Don't want to pony up the $8 to download
Burnout Paradise's premium "Legendary" cars? Well, here's a cheaper alternative: buy
Big Surf Island for $13, as it includes special
toy versions of all four
DLC cars. You can get a cute mini version of the hovering 88 Special (pictured above), Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and GT Nighthawk by completing various tasks around the new
Burnout island:
- Toy Hunter Cavalry Bootlegger - Jump from all 15 Island Mega Jumps
- Toy Jansen P12 88 Special - Hit all 45 Island Billboards
- Toy Carson GT Nighthawk - Complete all 24 Island Road Rules (Timed & Showtime)
- Toy Hunter Manhattan Spirit - Hit all 75 Island Smashes
We'll admit that we were too cheap to pay for the Legendary DLC, but with a little bit of skill, we'll be able to drive our own
Ghostbusters-inspired car in no time.

Lets not forget about the trophies... Since these cars are classed as 'toy' cars, you can also get the toy car trophies with them. These don't however count as each of the legendary cars, so you won't be able to get those. Still, thats another silver and bronze for you trophy hoes out there. ;-)
Andrew Yoon @ Jun 15th 2009 12:20PM
Wow, good to know!
tmmoore_nc @ Jun 15th 2009 12:24PM
There are only 12 Road Rules in Big Surf Island in order to get the Nighthawk Toy Car because Cars in Burnout Paradise do not abide by the day/night cycle like Bikes do.
tmmoore_nc @ Jun 15th 2009 12:25PM
stupid me and my blurry vision in the morning
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 15th 2009 12:29PM
The back to the future car also makes that 4.5 second ski jump trophy easy too. I had already gotten it by accident (did the jump without knowing it was a trophy :P). If you jump it in hover mode you can get 6+ seconds at least.
capt_carl @ Jun 15th 2009 1:30PM
I got that Achievement with the Dust Storm Superturbo on my first try.
Wiizer @ Jun 15th 2009 12:34PM
Now, if there was just an easier away to get all 500 of those freeburn online challenges done for that diamond-encrusted Jansen P12...
Nacho @ Jun 15th 2009 12:37PM
I'm trying to figure out on what planet is paying $13 a cheaper alternative than $8.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 15th 2009 12:41PM
It was a poor choice of words. It's not cheaper, but it's a better value. Pretty sure all you get with the $8 are some cars, but the $13 will get you 9 cars, a new island and all that good stuff.
Andrew Yoon @ Jun 15th 2009 12:42PM
Cuz that $13 includes a brand new island.
Nacho @ Jun 15th 2009 12:48PM
Well of course you get more for $13 than you do for $8.
That doesn't change the fact that it's still not a cheaper alternative at all.
News flash:13>8. All day long.
D_Average @ Jun 15th 2009 1:08PM
"I'm trying to figure out on what planet is paying $13 a cheaper alternative than $8."
Who's in charge of blocking comments around here and what are they drinking? This comment was completely relevant to the story. Pull that Joystiq out of your ass already guys.
Brian @ Jun 15th 2009 12:41PM
Wait, I'm confused. You get the toy versions of the legendary cars?
Andrew Yoon @ Jun 15th 2009 12:42PM
Yes.
Brian @ Jun 15th 2009 12:48PM
I jizzed....
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 15th 2009 1:07PM
gross..
Derek @ Jun 16th 2009 12:06PM
Wow u must have no life if u jizzed over a video game
iFester @ Jun 15th 2009 12:46PM
If it's not called Micromachines, it's not the real thing.
Mazrael @ Jun 15th 2009 2:12PM
Burnout sure feels like Micro Machines to me
Lustis @ Jun 15th 2009 12:53PM
I bought this game about two weeks ago and can't stop playing it. I've got over 35 hours into it easy. I haven't bought Big Surf because I still have a few things to unlock first. Then I'll move on. Still though, that's awesome. I love unlocking cars
Nacho @ Jun 15th 2009 1:18PM
I honestly don't understand how mentally deficient you'd have to be to downvote my comments.
Paying $13 for something is not cheaper than paying $8. Fact. Yes, you may get more for your $13, but that's not what the article says. It says "a cheaper alternative" That's wrong. No disputing this.
Go ahead and downvote this comment too, but it doesn't make it any less true. And it doesn't make the people who do so any less of an idiot.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Jun 15th 2009 1:22PM
Yes. Buying Big Surf Island and unlocking the cars is cheaper then buying Big Surf Island and buying the cars.
$13+$8 > $13 > $8
See. It's easy to understand.
STFU already. I don't need 50 exactly same comments from you. You got downvoted twice, don't repeat yourself the third time. Jesus.
Nacho @ Jun 15th 2009 1:25PM
Wow. There really are some winners on here. Of course 13+8>13>8. Lets just throw some more random numbers out there too. 43>23>4>0
Wow. it all makes sense now. Thanks for showing me the light.
LegendaryPhoenix @ Jun 16th 2009 3:31AM
People are down voting your comments, because you are acting like an ass and taking what was a bad choice of words way too seriously. Get a life you douche.
AerialAngel @ Jun 15th 2009 4:08PM
Actually its cheaper if you get more out of the 13$ then the 8$.
Yes 13 > 8
But lets say you go to walmart and you can buy a 12 pack of soda for 8$.
now lets say you go to another store which sells a 36 pack of soda for 13$.
Which is cheaper? the 36pack of soda. But why if it costs 5$ more ? Well thats because you get more out of the 13$ then the 8$. If you bought 3 packs of soda, That would make a 36 pack. But it would cost you 24$ because you bought them individually. So buying the 36 pack which costs 13$ would actually be cheaper.
