Pre-order ODST, unlock Sgt. Avery Johnson
So here's the news: Pre-ordering Halo 3: ODST at participating retailers will net you a token to unlock Sergeant Johnson as a playable character in the new Firefight mode. We greet this news with mixed feelings. On one hand, A.J. Johnson is undeniably a badass. His in-game model is even chomping his trademark cigar. On the other hand, we're not sure if picking Johnson amounts to cheating.
As Halo players well know, the man is invincible. The guy was jumped by the Flood and survived. Hell, we've seen him take a beam rifle to the head without even flinching. Here's hoping his mortality is restored for ODST. Otherwise it just wouldn't be fair. Check out some screens of Sgt. Johnson in the gallery below, and find a list of participating retailers after the break.

I hope we get to hear him make badass remarks while playing as him
MetalBLACKFOX @ Jun 18th 2009 7:38PM
OMG how!! the article was up for 30 seconds- at least let the "BLACK" guy get first for this article X (
Roger @ Jun 18th 2009 7:43PM
screw that, I want him just to say "What is your major malfunction, maggot?" Whenever he gets an enemy headshot.
But in all seriousness, I'll buy a halo product over my dead body and considering they still sell gamer fuel; I'm sure it will happen some time soon.

And this is why Halo 2 was better than Halo 3.
Iroquois @ Jun 18th 2009 9:25PM
@Manly
He did that in Halo 1 also. The talk he gives all the Marines at the beginning when they're getting ready to repel boarders changes.
"We will rip the skulls from their heads and throw them away laughing!" or something like that on legendary i think
Cr4sh Dummy @ Jun 19th 2009 4:23AM
@The Dark Wayne
After Dare complements him on blowing up a giant fucking Covenant ship he says: "I know what the ladies like." I hope we hear him say some awesome comments during firefight.
Blank-Mage @ Jun 19th 2009 7:59AM
@ METAL:
Having Black in your name does not let you preempt the goddamn Batman.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 20th 2009 10:28AM
@Cr4sh, Johnson said that to Cortana in Halo 2, not Dare.

