Bethesda brings Oblivion, Morrowind, Call of Cthulhu to Steam
Steam users, know that Bethesda has just unloaded three of its top titles onto the service. Starting today, users can download The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Game of the Year edition). Adding further incentive is a 20% discount on these titles, valid this week only.
Odds are you played both Elder Scrolls games already, but if you've yet to try the under-appreciated Call of Cthulhu, then we suggest you pounce on this. The hotel chase scene is an experience we'll never forget.

For those who haven't played it, the first half of Call of Cthulhu is awesome.
Heh @ Jun 16th 2009 9:19PM
As a pc gamer I highly suggest CoC. Great game. Think I'll pick up morrowind on the cheap, too.
sony boy @ Jun 16th 2009 9:19PM

Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 16th 2009 11:08PM

THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 16th 2009 11:31PM
Seen it. It was funny!
Blank-Mage @ Jun 17th 2009 1:40AM
I can't believe the word "funny" was just used to describe something relating to Cthulhu.
Courtney @ Jun 17th 2009 2:18AM
I actually caught that episode, was shocked and happily surprised to find Cthulu mixed in with children's programming. Brilliant episode too.
dextro @ Jun 17th 2009 5:55AM
Roll a hundred sided dice to find out how many people die... the rest of the hundred just go insane... Most cahotic RPG ever written :P
Doombot (zuburi) @ Jun 16th 2009 9:24PM
Are you able to use user-created content (mods) with the Steam versions of games? Fallout, Oblivion, etc.?
rallion @ Jun 16th 2009 9:39PM
Usually. With Fallout 3, you can. I expect that you can with Oblivion as well, which is probably why you were asking.
I'll snag that one, and maybe come back and confirm that. I played it a little bit, but couldn't get into it. It really deserves another shot,
deanb @ Jun 16th 2009 10:44PM
Yeah, I've just come off after heading through the tunnels, I stuck a fair few mod's on n it worked ( they even automatically found Oblivion in the Steam folder)
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Must_Have_Mods - get the good stuff here.
Einhanderkiller @ Jun 16th 2009 10:48PM
Steam versions of games are basically the same thing as retail versions of games. They use the same folder structure, have the same files, etc. There's just some extra stuff added in to work with Steam. The only thing that might be different is DRM. Some games, like The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, that have DRM like SecuROM at retail have it removed when they're put on Steam.
Foetoid @ Jun 16th 2009 9:28PM
Argh. I just bought Oblivion GOTY Edition and now everyone is saying CoC is a great game. Anyone wanna gift it to me, my Steam ID is the same as my username here ^
Foetoid @ Jun 17th 2009 2:55AM
LOL. A man cant even ask for a handout without getting voted down. I guess i wont bother with the game then.
Joe @ Jun 16th 2009 9:30PM
Oblivion FTW. I'm just going to throw it out there... Oblivion is way better than Fallout 3... Sorry I just had to get that off my chest. :)
AoE @ Jun 16th 2009 9:57PM
And both are pale and weak compared to Morrowind :)
deanb @ Jun 16th 2009 10:51PM
I think Fallout 3 was slightly more polished and better looking(if you could call nuclear wasteland better looking), but Oblivion was definitely more open and much styles of playing the game. And it had a crap load more quests, though none of those had Liberty Prime :(.
Morrowind I've not played, And I think it's a bit late to go back n try it out, even Oblivion is starting to show its age, but I am uber-hyped for TESV, I want Oblivion, with Fallout polish n more variances n landscape, and Mass Effects conversation system, rather than the ram rod stare i get.
Hammer @ Jun 17th 2009 10:36AM
Oh, I am so glad someone understands how much better Morrowind is than Fallout 3 or Oblivion. The only thing that doesn't hold up are it's graphics, which are easily fixable with a mod. You will not find a more immersive game than Morrowind. Ever.
What happened Bethesda!?!
AoE @ Jun 17th 2009 3:28PM
@deanb,
As Hammer said, graphics can be updated with mods (not entirely to current standards, but good enough unless you require top-notch graphics only) and otherwise it's still the most open, fully realized, immersive game ever. I've spent something in excess of 800 hours playing it.
cylet @ Jun 16th 2009 9:33PM
is cthulhu even in call of cthulhu?
Doctor John Smith @ Jun 16th 2009 9:54PM
It is my understanding that the video game "Call of Cthulhu" is based less upon the short story "Call of Cthulhu" and more upon the short story "A Shadow over Innsmouth"
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 16th 2009 10:06PM
No my dark god is not in the game. Father Dagon and Mother Hydra are. Yes it pretty much is Innsmouth.
CloudStrife @ Jun 16th 2009 9:41PM
I highly agree Joystiq, Call of Ktulu is an amazing song...
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 16th 2009 10:00PM
agreed
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 16th 2009 9:50PM
Call of Cthulu is buggy as hell, it's difficult to finish even if you can figure out what is going on. Do not buy.
I tried to play it along with the guys on 1UP FM. Not only are some parts really non-obvious to figure out (which I can kind of tolerate) but at one point I literally couldn't get through, I would do what gamefaqs said I needed to do and it never worked. And I'm far from alone. On 1UP FM, several people also had problems like this at other spots and had to resort to downloading save games of spots past the bugs from the net.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 16th 2009 10:07PM
