Review: Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Xbox 360/PS3)

Still, given Ghostbusters' rocky road to retail, I suppose we should be grateful that there's a game to complain about at all.
Gallery: Ghostbusters (360/PS3/PC)
To its credit, Ghostbusters gets the action right straight away, as wrangling ghosts with a positron collider while wearing an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on your back feels just as manic and haphazard as I'd imagine. Spooks dip and dive mid-air as you give chase, destroying most surroundings in satisfying fashion before finally roping them in and slamming them into the trap. In this way the game feels exactly as it should.
A weightless physics engine leaves the entire game world feeling as if it were made of Styrofoam.
|
The problem is that this entire experience is explored within the first few moments of gameplay. While Ghostbusters changes things up a smidge by adding a minutia of different weapons and upgrades, these do little to help keep the handful of hours it takes to complete this game from quickly disintegrating into tedium. The malaise is also punctuated by a difficulty curve that spikes like a PKE Meter on Halloween, and while those who tackle the game on its easiest setting will have little trouble making it through, more daring adventurers may have some trouble keeping their frustration contained. Just as with negative reinforcement on ESP ability, this game pissed me right off.
Bloodrayne-dev Terminal Reality's obvious zeal in tackling this storied license is commendable, though I can't say that this game has instilled me with much confidence in the studio's Infernal Engine. While Ghostbusters is billed as boilerplate for the cross-platform middleware, the bulk of the game's levels are poorly designed, punctuated with overlarge halls and stairways and a weightless physics engine that leaves the entire game world feeling as if it were made of Styrofoam.
But at least the game is funny, right?
The original Ghostbusters is one of the most quotable films this side of The Princess Bride, a benchmark this game fails to meet -- let alone exceed. Banter, while occasionally spot on, more often than not falls flat, and comes off like the actors doing impersonations of these characters rather than actually losing themselves in these iconic roles.
Nowhere is this more prevalent than in Bill Murray's portrayal of Dr. Peter Venkman, which is both stilted and charmless. Unfortunately this same description can just as easily be laid at the feet of the game's story, which fails to even measure up to the tepid Ghostbusters 2, complete with an ending that feels like a grapefruit forced through a straw.
All is not lost, however, with a handful of multiplayer modes that ensure Ghostbusters has at least a modicum of extended shelf life, though even these fail to save this game from being merely average. It's unfortunate, but maybe it was too much to believe that Ghostbusters would give the stigma that surrounds movie-licensed games a total protonic reversal. As it stands, there is some fun to be had, as well as a few chuckles. However, given that I've seen Ghostbusters more times than I care to admit, I don't expect to revisit this video game any time soon. Well, at least not until dogs and cats can learn to live together.

I'm picking my copy up on the way home tonight. Hopefully I have a better experience with it.....kinda nervous now though.
Ridgecity @ Jun 23rd 2009 9:53PM
The game is good even if you don't like the Ghostbusters.
If you like them: Holy f*ckin shit a good Ghostbusters game???? SWEEEET!!"
GiggMan @ Jun 16th 2009 1:17PM
That's definately one take on it.
PR0F3TA @ Jun 16th 2009 1:17PM
i know people who will buy this game based on the name Ghostbusters alone.
MLS @ Jun 16th 2009 1:35PM
Like me. Well... not buy it. Let's say if the game was laid at my feet right now, I'd rush to pick it up and play with gusto.
Looking forward to picking this up for a second hand price in the late fall, just like Punch-Out!!
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 16th 2009 1:17PM
"Ghostbusters is a passable, if largely forgettable game"
Hmm that sounds familiar....oh yeah, it's what I said yesterday (along with not being a AAA game) and I was flamed for it.
.
PR0F3TA @ Jun 16th 2009 1:21PM
people will downvote you just because you said something bad about the name Ghostbusters.
Daxoram @ Jun 16th 2009 1:31PM
Instead of just saying that; maybe you should try playing the game, take the time to think about it, and then write an articulate review of it. Then people might take what you have to say seriously.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 16th 2009 1:31PM
I have nothing against the name itself. I loved the movies when I was a kid. I just know a meh game when I see one and for some reason, even though I'm usually right, people still doubt my ability. Kind of frustrating.