"You guys need better transition defense!"
Masker @ Jun 18th 2009 7:52PM
WTF does that have to do with Halo.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 18th 2009 7:55PM
Cause that's Avery Johnson!
Paul @ Jun 19th 2009 2:12PM
haha nice. that is the first thing i thought of when i saw avery johnson as well. my friend can do the best impression of him......."if our boys play defense, we'll win the da ballgame!"
yo @ Jun 24th 2009 11:29PM
didn't he die in halo 3?
grimm @ Jun 18th 2009 7:44PM
I think the story is concurrent with Halo 3's story.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 18th 2009 7:47PM
firefight mode isnt story based
CloudStrife @ Jun 18th 2009 7:48PM
ODST is set inbetween 2 and 3, so Johnson would still be alive
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 18th 2009 8:10PM
but he would be on delta halo, but it doesnt matter because firefight is obviously not "canon"
LaughingTarget @ Jun 18th 2009 8:27PM
It's canon, Sgt. Johnson is invincible in Halo 1 and 2, so it stands to reason he's invincible up until he dies in 3. I heard him say "Buddha" just before he died.
acme @ Jun 19th 2009 11:07AM
invincible before he dies? do you even read what you right?
acme @ Jun 19th 2009 11:07AM
write >.<
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 18th 2009 7:51PM
"The guy was jumped by the Flood and survived".
And yet he died in the cheapest way possible.
Is like surviving a nuke only to stept on a soap bar in the shower the next day.
Shadsy @ Jun 18th 2009 8:08PM
But he DID survive a nuke.
Thatoneguy64 @ Jun 18th 2009 7:53PM
Oh god... I don't know what to do, man. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!
I hate preorder bonuses on principal, but I love Sergeant Avery Johnson....
I think.... I think I'll have to preorder. It's Sergeant fucking Johnson, man... Sergeant motherfucking Johnson
BunnySlapper @ Jun 18th 2009 10:04PM
Deep breaths...
Shingo_E_X @ Jun 18th 2009 8:36PM
"As Halo players well know, the man is invincible."
No, he's not. He died in Halo 3. His only real "feat" was the fact he was immune to the Flood infection.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Jun 18th 2009 8:42PM
Humor is lost on you isn't it you meatwad?
Blank-Mage @ Jun 19th 2009 8:01AM
I believe the term is "Metabag". I mean, have some robot pride, eh?
Blank-Mage @ Jun 19th 2009 8:01AM
Or"Meatbag". Ya know. For people who like spelling and shit.
aristokrat @ Jun 19th 2009 11:50AM
Don't cross the Adult swim streams. Only insanity will follow.
Mr Freeze (Rehabilitation FTW) @ Jun 18th 2009 8:38PM
I wonder if Johnson was modeled after the sergeant in Aliens?
jackal @ Jun 18th 2009 8:57PM
Mr Freeze,
I've often wondered the same thing; Apone and Johnson not only look alike, they have both have the same mannerisms (smoking stogies would be one) and say very similar things when it comes to A) motivating troops or B) wiping the floor with non-humans.
F1: Basu Gasu Bakuhatsu @ Jun 18th 2009 9:27PM
They are. Aliens deeply inspired Halo in it's creation such as the Elites (Split Jaw Aliens), Pelicans( The movies dropship), and Johnson himself (The Sarge from Aliens). Also if one was to play Halo Wars the Cyclops looks alot like Ridelys Exo from the first movie.
Prox @ Jun 19th 2009 9:18AM
I was watching Aliens two nights ago and started thinking the same thing. There are TONS of similarities between the two. Not a bad thing in my book.
OH! One big thing I noticed was when the marines (in Aliens) were on the dropship entering the planet's orbit and the pilot (I wish I knew her name) said, "We're in for some chop." There is a campaign section in one of the Halo games named after that line.
Shingo_E_X @ Jun 18th 2009 8:44PM
Maybe so. But being a total douche is apparently your forte.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Jun 18th 2009 8:49PM
Its what I do best
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 18th 2009 8:57PM
well replying certainly isnt yours
Fraggy4 @ Jun 18th 2009 9:07PM
Wow, this is old news. I'm pretty sure I read this hidden away on the ODST page at Bungie.net during E3
WRYYYYYY @ Jun 18th 2009 9:13PM
Sgt. Johnson can beat Chuck Norris at Connect Four in two moves.
Commando62 @ Jun 18th 2009 10:41PM
well done, sir.
You have officially just made my day!
Quattro @ Jun 18th 2009 9:17PM
It's strange because you could kill him in Halo 1, although he'd keep coming back strangely.
F1: Basu Gasu Bakuhatsu @ Jun 18th 2009 9:30PM
Well see the explanation for that is that Johnson was a part of an ONI experiment to fill the army's ranks with utter badasses. Unfortunately when Reach fell all of the paperwork went with it and the only surviving clones escaped on the Autumn.
aristokrat @ Jun 19th 2009 11:52AM
It's rumored that he's a SPARTAN-I. Then they realized they needed to start biomodification and training at a young age for best results.
mgsrocks1 @ Jun 18th 2009 9:29PM
I remember that hilarious secret scene at the end of Halo 2 where Avery and the Arbiter hug each before they die. I recommend everyone to read Contact Harvest. It shows in detail why Avery Johnson is such an awesome character.
Mikey @ Jun 18th 2009 10:25PM
pssst: that was Halo 1 not Halo 2. Halo 2 didn't have a legendary ending. (Believe me I tried, actually I think we all tried, that ending sucked)
mgsrocks1 @ Jun 19th 2009 5:43AM
Oh, thanks for correcting me.
Mike @ Jun 18th 2009 9:52PM
No wonder his players hated him. You can't talk to NBA players like that in this day and age.
Alphathon @ Jun 19th 2009 2:30AM
Damn you pre-order bonuses. Before this I had absolutelly no interest in pre-ordering ODST. Heck I have Halo and Halo 2 on PC, and Halo 3 on 360 and I havn't finished any of them (although ODST does seem more appealing somehow, maybe it's because you aren't f***ing master chef...er, I meen chief, maybe it's because everything seems less...colourful I guess. I did enjoy halo wars though, maybe also due to the lack of the chief). Actually £29.99 isn't that bad from game and gamestation (thats ~$50US to put it in perspective, pretty good, especially when our games tend to cost more than in the US anyway). Shame amazon and play are £10 more expensive :(
K1LLER HORNET @ Jun 19th 2009 7:08AM
Amazon are now £29.99 - & Play will obviously follow suit as they always maintain prices with Amazon.
£29.99 is a great price for ODST - but be sure to pre-order & not purchase instore as the prices tend to be £39.99 instore,
plus you wont get Sgt. Johnson :)
Seriously though, you did not complete HALO 1, 2 or 3?
but you enjoyed HALO WARS :?
Weird.
Alphathon @ Jun 19th 2009 4:42PM
Yeah, I know what you meen, about not completing halo 1, 2 or 3, and about liking halo wars, but I think I know why. I didn't complete halo 1 bacause my savegame corrupted. I got relativelly far though. I believe I was onto "The Library". 2 and 3 arte because I only got them about a month ago and other things have had my attention.
As for halo wars, I think the main reason is I prefer RTS over FPS, but also because it there is something I really don't like about master chief. Seems too much of a Deus Ex Machina and from what I've played didn't seem to have much character or personality. Might as well have been just a suit of power armour. Theres also something about the atmosphere and soundtrack that I just assossiate with the "best game evar!" attitude a lot of gamers seem to have towards it, but I, as a primarily PC gamer feel that it is pretty mediocre and generic (not so much by console standards, but still). That may sound elitist, but bear with me. PC gamers have been spoiled over the years by so many good FPSs that almost any FPS on a console will feel poor by comparison. That, and depsite what people say, halo does not have a deep storyline, which is something an FPS needs a lont more than an RTS, as RTSs are more disjointed from the characters anyway (although like with FPSs, Halo Wars has nothing on most PC RTSs, especially control-wise - no matter how well it is designed for consoles, you need a mouse or similar pointer (wiimote for example) to fluidly select troops and move them around).
