Ubisoft's collaboration with Q Entertainment likely to be a music game

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Ubisoft executive director Alain Corre offered substantial hints that the new project may be a music game. First, he described Q as "very advanced and specialised in how to exploit the music genre."
GI followed up by asking about Ubisoft's interest in entering the market and competing with Guitar Hero and the like. "We have been researching the music genre a lot," Corre said. "We know some iterations of music games are working very well in the music category. There are a lot of new things to invent in the future with voice or dance, so we're very much looking at what we can do in that respect."
This is no absolute guarantee that "Codename Eden" is some kind of music game, but the proximity of the two statements is interesting. And the prospect of a new music game from the creator of Space Channel 5 and Rez is wonderful.

Completely off-topic, but... I'd really love to see a collaboration between Q Entertainment, Grasshopper Manufacture, and Platinum Games. I'm sure they'd come up with some genuinely wicked fun.

I really hope it's NOT a music game. We have enough of those, guys. Really.
Neuromancer @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:37PM
It's not going to be a Guitar Hero clone if that's what you're worried about.
Storm Eagle @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:44PM
No. But we already have Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Rock Revolution, Singstar, Dance Dance Revolution, Karaoke Revolution, Lips, DJ Hero, Scratch: The Ultimate DJ and all their subsidiaries. I think we're good.

You forgot Elite Beat Agents, Electroplankton, etc. But seriously? The music-game market is hardly oversaturated. It's just another genre of games and it's not like there's more music games available out there than, for instance, first person shooters. Sure, the Guitar Hero franchise is being whored out like the dirty hooker it is, but that's just one type of music game out of a limitless amount of possibilities.
I'll say the music genre is being overtapped the minute "Accordian Hero" is released. But until that day, I say bring on the new music IP's. And you DON'T need to sell new music IP's with new plastic peripherials. Rhythm Heaven was awesome and didn't require an expensive Chinese-made plastic dongle. Except for the stylus but that's beside the point.
Ha... dongle.

But if it was something like another Rez or JSRF, then bring it on.
xtremeholymuffin @ Jun 22nd 2009 7:02PM
lol, how is JSRF a music game, besides having an awesome soundtrack?
yojimb0 @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:25PM
A next gen Mizuguchi game could be very, very awesome.
Debikul @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:27PM

Storm Eagle @ Jun 22nd 2009 3:43PM
Maybe that's what they want you to speculate...?
alienterrorist @ Jun 22nd 2009 3:22PM
YEAH!!! This is a GREAT IDEA!!! I mean, its not like we have too many music games or anything!
emirabal @ Jun 22nd 2009 3:38PM

Old_Snake @ Jun 22nd 2009 4:43PM
I like Rez and Space Channel 5 quite a bit, so I agree, another title in that vein would be wonderful
Metal Gear!? @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:22PM
Since this is an old story and no one will read this message... Rez is an overrated piece of trash.
