FYI - There's no deckbuilding in DotP. Just saying in case it's a deal breaker for you.
On the plus side it has a co-op campaign.

How can you have a CCG game with no deck building? What the hell?

Apparently, you can only tweak preconstructed decks... which is completely idiotic.

How does it work/play then? I wanted to pick it up but now... I'll wait for a in-depth explanation on how this works ;)

This game is built around deck building, this guy doesn't know what hes talking about.

You travel around the world and duel enemies for cards, you can buy cards at shops, you can find cards in treasure chests. This game is all about building a deck.

He's never played it long enough to realize, of course you start with a deck that you didn't build. BUt you can change the entire deck to whatever you want as you win/find/buy cards.

Don't listen to this guy hes VERY confused.

Sorry Im the one who doesn't know what hes talking about, the OP is right, even though this game is named the same as a game in the past, its nothing like it.

You can check the preview on IGN for a description:

LAME. Sorry to the OP.

Wait, now I'm confused. I thought this was a straight-up card game, not a rehash of the PC game that had you walking from town to town fighting foes and collecting cards.

I wish it was a remake of the old Shandalar game! That would be AWESOME!

Apparently in this game you play a series of games vs some npcs and unlock their decks as playable. There's special challenges and other stuff you can do to unlock additional cards for the deck and (with pre-assigned cards they swap out for).
But it has full online play for up to 4 player FFA, as well as two-headed giant (and a two-headed giant campaign).
You can mail in for a special foil if you get it, though.

From what I've read, there is limited deckbuilding. As you play through the single player campaign and also complete the Challenges, you obtain additional cards you can use to replace certain cards in the pre-made decks.

I say 'certain' because apparently most of the cards are 'locked in' and cannot be changed, but a percentage (reportedly 17 - which is about 42% of a 40-card deck, 28% of a 60-card deck) can be swapped out for these earned cards.

Seems like it's going to limit a lot of the imagination and strategic design that has always been the most enjoyable part of Magic.

But all in all - they're still trying to charge in-print prices for their Magic Online game, so $10 for a 'decent' online Magic title is a far better deal to me than having to re-spend all my 'play money' like I did in high school for their Online client. None of my friends I used to play Magic with like doing the paper version anymore, so maybe this will be a good compromise.

The game still sounds OK, even with limited deck building. It's been a while since I played Magic IRL so sold, I guess.

They're trying to keep the game from being a mess for new players, which is what it would be with unlimited deck building options. I wouldn't be surprised if that, after it's been out for a while and has gotten some expansions, that they release something to give more freedom.

I have Duel of Planewalkers on PC (it's a VERY old game), and yes, it has deckbuilding. Like the reply above said, you have to acquire cards as you play (no real money involved in this game) to build your deck.

I wondered if they've updated the cards though, because I think the original game only has up to Urza's Legacy series or something like that.

I really want Magic and at that price I'm going to try it out. But the whole point to the card game is deck creation, so we'll see how much the game hinders that.

2 things:

1. MtG duels of the Planeswalkers is a great game! I still have my copy of this on my computer desk because I get a hankering for it every once in a while. THe original game had huge AI flaws, like the AI opponent casting harmful spells on itself because it wanted to use them and it was the only legal target, but its still a blast to play.

2. Mtg: Battlegrounds the action game released for the original Xbox PS2 and PC, was a FANTASTIC GAME! I enjoyed that game more than any other game that year...I only wish it had taken off so we could have gotten a real expansion rather than the crap expansion that was thrown together at the very end of its life.

...on with the show...

I was refering to the original MTg: Duels of the plainswalkers. They apparently took the name but this game doesn't resemble the original at all. My enthusiasm was directed to the original game, not this 'remake'.

I believe the original game you're thinking of was just called "Magic: The Gathering". It was fantastic though, I feel like it really got it right and I haven't played another Magic game since then that felt so good.

Yes! Magic! I know the deckbuilding is gimped (it's more like tweaking existing decks than deckbuilding) but the presentation looks nice and I really just want to scream "COUNTERSPELL, BITCH!" over my headset over and over.

Just kidding. Kinda.

Word of the wise, an expansion pack is already constructed for MTG. Unleashes 5 new campaign duels, and like 8 more challenges. I think it's about 500 points right now.

Ah. Nickel and Diming is what WotC has learned to perfect, why stop now.
I miss the old days where you *chose* to spend a ton of money on Magic. Now it seems you must, in order to have a decent experience.

Sadly, that's not to say I wouldn't purchase an expansion, but that's also because we're talking about actual content (I'm especially interested in the Challenges).

Anyone Remember the Pokemon TCG for the gameboy color? God that game was fun.

I need a new game like that in the XBLA.

It really is too bad M:TG turned to crap soon after Hasbro bought it. Now there's too many "special" abilities. Keep it to just X-walking, trample, and flying plz!

With that said, I wonder if there's any possibility to an expansion pack to this game for those of us old school players that want to use Moxes, Lotuses, and the like...

Damn though, I spent so much £ on Magic cards when I was a kid, and it killed me how rapidly the values dropped once the set rotated out of type2... (with a few notable exceptions obviously).

There's no way I'm not picking this up but I really REALLy hope that the DLC won't be too much of a gouging. I guess each DLC won;t add many cards but hopefully by carefully choosing which ones to put in each dlc will shake up the metagame enough to keep it feeling fresh. Does anyone know which edition it's based on/ have a spoiler list?

Also, I support the limited deck-building idea, I'm sure they've done it to allow for a decent metagame even with such a limited number of cards (Small pool means one deck more likely to dominate) as well as to prevent new players from being their own worst enemy (something anyone who remembers their first FNM event will appreciate)

Man, I haven't touched magic in years but just hearing this news and talking about it has me tap tap tapping in my head. Can't wait for this game - hours/cost ratio is going to be the best on XBLA yet!

Somehow Rocket Riot was not mentioned in the weekly XBLA announcement. While this makes us sad, the folks at Codeglue and THQ hope you give Rocket Riot a try. Many hours of wailing and gnashing, crying and frolicking(?) went into the game. With that said please let us know what you think when the game goes live this week! We'll be reading your comments, offering tips, and playing online. Hope to see you there!
