PSN Thursday: MGS1 infiltrates the PSOne Classics' ranks

Similarly to the European PSN Store update, this week's content is a little lean.
But what's this? Solid Snake infiltrates the store in his original PS1 adventure, Metal Gear Solid. Yours for the premium PS1 price of $9.99. Sure you can probably find a cheaper copy in a bargain bin somewhere, but really you're paying for the ability to play this classic on your PSP. Anywhere. Other than that, there's a new episode of Qore and an NCAA Football 10 demo. PSP owners can grab GRAW 2 and some themes, too.

wtf! Our European Update is shit! When are we going to get MGS1 for the EU?
Snowblind @ Jun 18th 2009 5:39PM
Get it from the US store. I did the same with FF7. No point in waiting for the PAL versions, especially for these games that were badly optimised for Europe and run at half the speed.
Autobot @ Jun 18th 2009 7:37PM
I heard next week. I feel so bad for you europeans.
Kill a mans jiro @ Jun 18th 2009 8:27PM
EU always get the crap end of the stick, just look at the home update today, compare US one to EU, we got rag doll kung fu FFS lol
Im glad for those of u in US just hope SCEE get on ball
RagingStormX @ Jun 18th 2009 8:58PM
@ Kill a mans jiro

Mazrael @ Jun 18th 2009 9:49PM
We europeans are lucky to even get a theme, I think we got a choice of about 8...
Vidikron @ Jun 19th 2009 1:07AM
We got Rag Doll Kung Fu for free here in the US.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 18th 2009 5:40PM
Guess what else Sony fucked up again at the EU PS Blog by stating that Fat Princess would be released this month and now we get word it's not even coming out next week!!!

greg (peevmyster) @ Jun 18th 2009 5:51PM
Damn, I can't wait for fat princess.... that game is sick.
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 18th 2009 7:31PM
greg's words are the truth.

