This wasn't actually playable @ E3 like Natal was, was it?

I believe all they had was their on-stage presentation. Dont quote me on that though. But if they did allow hands-on time with their motion controller, I dont think this spell-casting thing would have been there.

Well it seems to me if Sony was really serious about this motion controller it would have at least been playable at E3. Sure, they've been working on it for a while, but Natal is much more sophisticated and was PLAYABLE.

I look forward to these motion inspired games. But Natal is really more innovative.

Aww.. Serpy, did you get your wittle feelings hurt earlier? You never actually comment, you just reply with an insult. Such a big man you is. Not so much fun when the tables are turned are they?

Work on those reading skills as well. I've stated earlier I look forward to play the PSMC when it's out and I think it's going to bring in a lot of new gamers. The whole motion idea is great regardless of console.

el serp fails to see big picture.

Why had I not heard about this before? I'm pretty impressed now - sure I would've been salivating back then.

@Vidikron

im not faulting nintendo for anything, im saying its SONY's fault they didn't take advantage of this technology they developed a long time ago, and let nintendo claim the casual market. the only ones i was putting fault on was sony's marketing, i dunno why everyone is so quick to defend nintendo like i am bashing them for sony's faults.

now yea i was saying nintendo didnt create a lot of their ideas, like analog sticks, the motion controller, balance board etc, i just think they have good marketing.

@Naeem

i dont really count the dpad or shoulder buttons as some GREAT innovations. dpads they just took old arcade sticks, and made them flat so you could use just a thumb, and shoulder buttons, big whoop, they put buttons on the top for other fingers. if you wanna count those they you better count dual analog sticks and built in rumble for the dualshock, or CD's in PSone, sega saturn.

oh and when did dreamcast have an eyetoy? i know sega had some crappy camera that they were gonna let you upload pics into games with but nothing along the lines of eyetoy

Just because Sony repackages things that Nintendo invents doesn't make them innovators. Seriously, do you know anything about the evolution of control and gameplay in console gaming? Because you can pretty much lay that shit at Nintendo's feet.

atari had everything nintendo made, many many years before nintendo. thats all there is to it. im not trying to suck sony's dick, nor atari's, im just sick of idiots giving nintendo so much credit, the same kind of morons who act like halo was the first FPS game with online play and vehicles or something.

You may discount them as you've probably been using them your whole gaming life, but the d-pad was a big idea. Shoulder buttons, triggers, analog sticks, rumble were ALL things that hadn't really been done in accessible mainstream way until Nintendo did them. The PS3 controller is still just a SNES controller with 2 analogs stuck on the bottom and shoehorned motion controls, for fuck's sake. I'm sorry, but Sony is not an innovator, at least not with regards to gameplay. I just can't see a coherent argument that says otherwise.

Actually, it seems to me that the tech for the second video has to be quite a bit different. They are not just tracking in screen space, but in 3D space, and they are tracking the *orientation* of the controllers.

That's something I don't understand about the wands with spheres. A sphere is the worst shape for showing orientation. I would think they would need two spheres at the very least to show orientation, maybe one at each end of the controller. Since they don't have a setup like that, it makes me wonder if the tech they are demoing isn't using only visual data.

Has this been addressed elsewhere?

i think the spheres are for depth of field, but the controllers have the same gyroscopes as wiimote/sixaxis to record the tilt of it. so knowing the position in space, plus the tilt of the controller, it can show where it is and exactly what position it is in on screen.

You all know this isn't exactly the same technology Sony showed at E3 this year, right? When they were working on this stuff back with the PS2, they didn't have accelerometers in mind to track the orientation of the wand, just its position. It's essentially just an extension of the EyeToy's normal functions.

Nintendo's technology didn't rise from this stuff, Project Natal's did.

We enjoy our "intimidating" controllers. Leave them alone. Don't fix it if it isn't broken.

If a car is intimidating,i'll learn to drive it,not expect someone to make a Fisher Price version that's more accessible.

I'll repost this here for everyone to see. This is a Playstation Underground feature with more shots from Richard Marks' EyeToy tech demo (if somebody has the full thing please post it). You can see around the 1:03 mark that he has a colored stick that is being tracked in depth, contrary to what the introduction to this article says. It is not a perfect 1:1 tracking but pretty impressive still.

Keep posting these every chance you get Pat, eventually someone will realize how well designed Sony's Eye products are and learn how to use the existing tech for games. that people seem to think are only possible with "other" cameras.

This is everything the Wii should have been. Where they had actors doing the moves with the Wii remote, Sony just did tech demos showing it really is possible!
But I am not holding my breath quite yet - I made that mistake when I bought the Wii haha

They actually had that magic-wand demo in a disc from Official PlayStation Magazine. The main problem was trying to find a bright-colored object that would work with the damn thing.
