The Xbox 360 Arcade pack just got a
bit more useful. The mysterious
512MB Arcade unit seen yesterday is real! Microsoft confirmed to
Eurogamer that it has doubled the memory on the "Jasper" motherboard of the hard-drive-free system. However, of course, not all of that space will be available to the owner: "The Xbox 360 system software uses some of the included 512MB memory;" Microsoft's statement reads. "Less storage will be available to users."
The on-board storage was originally
introduced to house the New Xbox Experience upgrade. According to Microsoft, this extra storage doesn't portend any new functionality: "We want to offer consumers a bit more memory at the same low price so they can enjoy more experiences on Xbox LIVE."

Wow, the Arcade can finally do something the Wii has done from launch! ;)
This is good, I'm glad they continue to improve on their models without creating too many different choices on the shelves.

"Wow, the Arcade can finally do something the Wii has done from launch! ;)"
Ouch! :D
Duke @ Jun 18th 2009 12:52PM
Cause we know everyone is just playing catch up to the Wii when it comes to hardware...
vidGuy @ Jun 18th 2009 1:00PM
That's the point, Duke. As much crap as the Wii takes for having sub-standard hardware, it's pretty funny to think it was beating the 360 Arcade in internal memory.
The Baron @ Jun 18th 2009 1:03PM
Despite being more expensive and having MUCH lower specs on CPU, RAM and GPU?
Yeah, it's amazing that they managed to afford to put all that internal memory into the Wii..
vidGuy @ Jun 18th 2009 1:21PM
Yeah, cause 512MB is /so/ expensive! Wow, you guys really know how to tear apart light-hearted criticism.d
Duke @ Jun 18th 2009 2:19PM
No, I know Vid, I was laughing when I posted.
fikhl @ Jun 18th 2009 3:44PM
Come on fanboys, Arcade is a piece of junk, get along with it. Microsoft's 'Next-generation' console with no HDDs in 2009! Well done Microsoft, well done.
Zerokku @ Jun 18th 2009 11:29AM
Naturally, this happens a month after I buy mine.
-_-
WINterfang @ Jun 18th 2009 11:49AM
You and me brother, this sucks but hey I manage to get enough money to upgrade my Arcade to pro.
xbox420king @ Jun 18th 2009 11:56AM
Damn it and here i thought i had the latest jasper
Platinum_Skeet @ Jun 18th 2009 12:36PM
Meh great for me now I was just about to buy one for my car...=D
slimshady @ Jun 18th 2009 1:51PM
Yeah it's not so long ago I bought my new Arcade with 265MB, thinking it would be the best until maybe the end of this year.
maveric101 @ Jun 18th 2009 8:13PM
hey i got mine 'bout a week ago and got 256MB one. at least, other than that they have the newest internals (got it to replace my launch 360, which red ringed 2 months out of warranty, i fixed it, then died permanently 4 months later).
mikeisthegreatest @ Jun 18th 2009 12:25PM
Will this stop me from getting the RROD? If not then I don't care about this news.
Shagittarius @ Jun 18th 2009 11:33AM
It still gets the RROD, only now when you RROD the heat pops the new memory chips out of the board and erases all your saved games.
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 18th 2009 11:39AM
Yeah because who cares about more free storage?
The fact that its a jasper drastically reduces the chance for the RRoD.
vidGuy @ Jun 18th 2009 11:41AM
Buying any 360 that was manufactured in the last two years drastically reduces your chance of getting RROD. The fail rate is much lower - I've never actually seen a RROD on a 360 made since early 2007.
Prox @ Jun 18th 2009 11:50AM
I bought a brand new Elite (one of the "better", "safer" consoles) in September of 2007 an it Red-Ringed last week.
Cosmo @ Jun 18th 2009 12:13PM
I have an 360 Arcade unit manufactured in March of 2008. Purchased it in May 2008 and it E74'd in May 2009. A few days before that hardware failure happened, there were artifacts on the screen while playing a DVD movie.
Thankfully, the repair was very quick and easy. Still, they fixed the RROD and then the E74 happens instead.
Jez @ Jun 18th 2009 12:17PM
Yeah vidGuy as much as I wish that was true my Elite RROD last summer
vidGuy @ Jun 18th 2009 12:23PM
That blows guys. My roommates, brothers, and I have five 360s between us and none of them has had a problem over the last two years. It's just the roll of the dice I guess - I've heard very few people have problems with PS3s but mine died after only 2 months.
R (XBL: Esoteric Lord) @ Jun 18th 2009 12:27PM
My elite has broken 2x, once was the DVD tray, and another was a RRoD. I also have a pro unit under my bed that would probably RRoD if I could get it to last long enough without freezing. Sadly, thats out of warrenty now (launch unit) so no free repair for me.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 18th 2009 12:33PM
aye you guys when your 360 is switched out with a Refurb does the HDD have to reformat like it does on the PS3 or do you still have all your downloads and save files??
Duke @ Jun 18th 2009 12:51PM
You don't send them your HD. Remember, they just pop off the top.
Badboy1979 @ Jun 18th 2009 12:52PM
@ Chris D. -- I believe you don't have to reformat the hard drive... they recently came out with a tool that re-liscenses your content to your console.
FYI, you can also take you hard drive to a friend's house and hook it up to their console and you're DLC stuff will play as long as you're sign into XBL.
Prox @ Jun 18th 2009 2:52PM
@BadBoy:
You don't even have to take your hard drive. Whenever you sign in to Xbox Live on ANY console you can play your XBLA games. All that's required is a quick download of the game on the new/different Xbox.
Mr Khan @ Jun 18th 2009 11:34AM
Good for simplicity purposes. Yet diverse enough to allow users to upgrade, right?
WINterfang @ Jun 18th 2009 11:51AM
Worked like a charm for me, now my Arcade doesn't have anything to be jealous of their pro brothers, except the chrome disk drive but I got a bunch of free arcade games so it's all good.
Mark @ Jun 18th 2009 11:39AM
So if I were to get one of these at some point and just use my existing 120GB HD...what can I delete off of that hard drive?
pibs @ Jun 18th 2009 11:44AM
your gamesaves probably
ComicShaman @ Jun 18th 2009 11:48AM
All that porn. I mean... really, man, you're out of control.
PeterF @ Jun 18th 2009 12:23PM
You better not have anything important on the internal storage if you have external storage. If your console RRODs, you lose whatever you had in it! I would say any downloadable content and profile are the only things you should have on it since they can be redownloaded. Game saves are forever lost.
TravisO @ Jun 18th 2009 1:42PM
You did notice the article said 512MB not GB, it won't really change how you use your existing HD.
Antonio @ Jun 18th 2009 11:54AM
mmmmm I want to get a xbox and mod it.....should I jump for the arcade now? or go for the one with 20gb?
Preston @ Jun 18th 2009 11:57AM
They still make 360s with only 20gb of space? I thought 60gb was standard these days.
Mazrael @ Jun 18th 2009 12:04PM
Where have you been, kid... they don't make 20GB's anymore..
MarkHawk @ Jun 18th 2009 12:07PM
No more 20 gb. It's 60gb now. I suggest going to Dell and buying a Pro (60gb model).

Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 18th 2009 12:14PM
when you mod it doesnt it get banned from XBL?? whats the purpose of a modded 360??
Cosmo @ Jun 18th 2009 12:37PM
Believe it or not, not everyone has to play games online, I guess I'm one of the rare people that only plays single-player games. So people have modded 360's to play copied or pirated games.
Optimaximal @ Jun 18th 2009 12:37PM
The mods these days either detect an XBL connection and hide/disable themselves or they have a switch to manually do it (basically meaning any tool connecting to the service with the mod switched on is asking for trouble).
NeilNaS @ Jun 18th 2009 1:17PM
@ Optimaximal
The DVD drive flashing that is the most popular way of flashing, is completely undetectable, I've seen my friend who has the mod play the newest games and still keep his 60k of gamer score, so you're wrong.
Antonio @ Jun 18th 2009 1:29PM
Yes, I've been doing lots of research and the dvd drive flashing mod its the safest one and people still able to play games online and stuff.
MarkHawk @ Jun 18th 2009 11:56AM
Sigh... Time to start looking at manufacture dates again on Xbox 360's at Best Buy...

Are the Arcade models made so you can install a hard drive later?
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 18th 2009 12:12PM
yes....I mean its going to cost you like $100+ for 60GBs but you have the option...
nehal @ Jun 18th 2009 2:46PM
Well what i would do is buy a arcade off dell 15 percent off coupon. Then go on eBay and you get a 20 gig hard drive for $27. It ends up coming up around 197 for the whole thing. Which is about 100 dollars cheaper than buying a 60 gig model.
Cal @ Jun 18th 2009 11:57AM
I wonder if these 360s having the NXE stored on the on-board flash chip makes them perform any better
Shimrra @ Jun 18th 2009 11:57AM
Not bad.
