it at the $1 price point and beat the Adventure mode already. I loves me some Peggle. NOW GIMME PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES ON THE IPHONE TOO!!

Drugs and alcohol have ruined my life.

I was one of those who just bought peggle for $1 dollar. And while I can sort of see where the addictive nature of the game comes from I don't feel that it has justified the amount of popularity that it has gotten. Clearly though for the 99 cents i spent Im not to upset one way or another and I think that is the secret to it as well.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 16th 2009 4:21AM
Peggle became my first paid-for app. If this sale trend continues, my iPod Touch will soon be laden with awesomeness.
