Here's your new issue of EGM! It's called Maxim

While some folks wait to subscribe to the reanimated EGM later this year, those who currently have a subscription to the deceased periodical have begun receiving their replacement magazine: Maxim. Yes, the mag that controversially scored 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand higher than Killzone 2 and Street Fighter IV is clearly the right replacement for the demographic.A note on the issue of Maxim arriving in mailboxes states that the balance of customers' paid EGM subscription will be fulfilled by the

Well I've performed my duty for the day
;-)
Chad Vanderbilt (Moptimus in Disguise) @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:50PM
you seem to have finished it pretty quickly
Jack_Jackington @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:55PM
Prematurely?
Ghen @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:55PM
matter of fact he finished it first.
BananaBoat @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:30PM
He finished it as he was opening his mail box
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:44PM
By the time I read this, he'd already come out with the sequel.
Heavytoka @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:34PM
I guess they are counting on everyone loving Boobs lol
Heavytoka @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:35PM
Look they are smiling at us...
AvA (ice~) @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:36PM
uh, yea, because everyone does love boobs!
Saria the Cat @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:27PM
Yeah, and this sucks for its female subscribers like me. Maxim's a totally different type of magazine, and not everyone finds it appropriate (though I'm fine with it) --- I'm sure they'll get some hatemail over this from angry families and women. Pretty dumb move IMHO.
BigFat @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:31PM
Yeah i can see little jimmy getting this in the mail at home, he probably thinks he got his hands on a playboy or something.
BananaBoat @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:40PM
I had never read an issue of Maxim before I got it in exchange for EGM. I'm shocked at how few pictures are in the magazine. It's like 5 parts advertisements, 3 parts articles, and 2 parts pictures. Were I in the market for a girly mag, this is probably the last one on earth I'd ever subscribe to.
That I have to call them to get a refund, instead of being able to do it over the internet, just adds icing to the cake. (I've canceled multiple Ziff Davis magazines in the past year. The online mechanism for doing so is fairly straight forward, and there is no excuse for them not giving us the option now).
I'm not overly offended that they figured I wouldn't mind having Maxim as a substitute for EGM. What really saddens me is that the final memory I'll have of EGM is one of calling Ziff Davis to cancel the subscription to Maxim that I never wanted, asked for, or was open to receiving.
PR0F3TA @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:51PM
hey BananaBoat if your not a girl then be easy, you got a subscription to a good magazine... if u don't want it then fine, but why would that be your last memory of some gaming mag lol.
EGM is dead, instead of not getting anything i got a free Maxim subscription. is that so bad?
Erik Stroud @ Jun 22nd 2009 11:05PM
I love boobs, but I don't like Maxim. The internet was made for boobs. Or you can just look at your wife's or girl friends boobs too. I had 19 issues left of EGM. Now some of them will be wasted.
offday @ Jun 22nd 2009 11:45PM
Good thing I didn't bother re-newing my subscription. It just expired. And didn't EGM just celebrate some milestone? Like 300th issue or something like that? So much for that.
lawlersauce @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:35PM
lol
Uncanny valley
Doesn't seem too uncanny to me...

Gay.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:25PM
@Sly: Maybe for you. Not for me.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:29PM
maxim sucks, it isnt even a real nude mag like playboy, it really does have a shitload of articles.
BigFat @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:34PM
"it really does have a shitload of articles. "
lol!
thats why we read'em!
Sly @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:38PM
@Saria
well for your average girl, i guess it would be a bad trade.
@Wayne
yeah, if you're really looking for the best stuff, then even playboy sucks. you can get the best stuff for free... BUT maxim does have some good stuff for the ones that don't do nude pics like MEGAN FOX. that alone makes it worthy IMO.
Chad Vanderbilt (Moptimus in Disguise) @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:42PM
@Saria
It gives you something to strive for
Why so misogynistic?
PR0F3TA @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:55PM
i'm with Sly on this one... ppl here are weird sometimes
DWells55 @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:36AM
Anyone know how to get a refund from them without the effort and 40 odd cents of a written letter?
Doctor John Smith @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:51AM
"ppl here are weird sometimes"
It's really sad when objectifying women is the norm, and those who don't care for it are the weird ones.
Tyler @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:37PM
I thought I clicked on my "special" bookmark for a second there.

