id Software bringing external development back in-house
When Raven Software's long-in-development Wolfenstein (remember when it was an Xbox 360 timed exclusive back in 2005?) finally hits store shelves this August, it'll mark the end of an era ...
... oh no! Not of Wolfenstein games – there are plenty more of those coming – but of outside developers working on id Software's hallowed franchises. John Carmack told Joystiq today that bringing external development back in-house at id is "exactly what's going to be happening." Carmack says that while id's had some hits (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory springs to mind) and some misses (Enemy Territory: Quake Wars springs to mind) the externally developed titles haven't "had the same record that our internally developed titles have." We'd have to agree with him there.
With the lead team cranking on Rage for EA Partners, they created a second development team to work on Doom 4, with a still-formative third team currently toiling away on Quake Live. "We'll have three teams," Carmack told us. "We'll have Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, and Rage and one of them will be taking a vacation each cycle and that will depend on what we want to be doing each time." So don't worry, you'll have plenty of all of the above to go around.

Michael Jackson is dead. Sorry to be the guy who has to tell you.
Ihavepants @ Jun 25th 2009 8:06PM
And what the fuck does this have to do with id Software?
This shouldn't even be covered by the "real" media as much as it is, don't bring this celebrity worship bullshit to the vidya.
The Baron @ Jun 25th 2009 9:19PM
Some article in two months will link back this one and nobody will have any idea what's going on here.
Spartan @ Jun 25th 2009 7:04PM
Off topic:
Michael Jackson has been confirmed dead.
R.I.P The greatest entertainer of all time.
Shagittarius @ Jun 25th 2009 7:16PM
Are they gonna cremate him or just melt him down?
Shagittarius @ Jun 25th 2009 7:19PM
If they melt him down they can turn him into Wii's for little boys to play with.
GiggMan @ Jun 25th 2009 7:20PM
When Shagg dies he's getting flushed.
PoS
Spartan @ Jun 25th 2009 7:25PM
shittytarius is already dead to many people.
hence the attention seeking online.
Shagittarius @ Jun 25th 2009 7:26PM
I'm upset that your original post is so off topic my jokes are going to get deleted along with it. At least my comments had some connection to VGs ultimately.
Levi @ Jun 25th 2009 7:43PM
yeah dude, everyone heard about this like yesterday, we don't need to know about it on Joystiq.
DarkNessBear @ Jun 25th 2009 7:46PM
Yea Levi... you sure about yesterday? Levi is now the number 1 suspect in the homicide case.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 25th 2009 9:02PM
@ spartan
if you are to continue calling Shagi that childish name, I am afraid I will dub you SHARTAN. I will spare your already taxed imagination by suggestin Dicker or Dicka Man in your retort.
Levi @ Jun 26th 2009 12:11AM
wow, you fail as does everyone who voted you up, because your sarcasm detectors all broke.
Shadsy @ Jun 25th 2009 7:16PM
I'm really excited about this. The id guys are geniuses (Doom 3 was made by only about 30 people), but they've only put out three games in the past decade. The more they bring back in-house, the better.
The Alex @ Jun 25th 2009 7:19PM
Interesting. Sounds almost like Carmack is thinking long term with the Rage franchise... he must be confident in it's success. I also like the whole cycle system, where one franchise will sit a cycle out. I'd love to see a company like EA adopt that same model for it's sports franchises. Each year, a different sport "sits out". But for EA, considering how big the company is, they could maybe cycle another sport in. Maybe a CFL game one year, or Rugby, or whatever.

Also, despite it's off topic-ness: I'm sad to hear of the loss my Michael Jackson. Despite all the tabloid media garbage, I hope he's remember as the true entertainer he was and all the great music he brought the world. He died before his time.
The Alex @ Jun 25th 2009 7:21PM
@Shagittarius - You are sad and pathetic. Cheap shots at someone who just passed away, regardless of who they are, is never funny. If Joystiq had any respect, they'd ban you from posting on their blogs forever.
Spartan @ Jun 25th 2009 7:28PM
I completely agree with Alex.
I, the undersigned start a petition to perma-ban this person forom this network of sites.

Humor is a way of coping with death. Even if the person who died was a celebrity. Tell me did you have any nice remarks when you heard that Anna Nicole Smith died? This is a video game blog, if you want to celebrity gossip go to TMZ.
For fucks sake people, this isn't news, I'm sure its all over CNN right now like Ledger's death. The king of pop is dead and 20 years too late.
The Alex @ Jun 25th 2009 8:44PM
@Shmil, the arguement that humor is a way of coping is completely wrong. I'm sure when someone you care for dies, you won't be cracking jokes within a few hours of hearing about it.
You are right, this is a gaming blog, and maybe it's not the right forum for this kind of discussion. Clearly, with idiots like Shagatarius around, there is a lack of maturity in dealing with "real world" situations.
And your comments about him dying 20 years to late shows that you are nothing more than a heartless bastard who needs a reality check real soon.
Spartan @ Jun 25th 2009 8:59PM
Ok, I can admit when im wrong.
gaming blog = wrong place
Jansperus @ Jun 25th 2009 9:17PM
People like Shag and Schmil are like Perez Hilton: to validate their own existences, they must shit on others. It's like how some messed up kids will torture puppies: it's cruel and serves no actual function, but to hurt those puppies somehow mitigates their own pain. As children cartoons have proven, the cool kids are apathetic jerks, which is why people try to act as douchey and apathetic as they can.
Shmil @ Jun 25th 2009 9:22PM
So the people complaining about the celebrity gossip are compared to one of the biggest douches in that field? That makes perfect sense. The reason I wish Jackson died 20 years ago? That way we would've remembered him at his peak rather than the creepy pedophile that the media turned him into.
relaxeder @ Jun 25th 2009 7:23PM
That's great. I think Raven did a decent job with Quake 4, and hopefully Wolfenstein will be awesome, but nobody does id's games like id does.
And yeah, sad news about Michael Jackson.
CitizenErased @ Jun 25th 2009 8:06PM
I respect Raven but I can't wait to see a new WOlfenstein game made by id entirely.
almackay @ Jun 25th 2009 8:27PM
This sounds actually pretty bad ass. I could definitely deal with more id titles regularly.
Jansperus @ Jun 25th 2009 9:18PM
This news makes me happy because id Software is happy contained in a disc.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 25th 2009 9:51PM
Hexen and Heretic aren't in that image, for shame Joystiq.
Mr Khan @ Jun 25th 2009 10:29PM
This thread has been completely pirated in honor of Michael Jackson.
Now if only we could get some old-school Doom sprites to moonwalk, it wouldn't be so radically off-topic.
