Brutal Legend box art unveiled, tiny [update: not so tiny anymore!]

Somehow, the itty-bitty, teeny-tiny reveal of the official Brütal Legend box art seems inappropriate. Given that the game itself has a huge personality and contains physically huge landmarks within its digital realm -- including things like a massive corpse pile, for example -- and some other big things -- big battles, big hair, etc -- the limited size of Gamestop's art seems pathetically small. Honestly, this isn't nearly big enough to fill the specially reserved spot on the Joysitq poster wall (right next to Shia, of course).
We suppose it will have to do. For now.
Update: Victory! EA has relinquished high-res versions of the cover art in what can only be described as an epic win for METAL. Make with the clicking below.

MystileArmor @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:56PM
You're supposed to say NUTSHIT!
(Suck my balls, Dwells)
Premature ejaculation man @ Jun 23rd 2009 8:17PM
You say nutshit a lot and I don't know why =(
MystileArmor @ Jun 23rd 2009 11:13PM
There was an article about Brutal Legend and something about how the word "Nutshit" was invented and Schafer said it would be a word that'll be adapted by everyone at some point.
Just trying to help Tim spread the word. Literally.
B @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:22PM
That's... No thanks...
James @ Jun 23rd 2009 7:02PM
Yeah, I was expecting something straight out of the 80's album artwork that the game is based on. Stylized versions of the characters, in full heavy-metal glory, complete with airbrushed metal and things. Oh well....
Rob @ Jun 23rd 2009 8:09PM
Could be worse, they could just be standing there doing nothing.
GANNONSMASH @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:24PM
Game looks incredible.
Boxart does not.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:32PM
Your nutshit crazy! That box art is nutshit!

UK version is different.

Alphathon @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:48PM
I think I prefer the US version
meist3r @ Jun 24th 2009 5:12AM
Actually I believe the one you mentioned is a prerelease mockup. Tim Schafer mentioned over and over again how much he likes having designer names on the boxes to honor the makers and the same box art that you posted is listed at Amazon.co.uk with a release in September. I think they're not up to date with that. Also Eddie's fist is covering a part of the title (unusual), there is no region info (no PAL logo in the upper right), the EA/Doublefine Logos are way small and also ... the image looks awfully familiar:
http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14210507/br252tal-legend/images/br252tal-legend-20090601022247091.html;jsessionid=anu5eam33da95
So I think it's safe to assume that we will get the same awesomeness that is this box art posted in the article.
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:27PM
Lol. You guys didn't think that they're be enough clicks for this article so you linked to the flamewar du jour?
Ashkental @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:36PM
GREAT Game!
Stupid Boxart!
EncodedNybble @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:34PM
Where is all the hype for this game coming from? Seemed to come out of nowhere. Perhaps I missed a memo somewhere.
I also, personally, think it might suck.
Markusdragon @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:38PM
Man who thinks game appeared out of nowhere makes uninformed opinion.
More at 11.
EncodedNybble @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:48PM
Lol, I'm not uninformed. I've seen it floating around on joystiq and misc. other sites for a while now. I guess my question is more of "this game doesn't seem to add anything new or interesting to gaming, what's all the hype about then?"
Like I said maybe I am not seeing something.
Hype for LBP, I understand. Hype for metroids/marios/zeldas/resident evils/MGS I understand. Hype for indy games I also understand.
Yes, I understand it's Schafer. Yes I loved all of the old time Lucas Arts stuff he's worked on. Yes, Psychonauts was great. To me this just seems like an action/adventure game with Jack Black-esque humor, so I think that I'm missing something.
Gun Barrier @ Jun 23rd 2009 7:35PM
You're not alone. I have no idea why everyone is excited for this game either. Maybe because of all the real people the characters are based on?
Skaz @ Jun 23rd 2009 7:44PM
Because the guy who did this made Psychonauts.
ArchiGamer @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:34PM
Not much fan of the color but other than that THIS FUCKING NUTSHIT!!!
ArchiGamer @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:36PM
*IS
Einhanderkiller @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:36PM
I would've preferred warmer colors like red and orange.
Shagittarius @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:37PM
Says the guy who's icon matches the color scheme exactly.
Alphathon @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:54PM
That doesn't matter - he's right. The avatar isn't necessarily trying to embody the aggression etc of metal, which Brütal Legend is, and which is what red/organge would have done. Just look at almost any Manowar cover (e.g. The Triumph Of Steel. Avoid Into Glory Ride amd Fighting the World though, they're just homo-erotic)
david c @ Jun 23rd 2009 9:56PM
Well it may be an issue of standing out in-store. Reading Valves post about the evolution of Left 4 Dead's box art, they strayed away from the reds in part because during testing they noticed most game's already use reds and blacks for box art. So although on it's own their "red" designs stood out and looked sweet, once on a shelf it blends right in. As for the color on this case, I haven't seen many games following a similar color scheme and since this title isn't quite up in the ranks of a Halo or a GTA in terms consumer awareness, it could benefit from standing out in-store.
Shagittarius @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:37PM
I wonder if we're going to get a PC version. I hope they announce it before they release the console versions. I'd rather have my perfered platform to play it on, and no, I don't double dip.
Old_Snake @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:47PM
Boxart seems okay to me. Either way this game is going to rock
Petebot330 @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:50PM
Does every company that ut their hand on the game have to have their logo on the front? and that largely? I mean the Xbox logo alone takes up 1/8th of the cover.
Also, where do they put movie ratings on DVDs? I think that's on the back, isn't it? To make room for the nice cover?
Crusty Magic @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:51PM
The box art on games never seems to emphasize what you actually DO in the game...
ryan @ Jun 24th 2009 10:19AM
Could use a few dragons and naked lay-dehs, but I'm satisfied. Game will be awesome.
capt_carl @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:59PM
The box art seems so low-key for the awesomeness that awaits inside.
MaxShrek @ Jun 23rd 2009 7:49PM
I like games like this that aren't currently rated by the ESRB.. Seeing "RP" on this after seeing all of the screens is silly!
Richie_Tozier @ Jun 23rd 2009 8:28PM
Meh. Its starting to grow on me though.
Vcize @ Jun 23rd 2009 8:33PM
While it really wasn't what I was expecting for the cover of this game (was thinking there would be more black, red, and dark gold or silver), it still looks pretty cool.
Tracy Evans @ Jun 23rd 2009 8:56PM
Odd color choices. Seems neither brutal nor legendary.
But it great to see the name Tim Schaffer on a modern game box!
Blah @ Jun 23rd 2009 9:20PM
im guessing its shiny like the bioshock case. but in a more epic way
Xvnine @ Jun 24th 2009 12:02AM
The hell, where's the red?
meist3r @ Jun 24th 2009 5:19AM
Pre-ordered the Euro Version yesterday. Can't wait to go all nutshit ...
Markusdragon @ Jun 24th 2009 6:24AM
Fair enough. Although seeing as Amazon weren't even taking preorders for the game until a few days ago, there's no excuse whatsoever that they have the wrong release date. Useless gits.
