I've never really been into Silent Hill but for Resi just dont scare me anymore, so I'll pick this up to see if it lives up to its reputation of scariness.

This is really the first Wii game I'm totally excited for. It seems like the deep, mature game everyone has been asking for.

Aside from a few of the usual suspects on the Wii in terms of deep 1P games (Zelda, Mario, NMH, Z&W, etc.?) I must admit this is one of the titles I've been most excited about. I heard Homecoming on 360/PS3 was pretty so-so, but this genuinely sounds like it has a lot of potential.

Typically my preferred games on the console are fun multiplayer ones like Kart or Boom Blox...

Sounds good but I still wonder how there gonna make it work with the other Silent Hill story's. Though they better not butcher it like they did with Home Coming.

This is being done by the same team that did Origins, which is different again from both the Homecoming and original Silent Hill teams, so Origins should be your frame of reference.

"Is it more difficult to make something feel really scary on the Wii -- just because I think survival horror games are very dependent on the production value and graphics and sound. Like Dead Space, for instance. "

Although this was a nice interview I must say that I find this is a very bad question. Are we suddenly forgetting that the Silent Hill series (and RE) started on the PS1?? The first Silent Hill was one of the most suspenseful and scary experiences I've ever had (and many gamers had) on videogaming. The designers of that game worked around the limits of the hardware to create one of the most moody and immersive games around. I'm sure if I play it today I'll still get scared (although I'd surely detest the puzzles and combat mechanics).

so...I think we have enough evidence that you don't need powerful hardware to create a scary game.

In some ways I think the low technology helped that game out; all that fog actually added a lot to the atmosphere and made the game scary as hell.

Or maybe, he said that because what with the way game visuals have been rapidly evolving over the last few years, what once would have been semi-convincing would now come off as a little, uh, corny?

Just a thought.

Well, at the time, the PS1 was powerful hardware. I think his point is that now we have seen very good graphics, and the Wii isn't known for pushing out great visuals like the 360 or PS3.

I know that's what he was trying to imply but I still think that hardware power doesn't matter that much. It sure helps but I'm sure if I played today the old ps1 Silent HIll I'd still get scared. Heck we could play an old text adventure game and get scared if it's done right (or read a book for that matter). It's the same way we can get scared with really low budget films.

Also lets not forget Silent Hill 4: The Room didn't come out that long ago. It was for the PS2 and it was scary. They really aren't going as far as I did with my examples. They are talking about the Wii which although not new hardware by any means isn't THAT old.

What I meant with my comment is that with that question they are neglecting the thing that really made those games scary which was the great atmosphere they were able to create. For that you don't need fancy graphics, in fact the less you show the best, you must leave a part to the player's imagination...when you start to try to make up what you are not seeing then you start to get scared.

Developers haven't really put any effort into the Wii, beyond a few exceptions. What big name developers have really tried? The biggest Wii games of late have either been Nintendo efforts, or small independent developers (Madworld, Conduit, No More Heroes).

This seems like a full developer effort. So does Dead Space. Both, unsurprisingly, look kickass. Bethesda says they're making a big Wii game. Hopefully other developers will get on board.

It'll remain a casual system until the big time developers actually try. It seems like we're finally *starting* to get that.

Ah, sounds good. I take it this big Wii game wasn't unveiled at E3, then. Oh well, as long as they know what exactly goes into making great games for the Wii, then they have my support.

Team Silent gave us Silent Hill 1 and 3.

Silent Hill 2 is one of the highest regarded Silent Hills and had the same team as 4, which is poorly regarded (wrongfully in my opinion).

Saying that I'd prefer the people who worked on Origins to handle this over Homecoming, Homecoming was alright, just a bit "meh".

To be fair though, the trailer for Silent Hill 4 was really good too. I was greatly looking forward to that game. Fact is though once you got towards the end of the game you can tell the developers just got lazy and that ruined the game for me.

actually that's because silent hill 4 wasnt suppose to be a silent hill at all. they slapped the title on at the very end because they where afraid it wouldnt sell as a new game. and look what it did to the silent hill title instead.

it seems you'd rather play another silent hill that plays the exact same way as the previous 5 or so SH games? The series desperately needs a overhaul. I thought it would be with Homecoming..not so much.

Yeah, Silent Hill really needs an overhaul. Maybe they could add some zombies riding motorcycles and shooting AK-47's.

What 'needs' to happen is that people who don't like a game style 'need' to keep their grubby hands off of it, because when dev teams go changing things to suit the Halo players it always rips the soul right out of the game, craps on it, and stuffs it back into a dead corpse for marketing purposes.

Silent Hill was going along fine, all the way through and including 4. Origins made it a brawler, 5 just sucked. If the creator of the game - whose vision was obviously what made the game great - doesn't approve of your changes, your changes probably suck.

"We did that because, on the Wii, maybe there's a lot of people who haven't played any Silent Hill games, so it wasn't really fair to say, "Here's the sequel to Homecoming, enjoy yourself."

What? This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Why do you HAVE to use the original characters? Why not make some new characters? New people won't care because they don't know... so why does it matter if it's the first set of characters, the newer set of characters, or a brand new set of characters?

I've only played Silent Hill 2 but I loved it. I want to play SH3, but as its a sequel to SH1, I wanted to play that one first and was too put off by the PS1 era graphics. Hopefully playing Shattered Memories will retain enough of the original story to prepare me for SH3.

Play Silent Hill 1 on your PSP with PopsLoader and it looks much better. No texture crawl. You're missing out on a great game if you never play it.

I am a huge fan of Silent Hill. I saw the trailer, and I'm not too sure how it is all going to be. I played Origins, and actually still haven't to this day, gone all the way to the end, because I didn't really enjoy the whole weapon inventory. Using random items like once or twice and then they break. I know that makes it a little more realistic, but I just didn't like it. And that's my opinion on that, I'm sure others feel differently. I'm not sure if I am going to like the whole hiding thing and using a flare as a "weapon" because the creatures are afraid of light. I guess we shall wait and see, nothing else to do. I do agree, that they didn't have to use the same characters if it is a 're-imagining' or whatever. I have been waiting for a good horror game for the Wii though. I do wish they would bring 'Fatal Frame' to the console, as that game scared the crap out of me too, and I am hard to scare, hehe. But, yea...I will buy this game, for sure, to see how it all turns out. Oh yea, i was not a fan of part 4 either...just didnt feel like how Silent Hill should feel, it makes a lot of sense that is wasn't supposed to be part of the series?? I did not know that?!?