lolz. 1up. Yeah the game is hard as shit, but if you like Lovecraft its a no brainer.
superklye @ Jun 16th 2009 10:57PM
WHOA WHOA WHOA
Pardon me, LS2, but I thought you just said Bethesda released a game filled with BUGS?
YOU BITE YOUR TONGUE YOU SLANDEROUS SON OF A BITCH.
Those aren't bugs...they're "Gameplay Enhancements" and they include them FREE OF CHARGE.
Doctor John Smith @ Jun 16th 2009 9:59PM
My videocard is apparently the following:
Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset
I know that's too horrible for either Obvlivian or CoC, but can I run Morrowind?
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 16th 2009 10:08PM
yes
Jack @ Jun 16th 2009 10:10PM
@Dr. John Smith, MD:
I can run Morrowind on an MSI Wind that has the Intel GMA 945/950... so you really shouldn't have too much trouble. I think at the most you'll have to play at a lower resolution, so no biggy.
Doctor John Smith @ Jun 16th 2009 10:24PM
Awesome. Thanks guys, buying Morrowind now then, and Oblibian, CoC whenever I get a new laptop.
deanb @ Jun 16th 2009 10:53PM
If your gonna get Oblivion get it now if you have the monies while it's on sale, just download it on your new laptop later.
Doctor John Smith @ Jun 16th 2009 11:52PM
Well, as Dalek Prime can verify, I can just come back to now later and buy it when I've gotten both more dollars and a laptop that can play it.
Joe @ Jun 16th 2009 10:08PM
Well I never played Morrowind but it looks like nothing compared to Oblivion.
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 16th 2009 10:37PM
Oblivion had 2 things better than morrowind: combat and the compass. morrowind was a better game in every single aspect. (graphics obviously dont count)
Morrowind was a true "go anywhere kill anyone do anything" game. You didnt have loading screens at every freaking city, you had levitation magic, you could kill ANYONE, including quest/main storyline critical npcs. (it would give you a message after you did so though). Morrowind also had more area, more npcs, more dungeons, more items, more quests, more everything. I completed all of oblivion, shivering isle, knights of the nine, got max gamerscore on it, and did every quest i could find in under 200 hrs.
I put over 500 hours into my main morrowind character (roughly) and I still had a journal full of quests. Not to mention morrowind didnt have this gay "monsters leveling up" crap. Try to take on the final boss in morrowind at lvl 1, and youll die 10 minutes into the trip there. Oblivon is a dumbed down, casual verison of morrowind, and I was pretty disappointed in it, even though it was still great fun.
If you can take the time to learn morrowind, and deal with the sub-par combat, morrowind is simply a more "epic" game, and I mean epic in the true sense of the word. Its hard to start, but when you get to the point where you can kill the gods of the game, its simply an epic feeling.
Morrowind also has a big mod community around it to make it look prettier. If you liked Oblivion, please, for the love of the Emperor, pick up Morrowind, and give it a little paitence and time and love.
Ihavepants @ Jun 16th 2009 11:01PM
What mods have done with Morrowinds graphics is pretty amazing really. I'd say the only thing Oblivion has over Morrowind is the physics engine now. You can even have Oblivion style combat.
Check these out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDdovXgXrDY&feature=related
And it still runs better then Oblivion does on my PC.
Joe @ Jun 17th 2009 1:50AM
Morrowind looks so depressing to me though. IDk I might check it out, but if the combat sux im just gonna dump it.
xtremeholymuffin @ Jun 17th 2009 3:46AM
With those upgrades Morrowind seems like.....the......the.......ULTIMATE GAME!!!!
xtremeholymuffin @ Jun 17th 2009 3:47AM
But, it looks like I'll need quite some free time so I better finish all the games I'm playing first.
Joe @ Jun 17th 2009 2:52PM
Well Ive got Morrowind, (torrent XD) Ill try it out see if its any good. For those graphics enhancements does it majke the game alot harder to run?cuz i dont have that great of a gaming pc.
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 16th 2009 10:40PM
Whats that? I just posted a big rant? i dont give a fuck.
GO BUY MORROWIND OFF OF STEAM NOW! There is no excuse for anyone who has ever enjoyed an rpg for at least 10 seconds to not pick it up and give it a try.

Morrowind is in my top five games of all time. FACT. BUY THIS GAME.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 16th 2009 11:15PM
Morrowind is a great game. Highly recommended.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jun 16th 2009 11:32PM
When I played both morrowind and Oblivion, I felt like I didn't have enough guidance. I never knew what I suppose to do. I suppose my hand has been held with a lo t of other games, or perhaps I just didn't try to understand it.
Perhaps I'll play one over my holidays
Metoo @ Jun 17th 2009 1:21AM
I want to play Cthulhu on the 360, but I've heard it does not weird things like not play the background music.

Dash @ Jun 17th 2009 9:12AM
Are the CoC glitches gonna be patched? I'd read this game was unplayable on Vista.
Arashikou @ Jun 17th 2009 3:32PM
Yeah, the game doesn't work on Vista and pretty much can't be made to. Since the Steam system requirements specifically call out requiring Windows XP or 2000, I'm not holding my breath that they fixed any of the bugs in this release. :(
But at $11, it might be worth buying just to try. If I do, I'll report my findings here.