GRAW 2 ON PSP SUCKS!!!
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 18th 2009 7:12PM
How bad?
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 18th 2009 7:31PM
bad.
TDiddy @ Jun 18th 2009 5:41PM
How can you beat Psycho Mantis on the PSP? Certainly not how he was designed to be beaten...
GuardianBob @ Jun 18th 2009 5:58PM
*SPOILER ALERT*
I'd assume that you simply press HOME, go to "Controller Settings" and then use "Assign Controller Ports".
Schmullus @ Jun 18th 2009 7:25PM
There is also the statues in the room that you can shoot to disrupt his powers.
What I'm wondering, and I don't think it'll work on the PSP but I don't know how memory cards work on it, is if the old memory card scan will work with Konami games. I think Suikoden and Castlevania SOTN were among games detected by Mantis.
steven(PSN: small_hands) @ Jun 18th 2009 7:55PM
SPOILER
Do we really need to say "spoiler" on a game over 10 years old? Especially one of the most talked about aspects of the game and probably one of the most talked about boss fights in gaming history? anyway Spoiler none the less dont want to ruin it for anyone that hasnt played this gem ^^
Does that shooting the statues thing work on the PS1 version? I can remember trying to beat psycho mantis without switching ports many a night, back in '98 and failing! I kno you can do it on Twin Snakes for GC... hmmm... but yeah just press home and switch ports that way
Cant wait for this to hit Europe so I can get my retro-gear on!
Pukel @ Jun 18th 2009 11:17PM
More to the point, those playing the downloadable game for the first time are going to have trouble getting the codec frequency off the game box ...
Sly [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 18th 2009 11:40PM
pukel, googling it is always an easy option.
JayFight @ Jun 19th 2009 6:54AM
you know i can see that you can still switch ports and some of the games he reads off of your memory card are playable but what about his trick with moving your controller with his mind how will that work
Cellien @ Jun 18th 2009 5:41PM
Oh man, this is the Metal Gear I loved! I don't recall it looking that AA'd as it does in the screenshot there tho! :P
TheDemiurge @ Jun 18th 2009 7:21PM
I bet that is a screenshot from the PC version.
TreyIM @ Jun 18th 2009 8:05PM
I agree with you on this MGS. I love this one out of all of them even though the very first Metal Gear has a special place in my heart because it was such a pleasant surprise. My cousin ended up with it somehow and I actually found it under a couch at his house and decided to play it. I was HOOKED. Sadly, though, after MGS, I have had this not so good relationship with the MG series. MGS2 - Horrible, from a story perspective. MGS3 - Uhh, I am nowhere near finished that one. MGS sucked the love out of me and, actually, I received MGS3 as a Christmas gift. I looked at the person who gave it to me as if I was about to puke. MGS4 - Uhh, I puked copiously while playing that ridiculously storied game but from technical standpoint - Masterpiece!
I actually felt like I wanted to purchase MGS1 when I seen it on the PSN, today, but, of course, no need cuz I still own my original copy and can pop it in my PS3 anytime I want.
Caveman @ Jun 18th 2009 5:45PM
This is my favorite PS1 game of all time. I played this game so much.
BigD145 @ Jun 18th 2009 5:49PM
I already own it. Why should I buy it again?
Victor @ Jun 18th 2009 5:56PM
You shouldn't! You should get Twin Snakes :D
roger @ Jun 18th 2009 6:13PM
I bought a GC recently just so I could play the twin snakes version, now Im just waiting for the next B2G1 from Gamestop. In the mean time I have RE 0, RE, RE4, and windwaker to keep me busy until then.
TheDemiurge @ Jun 18th 2009 7:23PM
Why is there a post like this every time Sony releases a PS1 game? If you own a PSP you can buy it to play it on that, otherwise I would save my money.
Nook @ Jun 18th 2009 7:26PM
@roger - you'll find 0 and RE are alot alike, you could pass on 0 and pick up Eternal Darkness, then you;ll have a very solid line up of cube titles to play. of course you could play 0 and enjoy the creepy environments and the duel character control...it's a fun game.
but get eternal darkness man.
glitched @ Jun 18th 2009 8:53PM
If you already own it. you can stick the disk in your ps3 and play it there.
or use remote play "for the ability to play this classic on your PSP. Anywhere."*
you can play any ps1 disc in the ps3's drive via remote play on the psp * as long as your connection's fast enough and you can stand a certain amount of lag.
BigD145 @ Jun 18th 2009 10:21PM
$170 PSP tethered to a $400 PS3 all to play a $10 game. Yay for technology and portability?
altctrlpwn @ Jun 18th 2009 11:12PM
"I already own it. Why should I buy it again?"
That's great . . . what was the point of your post again?
placebo @ Jun 20th 2009 9:02AM
@Roger: B2G1 is in effect now. B&M and Online. GOGOGO Cube powah!
(I bought RE2, RE3 and Mario Strikers last week and will probably get a few others to fill out the collection.)
Sundermania @ Jun 18th 2009 5:53PM
New Spinal Tap songs? C'mon!
Let me know when they put out Stonehenge, Sex Farm, and Big Bottom.
Yousef Qassim @ Jun 18th 2009 5:53PM
do psone games work on both psp and ps3? or u have to download it separately for each system
buddyleer @ Jun 18th 2009 5:57PM
To my knowledge, they work on both, just after one purchase. You just have to use remote play.
GuardianBob @ Jun 18th 2009 6:01PM
Go to the PSP game entry on your PS3, hit Triangle" and choose "Copy". If your PSP is connected with the USB cable, it will transfer it to your portable system. No need to keep your PS3 on after the process is complete.
Tyler @ Jun 18th 2009 6:02PM
I have Jet Motto 2 on my PS3 hard drive and I sent it to my PSP via USB and I can play the game on both systems.
Yousef Qassim @ Jun 18th 2009 6:06PM
Thank you guys
arrness @ Jun 18th 2009 10:02PM
buddy is wrong, you dont need remote play
guardianbob is right
just clarifying
Courtney @ Jun 18th 2009 5:57PM
I got the Metal Gear pack with 1/2/3 in it right before 4 came out. If you've got a BC PS3 or a PS2, that collection rocks.
dblakenz @ Jun 18th 2009 6:49PM
Agreed, I love my orig 60GB PS3 :)
I got every metal gear game made (for playstation ) MGS1,2,3,4 + the subsistence versions + Portable Ops & both Ac!d games. Will get this one too, give me a reason to go and find and dust off my psp again
Twist @ Jun 18th 2009 5:58PM
I wish this game (or better yet the remake The Twin Snakes) would make its way to XBLA.
xera077 @ Jun 18th 2009 6:07PM
There's a problem with that moron.
It was a GCN exclusive title that Silicon Knights kind of butchered.
So unless you want the Matrix Gear Solid then get a Wii or a Gamecube and own up about 30 bucks.
Viney @ Jun 18th 2009 6:36PM
Haven't confirmed this myself, but I've heard that the Wii doesn't handle the disc swap well for that game either, so better just get the gamecube.
Snowblind @ Jun 18th 2009 6:39PM
I don't see why you were voted down for this. I'm definitely going to buy it on the PSN, despite owning the original PSOne version, but an enhanced XBLA port would be even better.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 18th 2009 7:33PM
@Snowblind
Uhm Fuck No!
Windmill @ Jun 18th 2009 7:40PM
Give us Banjo Kazooie, and we'll give you MGS :D
TTownEP @ Jun 18th 2009 8:27PM
My Wii handled the Twin Snakes disc swap just fine. It's not exactly in the same place as the PS1 version if I remember correctly though.
Syncognition @ Jun 18th 2009 11:56PM
There really is nothing wrong with twin snakes. Any complaints should be taken up with Kojima, not Silicon Knights as the over-the-top cut scenes were at his request, and the removal of accents on certain characters was due to continuity errors (namely Mei Ling being American-born and so forth).
The only valid complaints I've ever heard are that boss battles are watered-down due to the fact that at the start of the game the player has full health and ammo capacity available, and that sneaking sections can be more frustrating because guards have a 3 dimensional "cone" of vision rather than a 2d "wedge" (personally, this is the most bothersome issue for me as guards who previously couldn't see you on staircases from a separate floor in the PS1 version are now able to detect you). Aside from these complaints, Twin Snakes to me at least is the best way to experience Metal Gear Solid. The ability to skip long codec conversations and cut-scenes with the touch of a button rather than having to mash cancel, as well as the refined gameplay and more impressive visual presentation make it a much more satisfying experience overall.
Looks like I, like Kojima, am in desperate need of an editor. I really didn't intend to type that much. Oh well.
