@Chris

I think you're talking about something completely different. He's just talking about manufacturing costs. His theory basically being that 512 MB chips are likely in higher production than 256 MB chip thus making making 512 MB chips cheaper for MS to put into the system.

oh I know what he is saying about cost getting cheaper, I'm just saying that HDD cost then werent that bad, and 8GBs for a HDD in a game console wasnt even that bad at all sense XBL wasnt then what it is now, most people just modded it and ripped games straight to the HDD

The previous model Arcade is now $149 at Walmart (Canada) - looks like they're clearing out the old ones. Starts this Friday.

redflagdeals com
It's a Walmart deal so you can only get it there. redflags is just a Canadian site to go to see what deals are out, coupon codes etc. (I'm just a user)

I just bought it at Superstore (no tax weekend and price match) the thing didn't come with onboard storage which is a pain, just a 256mb card. the update aparently takes 128mb. is that enough left to save some games? I have a PS3 which is for my movies and music so all i need is space to save disk based games

The Wii, has very small saves, I haven't even got through a quarter of my Wii memory.. the 360 harddrives fill up fast.. that 512 won't last long..

I don't get why only 512 though, just on terms of flash drives, I can get a 4GB stick for £10, if they threw more in now, it'd save this slow roll out.. they still need to throw out a decent HDD, I bounce between several games, with the installs (for those games) I'm teetering on 20GB left (on a 120GB)..

360 game saves are usually under 5mb. It's the map-packs and extras that use more space.

according to http://techforums.nintendo.com/nins/board/message?board.id=wii_tech&message.id=180 the Wii only have about 350MB left for saves.. I've probably only used 10-15MB on Saves (about 6 games) then got 2 downloads, 14MB for SSF2:WW.. then I've got an SNES RPG too (Breath of Fire).. 40MB total? just looking at my first few 360 games (first 6, excluding Hexic/pre-installed stuff) I would have been at least double my total on the Wii.. Though your right XBL really kills the HDD space

... or it might be simple fact that 512MB chips are cheaper now compared to what was in original Xbox360 design before.

Witnessed not once that in modern embedded system. As price of components drop, often it is cheaper to install new, more capable chip than trying to buy older chips (which are actually start growing in price due to lower demand). Chip producers are quick to adopt new manufacturing processes and keeping factories on older manuf. processes simply not economical to them.

Wii had 512 MB internal Flash Memory.

Took them long enough.

Also they haven't fixed the RRoD problem. I still have my harddrive but they need to fix the RRoD.

Congrats MS for those not owing an Arcade System to feel shame. I mean seriously it's a rip-off if you get a Core (I still call it Core) without the Hard drive and the damn wireless controller.

Just upgrading is about 210 bucks. 410 dollars to get XBLA or I mean 460 dollars or 411 if you get the one month thing.

The Arcade systems have come with wireless controllers for a long time now. Only the original Cores came with the wired controller.

I still don't understand why the 60GB HDD unit costs so much - you'd think they'd either have adapted it to be like the PS3 (i.e. you can change the HDD and there's no limit on space) or actually brought the costs inline with typical OEM drives since it's essentially off-the-shelf hardware in a fancy case (just like your average portable HDD) after all the backlash.

Same reason this so called "cheaper than Wii" 360 doesn't sport integrated wireless and they charge you 100 bucks for it

If you really want to, there are ways to install your own HDD on a 360 (limited to 120GB though). And while I agree peripherals for ALL the consoles are a bit overpriced, you shouldn't be using wireless anyway. I have 3 devices in my home entertainment center that need an internet connection including a Dish Network receiver that does not have wi-fi, therefore running a cable and setting up a router was in my best interest.

When I ran my 360 wirelessly, lag was common and media streaming was slow and of medium quality. With a wire, no lag and Netflix always runs at highest video quality. I therefore run a wire to my PS3 as well. The only thing I trust to wireless is casual internet browsing.

Ok so basically the article is telling Arcade 360 owners that newer later models now have more ram than previous ones so that Arcade 360 users can experience more things off of Xbox Live.

Basically what this is telling me is that when MS updates or upgrades Live again the new set up will take advantage or require the extra ram that has been put into the newer Arcade 360 models. Previous owners who don't have the added ram won't be able to experience the new features because their 360s only have the ram they came packaged with before the upgrade which would A) cut them off of any new or expanded experiences online if they chose to sign on B) force them to change or upgrade to a newer model even though their current one works just fine.

This to me sounds like total BS!! And what's worse people are eating this news up like it's good news. Why does MS feel the need to try and sugar coat the costs of gaming consoles by releasing model after model and pretend that people are getting more for less? Convincing people they can save money by only spending on features they want then turn around and find ways to force people to upgrade to newer models is ridiculous! Then they turn around and claim that it's an expanded and better experience they'll be getting with the newer models and punishing those who can't afford an upgrade? That's just fucking stupid......