Its a cheaper alternative to buy the 36pack. Just like how it is a cheaper alternative to pay the 13$ for the surf island pack and get the cars. then to pay 8$ for the legendary cars and not get the island.
Alex @ Jun 15th 2009 1:19PM
I haven't played Burnout Paradise in quite some time, are there lots of people playing in multiplayer still?
spikeylee @ Jun 15th 2009 2:25PM
yup! just started playing it again last week after a long hiatus and didn't have a problem finding a game to connect to. also, it seems that players are more actively doing the challenges now, whereas when I originally got the game like a year ago, there was a lot of them just aimlessly driving just trying to smash into others.
Rafael @ Jun 15th 2009 1:25PM
i sold my game and after cops and robbers was launched im thinking of getting this game again... too many nice dlcs... worth !?!?!?
capt_carl @ Jun 15th 2009 1:41PM
When I saw the toy 88 Special in my junkyard, I squee'd. The toy GT Nighthawk helped my finally get the 20x Boost Chain Achievement.
All that's left for me is the Annihilator Street Rod, and whatever the other car is that I don't know about.
Mazrael @ Jun 15th 2009 2:17PM
I used the slowest 'speed' car, got the boost going a low speed, on the motorway, the incoming lane, and held down the brake. the car goes a bit mad, turning side to side, but keep it under control, giving the other cars a wide berth. bonus is you don't need to worry about spawned cars so much
Mazrael @ Jun 15th 2009 2:19PM
...Just make sure you pass close enough to get 'near misses'
Khaled @ Jun 15th 2009 1:48PM
I'm going to blockbuster right now to buy my PSN card for this, BF 1943, and Fat Princess.
Khaled @ Jun 15th 2009 4:08PM
So I've been playing it for about an hour and I got to tell you its very fun.
Mazrael @ Jun 15th 2009 2:27PM
I thought Criterion were going to add a few chieves, since it goes to 1750 now.. and they add a measley 5...
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 15th 2009 3:12PM
i just got 3 $20 PSN cards yesterday... bought burnout paradise, the legendary cars, the time savers pack (i know, i know, but i don't put as much time into burnout as i do other games, so i needed it to be able to compete with friends), and the toy krieger WTR. it's great fun online. but then i joined this open freeburn and everyone was on big surf island. i had to sit by the bridge doing donuts in my toy WTR. :(
Tim Parsons @ Jun 15th 2009 4:29PM
mm this topic is dumb. These aren't the Legendary cars, just their Toy versions Big frikcing difference. Personally I think they got lazy with the cars. It should have been more unique Island/vacation themed cars , not just different version of cars alreayd in the game. The only Unique new car is the Dust Storm/Superturbo
Trophies for the Island r too easy I had them all and 100% on the License in under 8 hrs of total play time(and more then half of that was playing around without trying at all)
Damn Would love that Diamond P12 but all 500 online damn. Maybe I'll just get that DLC that automatically gives you ALL Cars availible in the games
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 15th 2009 6:08PM
the unlock code doesn't give you the cars in big surf island. so no diamond for you.
Tim Parsons @ Jun 15th 2009 6:50PM
@ Sly
I was under the impression it unlocked ALL cars Provided you have the DLC associated with the cars and I already have all DLC so I think it would, but I'm not gonna bother trying
belovedconsole @ Jun 15th 2009 11:37PM
That's amazing. Still: have you heard of an entity known as a 'girlfriend'?
Tim Parsons @ Jun 15th 2009 4:15PM
No tax on Gift Cards. Tax goes into effect at the time of purchase. And yes the PStore has tax, if you think it doesnt you've obviously never used it b4.(it does in Ontario Canada anyway)
Tim Parsons @ Jun 15th 2009 4:16PM
damn wrong topic need eyes checked lol
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 15th 2009 6:07PM
actually, i bought a ton of stuff yesterday and there wasn't any tax. i live in the states.
Deaddy @ Jun 15th 2009 4:26PM
They aren't free, you paid for them as part of the $13 price tag. And I consider this post a spoiler, glad I already unlocked the before I read it.
Tez @ Jun 15th 2009 5:54PM
Ditto. These cars were an awesome surprise, I think this is kind of a lame move on Joystiq's part. Were they hurting for stories today or something?
belovedconsole @ Jun 15th 2009 11:36PM
This is not a lame move, I'm ready to buy the island now, whereas before I was on the fence. I want the toy hover car, and I'm willing to earn it. Pretty excited about a weekend of fun for the price of a 2-hour movie.
Nacho @ Jun 15th 2009 4:36PM
AerialAngel, you should take all the savings you made from buying all that soda and invest in a dictionary, because you clearly don't have a clue what the meaning of the word 'cheaper' is.
Tim Parsons @ Jun 15th 2009 5:01PM
AerialAngel is referring to Value for your money, but yeah your right $13 is still not cheaper then $8, it's just a better value
Emma @ Jun 20th 2009 10:16PM
Dear God, Nacho give it a rest already! So it was a bad choice of words! Chill out! And the Island is totally worth the $13 and even if I didn't know about the Toy Lengendary Cars, I'm very happy that I bought the full sized ones for $8. Criterion really outdoes themselves with DLC value and I think you should just stop beating up them and other posters.
Nacho @ Jun 20th 2009 10:22PM
Wow. Reviving a days old argument with "give it a rest".
You're not the brightest bulb in the 2-pack are you?
And show me where I "beat up" on Criterion.
Actually, don't show me anything. I'd prefer it if you kept your stupid mouth shut from here on out. I haven't seen anything come out of it thus far that indicates even a small amount of intelligence.
Slashee the Cow @ Jun 15th 2009 7:46PM
The Toy Bootlegger's horn is awesome.
Just needed to say it.
