Speaking to MCV, Activision CEO Mike Griffith was feeling pretty confident about his company's position in the game industry this year. "This is the best competitive position we've ever had," said Griffith, adding, "Our titles are strong, and competitive titles are a little sparser than in the past." Griffith sounds particularly proud of the Guitar Hero franchise, which he notes has its strongest lineup ever with DJ Hero, Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero all set to release this year (what, no love for Van Halen?). Griffith also mentioned Modern Warfare 2, which he says will be the biggest Call of Duty ever (no surprises there). And let's not forget Tony Hawk's Ride and Bizarre's upcoming racer, Blur.
Griffith doesn't seem concerned by competition from The Beatles: Rock Band either, saying quite simply, "Well, Rock Band is the most similar title on the market, but Guitar Hero outsells it by four to one in the US; in Europe that number is ten to one." Okay then. Griffith also shakes off the notion that Activision is flooding the market with peripheral-based games (Ride and all of the Guitar Hero games rely on peripherals), stating that the company only uses peripherals when they "define a magical experience that comes about when you marry hardware and software."
Other topics covered in the interview include Griffith's feelings about Natal and the Playstation Motion Controller, Activision's business in Europe and the continued importance of retail.

I just don't get all of the commercial love for Guitar Hero, particularly Guitar Hero: World Tour. I have it, but I just don't find it all that fun. On the other hand, I've poured countless hours into Rock Band 1 & 2 and could still play some more.
World Tour just felt tedious to me, and vocals are just downright brutal.

The only reason Guitar Hero outsells Rock Band is because of the brand name and older parents buying the 'brand name' for their kids.

Guitar Hero sells because Harmonix made a couple great games that set the stage and now Activision takes all the credit, calling Rock Band a "competitor" and not the original.

I guess he forgot that its Activision BLIZZARD. He forgot to mention StarCraft II, or did he? Go on fanboi's, blog some more about delays!
Any major fuck up they do is auto-healed by the mammoth subscriber payments to WoW.

Either activision has the worst publicist or Mike is such a douche that he doesn't realize that he is systematically making everyone hate him and his company. Whoopty fuckin doo guitar hero out sells rockband, an accomplishment through a scewed perspective. I can't wait for him to get knocked off his high horse screw mike and activision.
i only wish i didn't have to buy mordern warfare 2 and star craft 2
oh and people won't forget that Harmonix are the originators, activision can only bank on stolen inginuity for so long......

I cut myself off when I have to buy more than one peripheral for a game. What happened to the controllers being good enough? Look at Elite Beat Agents! Parappa the Rapper! Space Channel 5!

idk, The Beatles will definitely give them a run for their money. They finally have a simultaneous multiplat launch, and they'll own the Boomer market.

It really is getting a lot of promotion and the word of mouth seems to be selling itself to people that aren't regular gamers, but they are already excited to pick it up when it's released.
I've just been mentioning this game to older people or people that aren't even really into video games, but they are all huge Beatles fans and are planning on purchasing it.

I never understood the "Screw EA!" rants, but Activision is starting to make me cringe.

Funny... I'm not planning on buying a single one of those games. I guess the competition isn't sparse after all huh?

I love GH and RB2.
I have every gh game since aerosmith (after selling 3) and RB2. I will buy GH5 because the box art actually looks professional and not a bunch of cartoons rocking out and because I can play my world tour dlc.

It matters because it looks like they are actually serious about this game. Maybe they aren't just slapping it on a disc, it looks like this will be one of the best Guitar Hero games. Instead of being all cartoony about it the box art looks realistic.
Yet I can't get over the name, there was never an official Guitar Hero 4.

It's because people like you that they are raping the GH franchise every year. I would rather buy something like Rockband where I can just buy music every now and then instead of having to buy full priced games just so that I can get new and good music.

I didn't care much for World Tour, but I'm still playing RB2 almost a year later. GH 5 looks like it has some good groups, but the interface still irritates me more than RB's. 5 may be better, we'll see. I'll definitely get Beatles.

Singstar should have done the beatles, every instrument except vocals are EASY. How about Disturbed Rck Band? I think it would be sick to see Davd Draiman in cartoon form. But in my opinion rock bands characters are more cartoonish than GH, yet for some reason I would rather see Dusturbed in Rock Band.

What the hell is wrong with this guy. Talk about douchebag.
It's really unfortunate that ignorance is what keeps this company going. If everyone knew the truth and weren't so blind to their practices, maybe we could put these guys back in their place. But it doesn't look like that will be happening.
All I can do as an individual is continue to support the good guys and NOT support douchebags like this

Well I for one won't be supporting Activision again. After those comment's he mad reguarding PS3 last week left me feeling sour for this publisher. I was going to get modern warfare 2, but now I'm going to get M.A.G. instead. Tony Hawks Ride is going to flop and that's because of the price of the skate board.
I really think this CEO of Activision is going through a mid life crysis. Either shut up now or keep digging a hole is what I say

I felt uncomfortable for his statements too...
Well, at least CoD:MW2 will be coming.
I hope it ends as a bluff, because if Activision were to really cut PS3 development,
it will be a huge loss for overseas(U.S & Europe) divisions (Sony's perspective, as a Japanese company).
I know PS3 needs a price cut, but its hard for Sony too.
Cause they still can't make any profits from selling PS3,
because it costs more to make one.

because of the same reason as them releasing all these guitar heroes. They are greedy little sod's. They want your money. I wonder how much profit they will make off the board.
Is anyone on this website gonna purchase tony hawks ride? I'm just curious

Who cares about ACTIVISION they suck anyways. I wont buy anything from them every again. that GH world tour sucked donkey balls. the drum set was crap the moment it went into the box. and after the update it still messed up. and there are like 40 fps on the market now so I have nothing but choices so screw MW2 as well!

As a Wii owner, Activision has nothing I want. I don't play guitar games and Infinity Ward won't make a game for Wii. There are plenty of other publishers willing to put out games for me. Thank you Sega and EA.
