no benefit to Zenimax. Bethesda should first learn how to make a good fun game, not senseless disappointing boredom that Fallout 3 and Oblivion are. If they acquire id, then they'll have even more senseless disappointing boring games, given id's track record, yes good technology demos but crap games.

Very good interview as always Christopher. Well, even if there's probably a lot going on that we don't know about, I have to say that everything they said made a lot of sense business wise. Two highly successful companies, both critically and commercially, joining forces. Interesting time indeed.

"But the landscape's changed a lot over 15 or 20 years and the stakes are so high now, when it costs tens of millions of dollars to make a game, and then the marketing budgets are tens of millions of dollars more. And the game's [development] take place over the space of 4 years."

"It's been great that every title that we've done internally has been a huge success, but when you've got 50 or 100 people on there, all their families and everyone counting on you there, the idea of "What if you screw up once?" or "What if the market changes?" Some of the things that can be completely outside of your control, that can turn something from a major hit to just an also-ran on there, and the dynamics of the successes in the markets and all these things on there at least made us somewhat more concerned about things."

I think those two quote combined express the fairly difficult and volatile nature of the gaming landscape out there these days and why what used to be powerhouse independent companies are now falling into larger conglomerates. As much as we love their creativity and innovation, the gaming market is just so difficult to navigate now that resources have to be picked up that just can't be attained internally anymore.

If John Carmack is happy about it, we have nothing to worry about. Zenimax is normally a pretty quiet company, and I think we can trust them to leave id and bethesda to do their thing. If nothing else, hopefully the two studios will learn a bit from each other.

no overlap? and they just mentioned the doom and wolfenstein rpgs...( not to mention bethesda did some fps in the past: ( if I remember well terminator skynet was the first full 3d fps ever - yes it even came out befofe quake - and they even are the ones who invented mouselook ) ( no wonder JC holds them the in highest regard ) I wouldn't be shocked if id announced an elder scrolls game on mobile... especially knowing Beth's attempts in the past....which were exactly critically acclaimed

I'd like to see a journalist points out that even though they are rpgs they are meant to be played like fps !! it's one of the ambitions of fallout3 that doesn't quite work well.
where I see no overlap: beth makes complicated games with large open worlds and lot of content, albeit always very buggy or at least not as playable as the id games which are balanced and playtest with great attention and precision.. the id games involve dark and narrow corridors there is less content and every think is cooked to perfection. (you don't fall through the floor while fighting skeletons :p) ( don't laugh it happened to me the other day in a crypt in WOW thought they were paying homage to the king of Worms in Daggerfall ;)))))

well the new id engine allows for very nice landscapes. It kills my fantasy that the next elderscroll game would use the next cryengine ( their editor works a bit like the elder scrolls editor and their graphics are more advanced ) but I expect the next elder scroll game to use the id tech 5 engine ( after all it already belongs to zenimax now ) meaning beautiful landscapes and models without repeated tiled textures. But I think Beth would still need to have trees in their games and cry is better than speedtree so far... a fallout4 using the rage engine would also kick ass... driveable cars etc..
