Meaningful -- as in it'll mean Sony would finally bow to ubiquitous suggestions, predictions and occasional threats that see the PlayStation 3 being lowered in price please please oh please. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia is the latest to join the frugal chorus, telling Industry Gamers, "We continue to believe a $100 price cut on PS3 will occur around the launch of EA's Madden NFL 2010, which is scheduled for release on 8/18."
Agee claims to have encountered similar sentiment at a recent GameStop executive meeting, overhearing talk of a "highly likely" and "meaningful" near-term price drop even over the clinking of diamond-encrusted chalices and relentless pre-order thrusting.
It's Sony's decision, ultimately, but if it's alright with you, we'd rather just get this price drop over with. A lower price means more people get in on the fun ... especially when they also get to stop reading these things.

That would actually be a wise move on Sony's part. I can't think of any two things that are more associated with each other (outside of Mario and Nintendo) than Madden and the Playstation.
The Madden series single hadedly made PS2 the system to beat last gen.

Well, if you buy a PS3 off Sony's website instead of at a retailer, you effectively DO get a price cut.
1. Free 2nd DS3 controller
2. Get a Sony card and get $100-200 discount
3. Use points from said card to get a free BD remote
I got a PS3 with 2 controllers and the remote for $200 this way.

Could everyone please stop letting everyone know about the Sony Card offer--I don't think its a good idea to go around suggesting that people get credit cards just to buy a video game system no matter the perks.

@spartacus: Agreed on the Sony Card, that's my price cut right there (hopefully after a real cut). Currently have $250 worth of points saved up. In that case of a pre-existing card, you get double the purchase points buying straight from a Sony Style shop, meaning another few bucks off. Just depends if Best Buy or Amazon has a better bundle deal.

Don't worry dude, it's definately happening. Just like the 2008 christmas price drop. Then the january sales price drop. Then the march start of new financial year price drop. Then the GDC price drop. Then the E3 price drop. Now it's going to be the august price drop! Maybe even a TGS and christmas price drop too!
Seriously, the speculation is rediculous... every f'in week!

In the UK, WH Smiths are selling off all the old (bankrupt supplier) EUK stock.. PS3s (80GB) have been going for £200, 360 Pro @ £100, Arcades or £80 & PSP's for £50 - I think this will because, WH Smiths had the stock on a 'pay later'.. so esentually free stock, get it sold off, rake in the cash.. been doing it with games too, but not the newer releases (from new supplier).. It's the only time recently WH Smiths have had decent prices on games..! need to be quick/lucky to catch any...

What is this? Do we live in a world where people believe "If enough people think it, it will actually happen!"?
When it comes to speculation, I think this story needs to be put on the back burner until it's actually confirmed.

@BigFat That's why you ask the Lifestyle Questions. You didn't know I knew that, did ya? You find out what they're interested in. What types of games they're looking for. And then you show them what you think is best based on that. If they ask your opinion, that's fine. But you should reiterate to them that your job is to find the best one for them.

As we no longer have seniors...
Must be an old geezer then.
And lifestyle questions are overrated. People either know what they want or they don't know.
All I can do is show them what they want to see.

LOL. You don't even know me man. So allow me to educate you, a term I know you're not very familiar with but let's give it a shot anyway.
I left 3 months ago for a much better job. The major changes only recently happened as I'm still good friends with a lot of the people that work there and I still shop there, so I know what's going on.
And old geezer? Not by any stretch my friend. I'll be 26 in August. I'm sure that's older than you, well, atleast older than you act anyway....

And I almost forgot.
Lifestyle questions aren't overrated. They're a proven formula that works time and time again. During my 3 years there, I could sell anything to anyone after only finding out a little bit about them. I was even the store's first employee of the month. I know it's only retail and it's only Best Buy but everyone should take a little pride in their job no matter what it is. If you worked with me and all you were doing was directing traffic, I would've gotten rid of you a long time ago because you're not doing your job. Your just pushing your opinions on other people because your vile hatred for the PlayStation. And that sort of bias shouldn't be tolerated.

Amen to that. A few days ago I sold some stuff at Gamestop and I'm holding on to my funny money just for a PS3.
It's not that the PS3 is overpriced (I mean I bought my 360 for $400), but if I can save a hundred bucks, why not right? More money towards PS3 games in my opinion.

Why is the PS3 so expensive?!! I’m 15 and I saved up for a while and bought mine. Sure it’s £300 but I’m still happy to pay it!! If people really want a PS3 they should save up, buy one and stop complaining! And if they already have one, why the hell are they complaining?!!
I understand that these are hard times, but if people are in huge financial trouble they should worry about other things and not gaming. Yeah, it’s fun but it’s not the biggest priority in life for them.

Gaming is a nice way to forget about their financial problems. And the Wii is the most popular way of doing just that, apparently.

I know I'm going to regret this, but... Why do you hate Sony and the PS3? It's one thing to have a preference in consoles, but it's something completely different to fuel the burning hatred you seem to carry around with you. Don't like the PS3? Don't buy it, don't think about it, pretend it doesn't exist - but you seem hell bent on flaming it every chance you get.
I just don't get it, please enlighten me.

I've never responded to Lion or as I've noticed some of you guys call him "sprinkles", but I've gotta say you must have an IQ that is definitely under 100. I say this because if I'm not mistaken I read you were 23 year old "man", and it seems your two buddies haven't dropped yet since you seem to have the mind of a child.

Its not going to happen.... Sony is losing about 40$ per sale, why would they make it 90$, or even 140$ per sale loss. Unless they made a new ps3 with even less parts than the current models. I'm pissed that my ps3 is missing an SD slot. I was gonna use it for the first time, only to find out that it didn't have it.

That's your own fault. Research your SKUs before you buy one. Now, I will admit Sony has made it pretty confusing, so you get a pass regardless, but if the nonstandard features are important to you, you need to do your research.
I went the easy route and camped out for a 60GB on launch day. :-)

lol, i bought the ps3 during the Amazon Vote wars, where you vote for the best deal then get to buy it. I got the 80GB ps3 with 6 BD movies and Farcry 2 for 350$. I was too shocked by the value to even check which sku it was.