GiggMan @ Jun 16th 2009 1:39PM
You don't know it's a "meh" game for sure. You just happen to agree with this guy.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 16th 2009 1:41PM
No of course I don't know for 100% fact, but I've gotten to the point where I can be about 90% sure. It's a talent I've picked up over years of playing games, I can pick out the junk and stick with sure buys. Seems the only thing that appreciates that talent is my bank account.
GiggMan @ Jun 16th 2009 1:50PM
Tmac is going to be known from now on as the "Swami" of video games.
Old Chris Berrman character.......... Older sports fans will get it.
TwEE @ Jun 16th 2009 1:52PM
Oh god tmac.. just stop already..
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 16th 2009 1:54PM
Berman's the man. The swami of video games...I quite like that idea!
WiredKnight @ Jun 16th 2009 1:56PM
What's frustrating is when someone tries to pass judgment on something they don't have any experience with.
Obviously we all formed our own predictions based on all the screenshots and previews we saw beforehand. But for you to come right out and say the game is poor without actually playing it gives your statement zero credibility, regardless if you're right or not.
That's why people doubt you. Not because of who your are, or your so called "abilities," it's just because you're criticizing something you don't have any experience with.
Matt @ Jun 16th 2009 2:30PM
Video Game quality soothsaying: the only psychic ability that will NEVER get you laid.
PedoJokerBear (aka Deeznuts) @ Jun 16th 2009 2:45PM
this article would be invisible if we had the power to downvote it tbh.
PR0F3TA @ Jun 16th 2009 2:53PM
Tmac's ability is to know good games, lol
Too many hours on inFamous too huh?
Etcee @ Jun 16th 2009 3:29PM
you're being downvoted, tmac, because of your ceaseless douche-baggery and cathedral sized ego when it comes to video games - not because of the opinions themselves.
Negativecool @ Jun 16th 2009 4:49PM
While I'll give Ghostbusters a try, I'll agree with tmac in so far as being able to assess a game's quality by coming to sites like this and developing an informed opinion about it.
You're telling me you can't watch previews for a movie and NOT have ANY idea if it's going to suck based on your preferences? The "you don't know that for sure" arguments are just frickin weak.
I mean seriously, we're all informed gamers here. If you haven't developed the ability to assess a game's quality, before actually playing it, through informed decision fueled by information from sites like Joystiq, then you're a fucking tard.

I just replied to what you said with a different opinion. It's not like your opinion or Dobson's opinion are the be all end all opinion for this game. Just go look at metacritic and you will see other reviews prasing it.
Someone having a different opinion is not the same as being flamed. If anything, you were the one flaming the game without a reason.
Nook @ Jun 16th 2009 6:36PM
exactly what I thought about this, said and proceeded to get downvoted. quite some time ago.
of course i ain't afraid of no ghosts, or their fans.
this will not be the AAA people were expecting.
Anticrawl @ Jun 16th 2009 6:49PM
I picked up a copy of the game and I love it. The story is classic Ghostbusters and all the humor is intact. It's a wonderful experience a gamer shouldn't miss; there really isn't anything like it on the market right now. It is considerably challenging on the Professional difficulty, something I as a gamer haven't experienced in a long while save Red Faction: Guerilla. The game is great on its own merits, but toss in the original cast and writer of Ghostbusters and you have a winner – especially for fans of the movies.
Chillski @ Jun 16th 2009 8:31PM
TMAC ur so amazing u guessed that a game was gonna be shitty and a game reviewer agreed with u ZOMG... do u want a cookie or a gold star or something???
Doug @ Jun 17th 2009 12:05AM
Wait, one person's opinion makes YOU right? So the major media outlets that gave it 8's out of 10's and 8.5's out of 10's can equally make your statement WRONG going by your logic.
You were logically flamed.
/topic.
Mazrael @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:36AM
I back Tmac on this.. I too can tell when a game is going to be meh.. like Too Worlds, Mirrors Edge & Too Human.. didn't stop me buying them.. I've even bought a odd stinker like Star Wars Unleashed..
I'm still interested in getting Ghostbusters though, when it turns up in Europe.. $100 (total) to import, sod that..
SecretAgentHam @ Jun 16th 2009 1:18PM
did you see a difference between the ps3 and xbox version, jason?
PR0F3TA @ Jun 16th 2009 1:23PM
flame war in...3...2...1...
