MTV True Life looking for gamer addicts
"Have video games totally taken over your life? Is your game play increasingly getting out of control? Have your friends or family confronted you about your gaming habit? How about your marriage or personal relationships – are they being affected? Is it difficult to balance work and gaming time? Do you sometimes skip doing homework or household responsibilities to play? Have you played video games as a way of escaping your problems? Has your game playing habit become so encompassing that you may need to go to rehab to kick it? If you can identify with any of the above, MTV wants to hear from you." -- Actual MTV casting call, in verbatim.
While we agree video game addiction can be a problem, especially if it gets in the way of your social life, we doubt appearing on a MTV reality program is the best solution for shaking the habit. If you don't want your 15 minutes of fame, consider taking the Joystiq Two-Step Plan to Stop Playing Games™. Step one: buy Terminator Salvation. Step two: Play it. You'll learn to hate games in minutes! Pretty soon, you'll want to go outside and make friends -- all without the embarrassment of being on the same network as Tila Tequila. You can thank us later.

Levi @ Jun 16th 2009 11:27PM
lol... I'm putting myself through video game rehab this month. I don't need MTV.
Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) @ Jun 16th 2009 11:42PM
fuck off MTV
LameDuck @ Jun 16th 2009 11:43PM
MTV spent the 90's turning girls into whores and sluts, and now that we prefer video games over some tunneled out whore with the clap they're going to cash in on it.
Fuck you, MTV.
Balloonfighter99 @ Jun 16th 2009 11:44PM
ha ha, I'm a huge gamer myself. In fact I haven't eaten in weeks. Now everything looks like a game to me...It hurts so bad. I cannot blink ,I lost some teeth and hair. Talk about a marathon.
Balloonfighter99 @ Jun 16th 2009 11:46PM
I'm gonna lay down
WREturns @ Jun 16th 2009 11:47PM

CH3BURASHKA @ Jun 17th 2009 1:26AM
Which is ironically right below this one.
WREturns @ Jun 17th 2009 1:28AM
Ironically or conveniently? Or both?
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 17th 2009 11:50AM
HIYO!
james @ Jun 16th 2009 11:56PM
like airing this won't blow video game "addiction" out of proportion
Yatcho @ Jun 17th 2009 12:09AM
So...what does this have to do with music, MTV?
MystileArmor @ Jun 17th 2009 1:36AM
Like anything else on that damn network has anything to do with music anymore...
pibs @ Jun 17th 2009 3:42AM
It use to be Music Television now it is just Moron Television.
Zing!
BananaBoat @ Jun 17th 2009 12:22AM
I want to get on there and rick roll the pants off of them. I'll set up a WoW account beforehand, then I'll sit in my chair and play while they watch, all the while pretending that I'm addicted. Then, in my moment of glory, I'll push a secret switch under the table with my foot and confetti will stream from the ceiling, never gonna give you up will play, and my friends will burst into the room and dump Gatorade on all of us.
Nah, too much work for a video game addict, and besides, it's Skinemax time.
devilsei @ Jun 17th 2009 1:16AM
You do realize they'll just edit the whole screen out, and replace it with some generic video of an old-school raid to make you look like you are hardcore addicted, and when you do pull that, they'll just cut to something else.
Me? I'd lie my arse off. I'll tell them I'm hardcore addicted, and when they start talking to my friends about it, they'll get "Yeah he likes to hang out, talk, we play some Gears 2, watch a movie, or laugh our asses off to this comedian or that". Oh yeah, I'll even make sure my sisters and parents whenever they are in the shot are saying "yea he isn't addicted". That'll waste their time hehehe!
BananaBoat @ Jun 17th 2009 1:28AM
By the power of the internet, I'd have hidden cameras film the whole thing, then I'd get it up on Youtube before they had a chance to do anything. From there it'd seep out into all of the other social networks, and then a week or a month later, CNN would pick it up, and MTV would cry.
But again, I don't have that kind of free time. Actually, that is a damn filthy lie, it's summer, I'm not going on vacation until August, and I don't have any summer classes. I have all the time in the world.
Don't tell MTV...I don't want them to report on university students that spend all summer inside under the A/C going "AaaaaahhhhhHHHhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHH"
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 17th 2009 11:49AM
is that aaaaaahhhh in a soothing manner or AAAAAAHHHH THIS CHANNEL IS STILL AROUND!!!
devilsei @ Jun 17th 2009 7:21PM
Dark, I think thats an "aaaah" of realization, an "aaaaah" of:
"Oh my god... MTV is still alive and kicking... and is even recording me?! God they have dropped to a new low"
Which obviously MTV will edit in a video of someone playing Gears of War 2 and said person being raped mercilessly.
Kevin @ Jun 17th 2009 12:50AM
"Have you played video games as a way of escaping your problems?"
isnt that why we all play them? to have some time away from the stresses of everyday life?
Donald @ Jun 17th 2009 12:59AM
I'm still bitter that they didn't choose me to be "Made" into a ballerina, those tutu hating bastards.
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 17th 2009 1:00AM
A mute, crippled tila tequlia would make a good girlfriend. hmm
...Im a terrible person...
Tim @ Jun 17th 2009 2:33AM
Hmph, for the second consecutive time this week, another major network (this time Viacom) decides to bash video games.
PS36Wii Fanboy @ Jun 17th 2009 2:58AM
If I was ever cast on that Hellish show, I will purposely act like one of those gamers that know nothing of building electronics or any history of gaming before the PS2... you know those Madden People rofl. And be like that.
Then on the final episode I'll be like, "Ya that isn't me," Pull out an Atari 2600, and play ET saying that it is the best game ever made.
Thus pissing off the /v crowd, causing them to hack the MTV site destroying MTV which will then destroy Viacom.
HA ha this plan is foolproof I say!
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 17th 2009 11:48AM
Do it! FOR GREAT JUSTICE!!!
pseth @ Jun 17th 2009 8:54AM
while there is scant evidence that video games can be addictive, there are many people who feel they play too much and can't give it up. Whether this is because of the game or because of the person (or some interaction of the two), we don't know. But it is possible that MTV could give a fair and balanced presentation of game "addiction" and it could be an interesting show.
If anything they'll probably be softer on video games than any other network as they are invested in the video game industry.
VicViper @ Jun 17th 2009 9:12AM
Seriously, didn't they already do this episode like years ago?

I love Tsquared... That video was made when MLG was just getting big and Tom was a major dick. He's much more mature now, but it still made MLG look bad at the time.

"isnt that why we all play them? to have some time away from the stresses of everyday life?"
That's one of the pivotal reasons why I game, to use it as a form of escape from the more mundane aspects of my life, and to alleviate stress...although if you ask me after playing a few matches in SFIV, I'd question if I'm achieving the latter ;-)
Ninbrendo @ Jun 17th 2009 11:25AM
Empty-V
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 17th 2009 11:47AM
Wait, wait, wait. MTV, the channel for douchebag, popped collar, pink polo shirt, gatorade with vodka drinking teenagers, is concerned about people slacking off with their homework or chores? WTF?! Also, isn't one of the main reasons to play games, let alone movies, TV, plays, comics, books fucking anything to escape your problems? Fuck this channel.
GamingKnight @ Jul 10th 2009 3:18PM
Great post. Video game addiction is an important issue and it’s great that more people will be aware about it. Let me share this article.