You mean I get free tits for my old subscription to a dead magazine? And this is.....Bad?
Ghen @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:56PM
bloggers are jaded individuals ;)
mcatrage @ Jun 22nd 2009 11:05PM
Free tits are found online not in Maxim magazine.
MrKlorox @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:21AM
It's not free. You already payed for it as EGM and didn't get your money back.
Doctor John Smith @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:49AM
1. The magazine itself objectifies women in a disgusting manner
2. This only furthers the stereotype that gamers are creepy, sexist, lonely morons.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 23rd 2009 1:06AM
@Doctor John Smith: Not to mention no one ASKED for Maxim but the company just assumed that the same reader base of EGM would want it as an apology, since all gamers are grown men and all men like boobies. No one considered that maybe, just maybe, there are EGM subscribers that are gay men, heterosexual women, young children, married heterosexual men, or heterosexual men with good taste for which this content is unwanted and/or inappropriate.
Monkeydog @ Jun 23rd 2009 3:11AM
But boobs!
Danny @ Jun 23rd 2009 7:41AM
@ Dr John Smith
1. Those women actually chose to do Maxim. They weren't kidnapped or anything. Women CAN actually make decisions for themselves this century :)
2. Do gay magazines objectify men? Face it, sex sells. It's what the world runs on.
3. Funnily enough, the VAST majority of of EGM subscribers were straight males, which is presumably why the company took this action.
I'm not saying it was a good move (it's retarded), but apparently they didn't want to give people partial refunds or a choice in what they receive. Face it, you're not going to please everyone. EGM could have been replaced with NYT and there'll be some people screaming out about how offended they are as they prefer the Post. However, as far as damage limitation goes, this is the wrong way to do it, and EGM/Maxim will learn that. I personally hope that the likes of Saria and anyone else who doesn't want Maxim will get their money back as well as an apology, but there's no reason to come out and scream bloody murder at the fact that some teenagers have received SICK MYSOGYNISTIC DISGUSTING MAGAZINES, is there?
sam @ Jun 23rd 2009 8:56AM
@Saria - I wonder how much of a difference there actually is between the proportion of females who read EGM vs. Maxim? I mean, I don't know, but it would be kind of amusing if they were about the same...
Personally I'd be slightly offended to receive a copy of Maxim (...come to that, for a different reason I'd be offended by any such substitution if they didn't actively ask me first, even if the substitute magazine is Knitting Monthly) but I don't subscribe to any gaming magazines so I think I'm safe.
Doctor John Smith @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:41PM
1. Those women actually chose to do Maxim. They weren't kidnapped or anything. Women CAN actually make decisions for themselves this century :)
So if a woman chooses to degrade herself and make herself an object for men, it's not sexist? What it is is a select few women feeding into the sexism that continues to pervade our culture, for whatever reasons they have.
2. Do gay magazines objectify men? Face it, sex sells. It's what the world runs on.
I'm guessing that not all gay magazines do in fact objectify men, that magazines about homosexuality could focus on what it means to be homosexual in this day and age, not "OMG look at that hot person." In addition, the existence of gay magazines does not do anything to hurt the people represented in said magazine, the existence of magazines such as maxim serve to only further continue the sexism of this age.
3. Funnily enough, the VAST majority of of EGM subscribers were straight males, which is presumably why the company took this action.
The vast majority of straight males don't want subscriptions to this magazine, for reasons already listed by Saria: "young children, married heterosexual men, or heterosexual men with good taste for which this content is unwanted and/or inappropriate." What happened is they assumed that the vast majority of EGM subscribers, being gamers, would be neither married, nor men of good taste, which is just incredibly insulting.

1. So if a woman chooses to degrade herself and make herself an object for men, it's not sexist?
--nope don't see anything wrong with that
What it is is a select few women feeding into the sexism that continues to pervade our culture, for whatever reasons they have.
--oh please stop being a prude. Sexy photos of women is not advancing sexism in our culture or any of that bullshit. What about men in porn, or male models? Are they pervading our culture with sexism towards men?
2. Do gay magazines objectify men? Face it, sex sells. It's what the world runs on.

--I think Danny misworded his argument here, he meant magazines like Maxim or Playboy that cater to gay people (i.e. have nude/seminude pics of men). There are many "gay" magazines that do what you describe doctor, as are there many women magazines. You're just going into a whole different unrelated area here.
3. Funnily enough, the VAST majority of of EGM subscribers were straight males, which is presumably why the company took this action.

--well can't argue with this, it really is stupid of them to give Maxim subscriptions to everyone. If I get one in the mail (not sure 'cause I had one of them 'free' subscriptions) I know I'll be cancelling it.
gst @ Jun 25th 2009 10:53PM
"Sexy photos of women is not advancing sexism in our culture or any of that bullshit."
Um, are you sure about that? I mean Maxim may not be the primary culprit in the ubiquity of unrealistic and insipid portrayals of sexuality in this society, but it certainly is a part of the problem.
It's easy, even reasonable, to set something like Maxim aside as minor when there are clear examples of outright misogyny elsewhere in our culture, but the case can still be made that giving a 13-year-old boy a subscription to Maxim, expecting that he will "read" it regularly, will likely skew his view of and respect for the opposite sex... well, if his view of women isn't already substantially skewed by other messages and media.
" What about men in porn, or male models? Are they pervading our culture with sexism towards men?"
Yeah. Not in the same way, but yeah. It accounts for stereotyping moreso than the serious discrimination associated with the term sexism, but I am annoyed and uncomfortable, if not insulted when someone assumes that any male in their mid-20s must be motivated solely by the desire to oggle, woo, and subsequently hump any "hot" female in sight. Again, is it a huge issue compared to the larger problems of sexism? No. But is it a contributing factor? Yes. And as such, I don't think it should be dismissed so hastily.
I guess it is sort of jumping the gun to rag on Maxim on a gaming blog, considering that the pages EGM likely had their fair share of overly-sexualized women as well.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:39PM
That sticker's very close to boob town. I would have been pretty pissed if Maxim blocked my view to Jennifer Love Hewitt's awesome rack.
As bad as EGM was near the end, I can't say I mind them doing this. Specially since I had like 3 years of free subscritption from giveaways.

Dopple Boppler @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:46PM
Man I'm so ticked about this. Last summer I signed up for some survey website and did like 50 dollars worth of surveys to get a subscription to Cigar Aficionado for the sole purpose of having my mail person think I was a sophisticated gentleman with a fine taste in cigars. And now, right after my subscription has run out I get boobie mags addressed to me in the mail. Ugh, this is going to not only take a renewed subscription to Cigar Aficionado, but also a subscription to Entrepreneur, Wine Spectator and maybe the Spanish version of Time, just to be safe.
Comet @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:49PM
Why do you give a fuck what your mailman thinks of you?
Ghen @ Jun 22nd 2009 9:58PM
Don't forget The New Yorker. Nobody really reads that, its just for the self promotion.
Chad Vanderbilt (Moptimus in Disguise) @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:11PM
I suggest getting a subscription to The Monthly Monocle Report. Best decision I ever made
