Well, the Bioshock and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion bundle just got a lot less interesting. We put in word to Bethesda's Pete Hines asking which version of Oblivion would be included in the bundle, and he got back to us with this most sad news: It's the original game. That means it's not the Game of the Year edition including Shivering Isles, the lengthy expansion featuring the hilarious Daedric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath.
Its not GOTY because that would mean they loose money for a 3 year old game, I mean come on? They really couldn't have included all if not some of the DLC.
Didn't the GoTY edition of Oblivion come with two discs... One with Oblivion on it and the other with the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles on it.
I don't see this having too much an impact on sales for either game. Who out wanted one or both of these games yet didn't buy it already? I'm having trouble imagining how this will be a success. Am I alone?
you have to consider that people are getting xbox 360s for the first time every single day. For those people this would be a great game to grab with your new 360.
Having since fallen in love with Fallout 3, I'm wondering if that means I'm basically guaranteed to love Oblivion as well? I mean I know it's just Fallout with swords/cutlasses/rapiers (yuk yuk yuk), but I think I'd probably dig the fantasy world/story aspect of it, too.
Er, with fireballs, too. I'm assuming Oblivion has fireballs.
Am I missing out if I don't get the Oblivion DLC? Shivering Isles? I just started the Pitt in Fallout and am really happy I downloaded the extra goodness.
I've actually heard from a few people that they loved Oblivion and hated Fallout and vice-versa. Personally, both games (Oblivion/Fallout have given me headaches) but that's cause I always felt obligated to be staring at the ground so as not to miss any items. As a result, I didn't give either games too much time so I don't let me keep you away from trying it.
Personally i put more hours into Oblivion then Fallout 3 and i never bought DLC for it. just get the GOTY edition. If you seem to like the main stuff install the DLC. I played Shivering Isles on PC and it was a great add on.
The leveling system is the big difference. You level certain aspects of your character (lockpick, conjuration, etc.) the more you use them. Then after leveling certain character traits enough you level up. It's cool in that it really responds to the way you play. But a lot of people hate it.
Also, NPCs and creatures level with you, so the stronger you get, the more likely you are to be fighting a minotaur or a dude with strong armor.
It's been a while since I popped it in, but I had a lot of fun with it.
oblivion is a very good game and the dlc is a must if you get the game but it is an older version of fallout 3 they fixed the problems with the game when they made fallout said that if you have not gotten oblivion it is a great investment i personally put over a hundred hours into it
you're in for a treat. in my opinion Oblivion is at least 3x better than Fallout 3. And no Oblivion is not just fallout 3 with swords/cutlasses/rapiers. It has magic and more, and the story is better than you trying to find your father.
I despise Oblivion with every fiber of my being. Now, before I get downranked, let me explain.
I had put over 250 hours into oblivion, completed every guild and the main storylline, gotten every achievement, until they added the new ones with Shivering Isles. I was halfway through completing the Shivering Isles, when, for some reason, my game froze. Thinking it was just oblivion being oblivion again, I turned it off. When I turned it back on, I looked in horror as all my save files were gone. Almost 300 hours of my life, for nothing. I put Oblivion in its case, and the disc never saw the light of day again.
Since you mentioned achievements I am assuming you were playing it on the Xbox 360. Your saves being gone would be the fault of the console for not writing its cache to the hard drive every so often. When you saved, it likely stored it in memory until later when the console saw there was little going on and decides to write the cache to disk(or some other time when something needs it on-disk). The fact that it didn't survive a power cycle meant the files got corrupt from being in an inconsistent state and thus the OS dropped the files from the filesystem.
Nowadays this issue may have been fixed and you could still finish up Shivering Isles to get your last achievements. Shivering Isles is a great sidequest. I wouldn't pass it up if I were you.
Actually both the PC and 360 version had the save killing bug the above user suffered from. In fact, those in the know kept multiple save files, usually one for every five new hours you put into the game. However, those not "in the know" suffered great loses. And unfortunately, Bethesda still refuses to give these kinds of warning to their consumer base.
"Warning: This game has more bugs than Courtney Love's crotch... keep multiple save files and pray nothing fucks up. Thanks for your many year of beta testing!"
man i dont advocate this but..you should just go and use item dup glitch..(if they havnt fixed that by now.) at least till you get your self back to where your spot when your game froze and continue. at least think it as revenge on the game :^/
I never going to pick up this game or wont pick up Dead Risining because DR doesn't have auto save and have to go through 30 mins of gameplay again and save.
How is the Steam pricing screwing anyone?, GOTY editions on console cost £20 still, without the extra DLC, the Steam version is £12 for GOTY AND DLC, or £9 for GOTY on it's own. That's extremely good prices, especially on such a long game, were talking like 5p/hr of enjoyment, it rarely gets better value than that.
I can't help but wonder, with both of these games hitting bins on PS3, why they didn't do a sku on that console as well. Seems unlikely it's an SCEA thing since they've been allowing the two packs on PSP, but SCEA has been confusing in the past.
You can currently buy the GOTY Oblivion and Bioshock used on Amazon for 22.00 and 17.00 respectively, or pay 39.99 for this bundle... 99 cents more for none of the DLC! Sounds like a deal to me. I'm going to camp out front of toys R us right now!
For new copies, you can get GOTY Oblivion and Bioshock for $19.49 and $19.99 respectively. So basically, if you want both right now, you can get it for $40.
Yes, marketing is not doing its job if it can't see the inconsistency in the pricing for this special bundle. Or they think people are complete morons, which I wouldn't put it past them.
Just an FYI, I'm pretty sure you can use other people's GOTY disc to install the Shivering Isles expansion for free, so if you know someone else with one, you can get a free upgrade to the GOTY edition.
And it's still stupid that in a bundle with two games of the year, with it saying 80 game of the year awards won on the front, they still won't include the game of the year edition.

Shivering Isles is wonderful, but the main quest of TOS IV is quite substantial.
