Kodu gets creative on Xbox 360 June 30 [update]
Update: Microsoft got back to us with the following: "We are going through the same peer-review process that every other developer has to go through, so there isn't any way to determine when the game will actually post, but we hope that it will be somewhere near or on June 30." So, everyone is trying their best to make sure Kodu makes the June 30 release, but don't consider that date chiseled in stone.
When the official Kodu blog mentioned that the title would be available this month, it apparently wasn't lying. Xboxic is reporting the game will be available for download on the last day of this month, June 30, for a reasonable 400
. Oh, and if you're scratching your head due to Microsoft's penchant for Humpday releases, remember this is an Xbox 360 Community Game Indie Game, and not an Arcade release.
For clarification's sake, we've put in word to Microsoft to confirm and will be sure to get back to you with what we find.

This should be interesting for a short while. Seems to be worth 5 bucks if nothing else. I'm curious if you are able to share games and if so, how it works.
Neuromancer @ Jun 24th 2009 2:34PM
Yeah I don't know about this one.
Mr Khan @ Jun 24th 2009 2:36PM
The whole "Kodu/Kudo" thing is going to drive me crazy right quick.
Stix Remix @ Jun 24th 2009 2:39PM
I'm looking forward to this game.
Mazrael @ Jun 24th 2009 2:48PM
Why? What is it?
Stix Remix @ Jun 24th 2009 3:21PM
It's a "create-your-own-game" game.
Arnie @ Jun 24th 2009 2:51PM
Cool, was looking forward to it. Had hoped they would launch it on the PC but they dont seem to care about it that much.
Otis @ Jun 24th 2009 2:54PM
Wait? It's not a "real" game, but a Community game?
This went from something I was really interested in, to something I'm extremely wary of :/
(Show's the value that label carries with it, I guess)
K387 @ Jun 24th 2009 2:59PM
It only makes sense they release it as a Community Game. It wasn't really developed for commercial use, it was a research project. Besides, its less a game and more an application if you think about it.
Besides, I'm trying to imagine what kind of achievements they'd include if they did make it an XBLA arcade game.

Err, our names are right above our comment so I don't think signing your comment is necessary.
K387 @ Jun 24th 2009 3:06PM
Ya, I hear you. I'm so used to do it just about everywhere else. Its habit.
Neuromancer @ Jun 24th 2009 3:25PM
It's a community game but is made by MS.

Even though this is a "Community Game", it was developed my Microsoft's Research arm. So, buy with confidence. In fact, demo with even more confidence since demos on CG still don't cost anything.
CH3BURASHKA @ Jun 24th 2009 3:16PM
It's good that they're releasing it in Indie Games. This way, it will attract more attention to the slightly dismissed section of Xbox Live.
WiredKnight @ Jun 24th 2009 3:18PM
I thought Community Games were all only 200 points. Did that change when they made them Indie Games?
Neuromancer @ Jun 24th 2009 3:26PM
No they can be more expensive than 200.
Arashikou @ Jun 24th 2009 6:09PM
That was never the case that I saw. Developers on Community/Indie Games get to set the price on their game... within limits. You might have heard a misinterpretation of the rules about what those limits are. Games that are small (less than or about 50MB) can be priced at 200, 400, or 800 points. Larger games can be only 400 or 800, but cannot be 200.
WiredKnight @ Jun 25th 2009 10:18PM
Hm. I guess I just thought that because the few community games I tried were all 200.
izikavazo @ Jun 24th 2009 3:24PM
Uh, this is surprising news. I thought this was going to be a full retail title. I'm certainly not complaining though.
CrashSpyro123 @ Jun 24th 2009 3:35PM
i guess it really is a community or indie game since it's out in about a week and Microsoft isn't trying to promote it or make its impending greatness known.
highjumpman @ Jun 24th 2009 7:54PM
Indie Game? Will it come out in Germany? There's a whole country here that's missing out on all of the Community/Indie games due to an obscure copyright law... And if that weren't enough, arcade games such as Duke Nukem 3D and Dishwasher get banned for being "too bloody"...
NOOK @ Jun 25th 2009 10:21AM
I can easily browse & download community games trough an american silver account from Germany. It's always worth to have extra silver accounts for the US, UK and Japan :)
fuzzynyanko @ Jun 24th 2009 3:45PM
Wow. This many comments and no comparison to LittleBigPlanet yet. Anyways, it looks interesting, and the commands look similar to a lot of scripting engines I have seen.
Swagman @ Jun 24th 2009 8:25PM
Not surprised myself. You'd have to be a real douche or a serious Playstation fanboy to even attempt the comparison.
I know many a fanboy was attempting the comparison before, but I always kept saying, this would be a Community Games title, and as such, would never cost more than a maximum of $10. Of course, none of the PS fanboys would listen to that kind of reasoning. And now the game has been announced as only $5, to even mention a comparison other than to give an honest play-by-play between the two titles by someone who actually played both, would make you look stupid.
I am finally glad that it is coming out, and cannot wait to get my hands on it next week. Ought to be a lot of fun - not to mention, educational. Matter of fact, if I like it enough, then I may finally get off my lazy ass and give learning XNA Studio a shot.
If anything Kodu should prove interesting as a proof of concept tool, for more advance Indie games that can be created using XNA. I really cannot wait.
AnkleSpankle @ Jun 24th 2009 3:46PM
I was testing this earlier and i seriously hope the loading times are improved, everything apart from the actual gameplay is fast and responsive.
The menu's are really slow and sluggish and the initial loading took 3 minutes =/
*Although there's a disclaimer saying it's for technical reasons and won't be present in it's final release"
K1LLER HORNET @ Jun 24th 2009 4:16PM
cool - i'll check it out :)
SnowSoldier vGv @ Jun 24th 2009 5:30PM
This still looks like a title worth checking out.
j.howlett @ Jun 24th 2009 5:42PM
will you be able to browse levels as a silver member?
leo2178 @ Jun 24th 2009 6:19PM
Don't forget this is Microsoft we're talking about.
They will probably charge 400 points for the base game and then make construction parts or premade levels a extra charge.
John M. @ Jun 24th 2009 8:05PM
Not bad i must say. They could have easily slapped this on the Arcade and charged 1600 points for the privilege to use software that many actual 12-year-old girls surely have. Surely this is one of the *ahem* higher end XBL Indie Games to be sure seeing how Microsoft is personally pushing it. Who knows, it might actually take at that price point, surely wasn't expecting it to be free or anything.
LuiginDaisy @ Jun 24th 2009 10:12PM
I'm just going to wait and see how good of a game this is. The price for this game makes me feel like there's something fishy. I'll look on youtube a couple of days after it's released, and see if there's a high amount of playability.
ben @ Jun 25th 2009 1:07AM
Im currently thinking about how they have dated Kodu when it is not even in peer review yet. I guess we will find out shortly either way.
I will post my thoughts about using Kodu on my blog farily regularly.