Um, previous Arcade/Core owners who use Live have already recieved a FREE memory card or discounted 20GB hard drive during the upgrade program MS had before the launch of the NXE. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to sign into XBL.

So I'm not sure I'm following how this is BS???? Perhaps you're thinking this is something other than storage space that they're upgrading?

They never increased the RAM, they increased the Solid State drive, disk space.

essentially they took a memory card, ripped out the chip and soldered it to the motherboard.

What I really meant was freeing up the space on my HD that is occupied by data that is already on this onboard memory, such as the NXE, backwards compatiblity, etc.

Well, that another step forward. The only thing the Arcade needs now is integrated wireless.

My laptop has it, my PS3 has it. Dam, my underatedsohatedunderpowered Wii has it. Why cant all 360 can have wireless integrated already??? Its two thousand freaking nine already, wireless its the way we roll all now!!! Its mandatory that anything with internet connection have wireless (yes, even desktop need to have wireless integrated on the boards)

Instead, they charge 100 bucks for the adapter, and they still call it cheaper than Wii????

Yeah right

Wireless sucks for consoles though. Half-duplex, limited range and unreliability are not good combinations for online gaming or media streaming. Plus cat-5 is cheaper! I'm not making apologies for MS' overpriced wi-fi adapter, but really, wired is the best way to go.

Sorry, but knowing how to configure your wireless and a couple of trick to increase the perfomance of the same that can be find in google its pretty different to only state that wireless suck

I can state, that I had had better experience using wireless than a pretty loooong cat-5 cable

Look for a couple of homemade wireless anthenas, they had made wonders with my gaming on my Wii and PS3. Renering my online matched on SC4 and SMBB almost lag free

Yeah, "sucks" might be an exaggeration, but to say that wireless is better than wired would be asinine. Wireless can certainly be "more convenient" than wired and can sometimes, with the right equipment and know-how get *close* to wired performance, but it is not equal.

I have a Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware, so I'm not unaware of stable wireless hardware and custom solutions. Even so, running wireless, streaming Netflix would consistently only display medium video quality while running a wire produced the highest video quality every time.

Plus, setting up custom, external and unwieldy wi-fi antennas is only feasible for non-mobile devices and even then it can look ridiculous.

@Badboy1979

I'm sick of seeing news on 360 hardware "upgrades" and "changes". It makes me think that even my 360 won't be as cool because it doesn't have the latest chip in it. It really aggravates me when I see these articles because it makes me think that my own 360 has a limited shelf life more so than it should. With all the problems that have been constant with the 360 thus far seeing an article for "new chips" or more RAM makes me think that at some point my 360 will have hardware failure due to poor parts and hardware or that a new more efficient version of it will outclass what I have now in performance and reliability. These articles aren't positive they just re-iterate what MS should have done with the 360 from the beginning (make sure that it was and is a top quality piece of hardware right from the get go) It's got a great library of games but if the hardware is crap those games are useless.

New chips that make it run better and more RAM just reminds me that I might have invested in the 360 too early and had i waited longer I could have invested in a version of it that didn't require upgraded hardware for any reason. One thing is for sure. I'm going to wait A LOT longer before I decide to invest in another MS console if I ever do again. Maybe after they've made the 1000th model of the next Xbox they'll have gotten it right.

I had a launch 20gb Pro blow out its 3d chip so I replaced it with an Arcade last weekend. It was a dusty one from the back of my local GameStop so I confirmed it was a Jasper board before I payed (12.1v on the left side of the window). The internal memory (MU) says 323MB Free. It must have the larger unit on board. The unit is empty except for 40KB in the system data (Avatar System Data). Oddly the graphic when selecting the unit (over my old HD) shows it as about 40% full. So the system hides about 189 MB for its self which seems rather reasonable.

I for one was very annoyed when I bought one of these new Arcades as a replacement of a failed out of warranty 360 and found out that the memory card included was actually onboard.

Since I already own a hard drive, I don't need this puny onboard memory chip. Since I haven't bought an overpriced external 360 memory card, I would have gotten more use out of that had it been included (for transferring gamer tags to consoles of friends), and expected it since it was referenced on the box.

Finally, this onboard memory is just barely enough to get connected to XBox Live and can potentially hold personal information (like credit card info, address, etc) that can't be wiped, backed up, or removed from the console if (when) it needs to be sent away for repairs.

I personally think this is a backwards move for the Arcade.

Well, y'know, you can delete it until your 360 RRODs. But when you're about to send your Xbox back for repair is when you are most concerned about the data on it.
