Anyone have details on how this went down? Was id private or publicly owned? I don't think this is necessarily a bad merger, it's just a bit surprising and there don't seem to be many details about the how it came about.

I doubt I'm alone in hoping id Tech 5 makes it to a future Fallout title, but I probably am alone in hoping that means we'll get a Fallout game on the Mac.

That's like me wanting games like LittleBigPlanet, Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear Solid 4, Fable 2, Dragonball Z: Burst Limit, etc. coming to the PC. Sadly not gonna happen. I'll just have to wait a very very long time if ever for a PS3 emulator for the PC. : D

Why not just use Boot Camp and boot Windows and play these games? It takes a lot of time and money to have to create separate versions of a game when Apple users can easily run a Windows OS.

That is one bizarre analogy.

EA managed to have the retail version of The Sims 3 support PC and Mac at launch through their use of Transgaming's Cider wrapper. No major amount of specific development needed. John Carmack has already stated that id Tech 5 would support the Mac platform. In fact, it was announced at an Apple event (WWDC 2007).

There are plenty of options without busting a gut for the niche Mac audience.

Fallout 3 was a multi-platform title. Bethesda now has access to an engine that will work on an additional platform. Hoping a sequel comes out on that additional platform, and uses this otherwise superior engine, isn't at all like hoping a system-exclusive title makes the leap.

I have a PC, I have an Xbox 360. I used the latter to clock over 100 hours of Fallout 3. However, as my Mac is more powerful than my PC and more portable than my Xbox 360, having a sequel on the Mac would be perfect for me.

I would say gaming on a Mac is dead, but it never was alive.

As long as it doesn't do anything to hinder what quakecon is now / in future years
I'm all for it. I can see some great games coming of this.
And as long as they don't move their facilities out of DFW. Gearbox and them are the only two in the area that I'll have to go for after I get my degree, that is if I head into game development and not something else. (CSE Major)

Cool..so this means when Doom 4 comes out on XBOX360/PS3 first before PC, it will have "exclusive" DLC to the XBOX360. When it does finally come to PC, it will have "porting issues" and run horribly on high end PC's on low settings.

"Mass piracy" will ensue! (typical #'s or less due to the game being 99% eye candy and 1% boring rehash 90's FPS gameplay)

Then John Carmack will make a PR "Due to the mass piracy of Doom4 we have decided not to port Doom5 or any other reiterations of our products to the PC market. We feel that the console market ensures a level playing field and hardware we can base off of. We're quite excited as well with a new relationship with Microsoft in dealing exclusive DLC. Doom5 ships with half the game incomplete, DLC mission packs and multiplayer mappacks for 10$ are avaible at launch. Yes they are actually 100kb patches to unlock what's already on your disc. Enjoy the boring game play, the flashlight returns from doom3 btw."

That's exactly what I am afraid of as well. I don't mind at all with the PC getting console ports, as long as they are well optimized and will get all the features the console versions will get, like DLC or a multiplayer option (Ghostbuster :cough: cough:).

"many will agree that graphics tech is far from Bethesda's strong suit"

I wouldn't. Yes, Bethesda (or Gamebryo) has been challenged in the character animation department, but Oblivion and Fallout 3 have some of the best-looking environments we've seen in the last few years. Anyone who has spent time walking around the hills of Cyrodiil and watched the sun set through the trees would not say that graphics are a weakness for the developer.

I'm surprised no one brought up the fact that this is a major blow for EA. id was set to publish their next game under EA and this kind of kills the Valve, Harmonix, id, indy trifecta they had going on.

Ok... 3DRealms is up next. Duke Nukem Forever anyone? :P

Just kidding.... fat chance.

Anyway, this development was surprising yet expected at the same time. I mean John Carmack was smart here joining forces with yet another business all the while maintaining control over actual development of the games that the new id will crank out. This would also mean that the id Tech 4 engine will still be on its way to being open-sourced and the id logo will still be stamped on the boxes of their products (alongside ZeniMax's logo for publishing). To me, I don't see anything changing... just more money being added to the equation. That's all.