Burns11 @ Jun 16th 2009 1:26PM
At this point it's not so much system vs system as system vs crappy developer. At this point we've seen too many games equal on both systems for any game to be lesser on one than the other, especially when part of the purported purpose of the game is to demonstrate a cross platform game engine.
SugarDaddy @ Jun 16th 2009 1:43PM
If you have both systems, just pick the system you like better and buy it for that. If not, then what the hell does it matter? Few games that exist on both systems are substantially different. This ps3 vs 360 nonsense just gets lamer and lamer.
SecretAgentHam @ Jun 16th 2009 1:45PM
well the reason i ask is because i pre ordered on the ps3 at gamestop for the free shirt, however i also own a 360. i havent heard of a credible source stating that the graphics really are as bad as they say. so before i give up my ps3 version and t shirt i want to know for sure that i'm making the right decision. i didnt ask for a flame war, they just always tend to happen. its just a bunch of people complaining about non sense that isnt important at all. stop complaining about games and play them!
Sean @ Jun 16th 2009 1:49PM
The PS3 version has noticiablly inferior textures. The developer really laid an egg on this one.
This site shows a really good comparison but it's getting hammered at the moment from everyone linking to the same article.
http://www.lensoftruth.com/?p=10974
What did everyone expect from the makers of Bloodrayne?
gib @ Jun 16th 2009 3:22PM
"i didnt ask for a flame war, they just always tend to happen."
...well, I didn't ask for a chlamydia outbreak, they just always tend to happen.
megapenguinx @ Jun 16th 2009 3:28PM
I'm actually curious in the Wii version. Wasn't that to be handled by a different team?
doom saber @ Jun 16th 2009 3:51PM
After readin the URL that Sean has provided, it is really the developers and not the system's fault in why the ps3 ver has inferior graphics. As it is said in that article, They limited the graphics on the ps3 version to make it the same as the 360 ver; the develoeprs said that because the ps3 has more processors,it can double the amount of textures on the 360, but decided not to make the two similar. However, the develoeprs did such a crappy j0b in doin' so.
Even though if I see this on sale for 15, I will get the pc ver.
Copland @ Jun 16th 2009 4:25PM
Yeah, I saw the link which Sean posted.
I'm really disappointed and decided not to buy this.
(I know I'm gonna get down voted, but just going to express my honest opinion.)
I don't know if its because of the resolution
or the less richness in color for the PS3 version,
but the PS3 version has less three-dimensional appearance.
It looks like other parts beside the main character are in 2D or something,
like a 3D art work pasted on a flat polygon as texture...
I know the PS3 has the abilities to achieve graphics like Kill Zone2.
Thats why I'm really disappointed.
Copland @ Jun 17th 2009 6:34AM
I found this article on this comparison.
http://www.n4g.com/News-347268.aspx
According to this page, the comparison was unfair.
http://www.lensoftruth.com/, used the pre-released copy of Ghost Busters.
If this is true, I wish the damn site would get sued by the company >:(
I remember seeing in someones comments that the demos going to come.
So I'll look at it with my own eyes.
Obie @ Jun 16th 2009 1:21PM
Who wrote this review? Walter Peck? :p
Well, I appreciate the candor, I will still give it a rental tho..

Doombot (zuburi) @ Jun 16th 2009 1:24PM
From what I've played, it is okay. This review seems to echo my thoughts so far.
Is it *really* funny? Well... I find myself saying "oh, I can see how that would be funny to somebody else." It reminds me of the "gentle comedy" bit on The Sarah Silverman Program.
MLS @ Jun 16th 2009 1:38PM
You invalidate any trustworthy opinions on comedy by citing Sarah Silverman.
avan @ Jun 16th 2009 1:24PM
not sure about this review, first day purchase for me anyway
uncle jesse @ Jun 16th 2009 1:25PM
This seems like a game that only Ghostbuster fans will get the most out of. I'm glad it was finally released and will probably try it out mainly because of the original talent involved. I'm guaranteed to get a little kick out of trapping ghosts along side the original Busters and hearing the old theme sing. Nice.
Off topic - The "grapefruit forced through a straw" just made me think of my sister who just had a baby. I'm an uncle now!
uncle jesse @ Jun 16th 2009 1:37PM
Anyone see any commercials/adverts for this? I see nothing!
WINterfang @ Jun 16th 2009 1:51PM
I saw the commercial, it was really cheesy xD.
