Over 11 million enlisted in Call of Duty: World at War

Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War has been quite the retail success for Activision, as Edge has revealed the game has sold a ridiculous 11 million copies across all platforms. And Activision is mighty proud, as the company's strategy of alternating development on the franchise has paid off. Add the success of the game's DLC, and you've got yourself one nice money-printing machine.

The Call of Duty name is very powerful all thanks to infinity Ward. I'm kind of worried people might over look Modern Warfare 2 because it doesn't have the Call of Duty name attached to it. Instead people are going to buy the shitty ones from Treyarch.

I agree. World at war was ok as a rental game, but after a few matches of online, i went back to COD 4 online. I'm completely desperate to get my hands on Modern Warfare 2, but as you said not many people will see the Call of Duty name and therefor they will blow it off as another game. Hopefully there's enough marketing to support the game for those uninformed people.

Whoa! Easy on the minus button! It's called an opinion folks. All I'm saying is that people are going to overlook Modern Warfare 2 because it doesn't have the Call of Duty name in the title.
I like Infinity Ward because they put a lot of effort into their games. Treyarch just took the COD4 engine, used the same COD4 formula, and just added a WWII skin to it. Good for you if you bought and liked World at War. I'm personally sick of WWII games and that's why I support Infinity Ward with my money. Because they innovate. You can't tell me COD4 didn't blow your mind.

What exactly occurred in CoD4 that was so innovative it blew your mind? I can honestly say nothing about that game "blew my mind".

@CannabisPrime:
1) The sound, score, and atmosphere. Everything put together made this an amazing experience. The explosions, the epic music, and the sounds of things like the guns, really gave me an adrenaline rush. I felt like I was really fighting and found myself thinking instead of just running and shooting.
2) The missions were very realistic. For example, do you remember the helicopter mission? Where you were behind the gun and had to take out those people? I felt that was amazingly well done. The sniper missions was another favorite of mine. Not only did I feel like a badass, but just feeling this kind of claustrophobic feeling. Being in the grass and looking around in case someone jumps out at you from no where. The coolest moment was when as the sniper, you had to take out a target that was very far away. You had to adjust for wind and the rotation of the earth. You see your bullet curves as it hits your target. Just one of the cool moments to be found.
3) The story had you actually caring this time. I cared about my character and wanted to know his story. The AI was amazing which added to their realism. My squad moved and acted like their real life counterparts. It made appreciate even more what it's like to be a soldier. The ending actually touched me. Seeing your squad getting shot and you laying injured on the ground not being able to do anything. It showed you the ugly side of war.
4) Have you played the game? That's the experience I got from playing COD4. These are the reasons why I didn't think Worl

Ah, touche. It's on three joystiq sites. I guess I just don't see why it wasn't put on the main joystiq site if it was gonna be linked to all three.

the only reason it sells is because of the zombies. i see no other reason to even try this game or any other call of duty games

Rick, It's far from the best co-op out there. It's missing a scaling amount of enemies (there should be more enemies for more human players), there's no limit on the amount of supports (Rocket strikes, 4 at once?) and every player can pick up the same weapon. Shouldn't it be first come first served?

Well, I like WW2 games and this is pretty fun on the Wii. Although I have not tried any multiplayer action, after Heroes 2...I don't want to be let down.
Great single player IMO. This si the first CoD title that I actually really like, 3 was not very good on the Wii.
One day I'll be able to afford a PS3, then I'll get to enjoy 4. One day.

I'm apparently one of the few here that likes World at War and Modern Warfare equally. On that note, I'm personally glad to see Treyarch on deck for the next Call of Duty and hoping the Cold War era theaters get used. I'd love to see their take on Vietnam and the rumored African setting.

You're not alone. I love both and don't know why people hate on WaW so much. I put over 500 hours into MW then went to WaW because I needed a change and love it as well. Recently, I went back to MW just to get back into the "modern" era because of the anticipation of MW2, but I'm honestly missing WaW. I'm happy as well that Treyarch will be back to fill the void in 2010 after I've played out MW2 for an entire year.
To defend WaW, I do find it ironic that there are so many haters out there yet it continues to be played by more people on XBL than MW and we see ridiculous sales stats like this. Successful and good games that sell well, are like successful movies. Word of mouth and positive buzz makes for big sales. A "crappy" game isn't going to sell 11 million copies.

Wow, like 670mil deniro off a game that was practically built off of Infinity Ward's hard work on CoD4. I'm just glad EA realized this and is willing to put out a game from IW every 2yrs and get out of the Word War rut Treyarch keeps bringing back.
